O you who believe! Many of the rabbis and priests consume people's wealth illicitly, and hinder from God's path. Those who hoard gold and silver, and do not spend them in God's cause, inform them of a painful punishment.
What does the Qur'an say about spending versus hoarding?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 9:34–35 O ye who believe, many of the rabbis and the monks devour the wealth of mankind wantonly and debar men from the way of God. THEY WHO HOARD UP GOLD AND SILVER AND SPEND IT NOT IN THE WAY OF GOD, unto them give tidings of a painful doom, on the day when it will be heated in the fire of hell and their foreheads and their flanks and their backs will be branded therewith: HERE IS THAT WHICH YE HOARDED FOR YOURSELVES. NOW TASTE OF WHAT YE USED TO HOARD. In as ONE PASSAGE because the sanction and its terrible image are inseparable from the offence, and because the offence is defined as hoarding AND NOT SPENDING - the two conditions together.
- 02 47:38 Ye are those who are called to spend in the way of God, YET AMONG YOU THERE ARE SOME WHO HOARD. And as for him who hoardeth, HE HOARDETH ONLY FROM HIS OWN SOUL. God is the Rich, and ye are the poor. In because it says who the loss falls on, and because the closing inversion - God rich, you poor - is the argument. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about moderation in spending?, with a different reason there.
- 03 104:1–3 Woe unto every slandering traducer, WHO HATH GATHERED WEALTH AND ARRANGED IT. HE THINKETH THAT HIS WEALTH WILL RENDER HIM IMMORTAL. In because it names the motive - a bid for permanence - which none of the other verses do. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about wealth that won't help on the Last Day?, with a different reason there.
- 04 3:180 AND LET NOT THOSE WHO HOARD UP THAT WHICH GOD HATH BESTOWED UPON THEM OF HIS BOUNTY THINK THAT IT IS BETTER FOR THEM. Nay, it is worse for them. That which they hoard will be their collar on the Day of Resurrection. In because it addresses the hoarder's own calculation and answers it, and because the image is a collar rather than a fire.
- 05 57:24 Who hoard and who enjoin upon the people avarice. In because it names the social form. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about greed and the love of wealth?, with a different reason there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Five passages, and 9:34 defines the offence with unusual precision.
It is not having gold and silver. It is THOSE WHO HOARD UP GOLD AND SILVER AND SPEND IT NOT IN THE WAY OF GOD. Two conditions, joined. The verse does not condemn the holding; it condemns the holding coupled with the not-spending.
What follows is among the most physical images in the Qur'an: the metal heated in the fire of hell and pressed to foreheads, flanks and backs, with the words HERE IS THAT WHICH YE HOARDED FOR YOURSELVES. NOW TASTE OF WHAT YE USED TO HOARD. The thing accumulated becomes the instrument.
3:180 works on the hoarder's own reasoning. LET THEM NOT THINK IT IS BETTER FOR THEM. NAY, IT IS WORSE. And the image there is a COLLAR - what was gathered becomes what is worn around the neck.
104:2-3 supplies the motive, and it is the sharpest psychological observation in the set: he gathered wealth and counted it, and HE THINKS HIS WEALTH WILL MAKE HIM IMMORTAL. Hoarding is diagnosed as a bid against death.
47:38 answers it: whoever hoards HOARDS ONLY FROM HIS OWN SOUL - the withholding is from himself - and then, GOD IS THE RICH AND YE ARE THE POOR. The transaction the hoarder thinks he is protecting was never in his favour.
57:24 adds the social version: hoarding, and recommending avarice to others.
Read with What does the Qur'an say about wealth that won't help on the Last Day?, which carries the verses on wealth that will not help on the Day, the text's argument is consistent: accumulation is treated as a claim about permanence, and answered on that ground.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 9:34–35, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

O ye who believe! Lo! many of the (Jewish) rabbis and the (Christian) monks devour the wealth of mankind wantonly and debar (men) from the way of Allah. They who hoard up gold and silver and spend it not in the way of Allah, unto them give tidings (O Muhammad) of a painful doom
O ye who believe! verily, many of the doctors and the monks devour the wealth of men openly, and turn folk from God's way; but those who store up gold and silver and expend it not in God's way,- give them glad tidings of grievous woe
O Believers! of a truth, many of the teachers and monks do devour man's substance in vanity, and turn them from the Way of God. But to those who treasure up gold and silver and expend it not in the Way of God, announce tidings of a grievous torment
O true believers, verily many of the priests and monks devour the substance of men in vanity, and obstruct the way of God. But unto whose who treasure up gold and silver, and employ it not for the advancement of God's true religion, denounce a grievous punishment

He it is who sent His Apostle with guidance and the religion of truth, to make it prevail over every other religion, averse although idolaters may be
He it is who hath sent His Apostle with the Guidance and a religion of the truth, that He may make it victorious over every other religion, albeit they who assign partners to God be averse from it
It is He who hath sent his apostle with the direction, and true religion: That He may cause it to appear superior to every other religion; although the idolaters be averse thereto

The number of months, according to God, is twelve months-in the decree of God-since the Day He created the heavens and the earth, of which four are sacred. This is the correct religion. So do not wrong yourselves during them. And fight the polytheists collectively, as they fight you collectively, and know that God is with the righteous.
Lo! the number of the months with Allah is twelve months by Allah's ordinance in the day that He created the heavens and the earth. Four of them are sacred: that is the right religion. So wrong not yourselves in them. And wage war on all of the idolaters as they are waging war on all of you. And know that Allah is with those who keep their duty (unto Him)
Verily, the number of months with God is twelve months in God's Book, on the day when He created the heavens and the earth; of these are four that are sacred; that is the subsisting religion. Then do not wrong yourselves therein, but fight the idolaters, one and all, as they fight you one and all, and know that God is with those who fear
Twelve months is the number of months with God, according to God's book, since the day when He created the Heavens and the Earth: of these four are sacred: this is the right usage: But wrong not yourselves therein; attack those who join gods with God in all, as they attack you in all: and know that God is with those who fear Him
Moreover, the complete number of months with God, is twelve months, which were ordained in the book of God, on the day whereon He created the heavens and the earth: Of these, four are sacred. This is the right religion: Therefore deal not unjustly with your selves therein. But attack the idolaters in all the months, as they attack you in all; and know that God is with those who fear Him

Postponement is an increase in disbelief-by which those who disbelieve are led astray. They allow it one year, and forbid it another year, in order to conform to the number made sacred by God, thus permitting what God has forbidden. The evil of their deeds seems good to them. God does not guide the disbelieving people.
Postponement (of a sacred month) is only an excess of disbelief whereby those who disbelieve are misled; they allow it one year and forbid it (another) year, that they may make up the number of the months which Allah hath hallowed, so that they allow that which Allah hath forbidden. The evil of their deeds is made fairseeming unto them. Allah guideth not the disbelieving folk
Verily, putting off is but an increase in misbelief to lead astray therewith those who misbelieve. They make it lawful one year, but they make it unlawful another year, that they may come to an understanding as to the number which God has made sacred, and make lawful what God has prohibited. Seemly to them are their evil works, but God guides not a misbelieving people
To carry over a sacred month to another, is only a growth of infidelity. The Infidels are led into error by it. They allow it one year, and forbid it another, that they may make good the number of months which God hath hallowed, and they allow that which God hath prohibited. The evil of their deeds hath been prepared for them by Satan: for God guideth not the people who do not believe
Verily the transferring of a sacred month to another month, is an additional infidelity. The unbelievers are led into an error thereby: They allow a month to be violated one year, and declare it sacred another year, that they may agree in the number of months which God hath commanded to be kept sacred; and they allow that which God hath forbidden. The evil of their actions hath been prepared for them: For God directeth not the unbelieving people

Here you are, being called to spend in the cause of God. Among you are those who withhold; but whoever withholds is withholding against his own soul. God is the Rich, while you are the needy. And if you turn away, He will replace you with another people, and they will not be like you.

The translators word this verse differently
That you may not sorrow over what eludes you, nor exult over what He has given you. God does not love the proud snob.
That ye grieve not for the sake of that which hath escaped you, nor yet exult because of that which hath been given. Allah loveth not all prideful boasters
That ye may not vex yourselves for what ye miss, nor be overjoyed at what He gives you; for God loves no arrogant boaster
Lest ye distress yourselves if good things escape you, and be over joyous for what falleth to your share. God loveth not the presumptuous, the boaster
And this is written lest ye immoderately grieve for the good which escapeth you, or rejoice for that which happeneth unto you; for God loveth no proud or vain-glorious person

We sent Our messengers with the clear proofs, and We sent down with them the Book and the Balance, that humanity may uphold justice. And We sent down iron, in which is violent force, and benefits for humanity. That God may know who supports Him and His messengers invisibly. God is Strong and Powerful.
We verily sent Our messengers with clear proofs, and revealed with them the Scripture and the Balance, that mankind may observe right measure; and He revealed iron, wherein is mighty power and (many) uses for mankind, and that Allah may know him who helpeth Him and His messengers, though unseen. Lo! Allah is Strong, Almighty
We did send our apostles with manifest signs; and we did send down among you the Book and the balance, that men might stand by justice; and we sent down iron in which is both keen violence and advantages to men; and that God might know who helps Him and His apostles in secret; verily, God is strong and mighty
We have sent our apostles with the clear tokens, and we have caused the Book and the balance to descend with them, that men might observe fairness. And we have sent down IRON. Dire evil resideth in it, as well as advantage, to mankind! God would know who will assist Him and his apostle in secret. Verily, God is Powerful, Strong
We formerly sent our apostles with evident miracles and arguments; and We sent down with them the scriptures, and the balance, that men might observe justice: And We sent them down iron, wherein is mighty strength for war, and various advantages unto mankind: That God may know who assisteth him and his apostles in secret; for God is strong and mighty

We sent Noah and Abraham, and established in their line Prophethood and the Scripture. Some of them are guided, but many of them are sinners.
And We verily sent Noah and Abraham and placed the prophethood and the scripture among their seed, and among them there is he who goeth right, but many of them are evil-livers
And we sent Noah and Abraham; and placed in their seed prophecy and the Book; and some of them are guided, though many of them are workers of abomination
And of old sent we Noah and Abraham, and on their seed conferred the gift of prophecy, and the Book; and some of them we guided aright; but many were evil doers
We formerly sent Noah and Abraham, and We established in their posterity the gift of prophecy, and the scripture: And of them some were directed, but many of them were evil doers

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 9:34-35, 47:38, 104:1-3, 3:180, 57:24, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - hoard + gold + silver; hoardeth + only + from + his + soul; heat + in + fire + of + hell + brand; withhold + that + which + god + hath + bestowed. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
