When the sky breaks apart.
What does Surah al-Infitaar say?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 82:1 When the heaven is cleft asunder. This is here because it opens the surah on what happens to the sky: "When the heaven shall be cloven in sunder" in Sale, "WHEN the Heaven shall CLEAVE asunder" in Rodwell and "When the sky breaks apart" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about the Day of Judgment?, with a different reason there.
- 02 82:2 When the planets are dispersed. This is here because the renderings do not agree on what is scattered: "when the stars shall be scattered" in Sale, "And when the stars shall disperse" in Rodwell and "And when the stars are scattered" in Palmer, against "When the planets are dispersed" in Pickthall and "When the planets are scattered" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about the Day of Judgment?, with a different reason there.
- 03 82:3 When the seas are poured forth. This is here because it is the third of the opening events and the renderings describe it differently: "when the seas shall be suffered to join their waters" in Sale, "And when the seas shall be commingled" in Rodwell, "And when the seas gush together" in Palmer, "When the seas are poured forth" in Pickthall and "When the oceans are exploded" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about the Day of Judgment?, with a different reason there.
- 04 82:4 And the sepulchres are overturned. This is here because it is the last of the opening events and brings the dead into it: "when the graves shall be turned upside down" in Sale, "And when the tombs are turned upside down" in Palmer, "And the sepulchres are overturned" in Pickthall and "When the tombs are strewn around" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about the Day of Judgment?, with a different reason there.
- 05 82:5 A soul will know what it hath sent before (it) and what left behind. This is here because it is what all of that leads to, and the renderings read the pairing differently: "Every soul shall know what it hath committed, and what it hath omitted" in Sale, "Each soul shall recognise its earliest and its latest actions" in Rodwell and "The soul shall know what it has sent on or kept back" in Palmer. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about the Day of Judgment?, with a different reason there.
- 06 82:6 O man! What hath made thee careless concerning thy Lord, the Bountiful. This is here because it turns from events to the reader, and what the question accuses differs: "O man, what hath seduced thee against thy gracious Lord" in Sale and "what has seduced thee concerning thy generous Lord" in Palmer, against "What hath made thee careless concerning thy Lord, the Bountiful" in Pickthall.
- 07 82:7 Who created thee, then fashioned, then proportioned thee. This is here because it answers the question with how the reader was made, at different lengths: "who hath created thee, and put thee together" in Sale, "Who hath created thee and moulded thee and shaped thee aright" in Rodwell and "who created thee, and fashioned thee, and gave thee symmetry" in Palmer.
- 08 82:8 Into whatsoever form He will, He casteth thee. This is here because it says the form was chosen: "In what form He pleased hath He fashioned thee" in Sale, "In the form which pleased Him hath He fashioned thee" in Rodwell, "Into whatsoever form He will, He casteth thee" in Pickthall and "In whatever shape He willed, He assembled you" in Itani.
- 09 82:9 Nay, but ye deny the Judgment. This is here because Itani names a different thing as denied: "But ye deny the last judgment as a falsehood" in Sale, "but ye treat the Judgment as a lie" in Rodwell, "Nay, but ye call the judgment a lie" in Palmer and "Nay, but ye deny the Judgment" in Pickthall, against "But you reject the religion" in Itani.
- 10 82:10 Lo! there are above you guardians. This is here because Sale alone says what the watchers are: "Verily there are appointed over you guardian angels" in Sale, against "Yet truly there are guardians over you" in Rodwell, "but over you are guardians set" in Palmer and "Though over you are watchers" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about the two angels who record every deed?, with a different reason there.
- 11 82:11 Generous and recording. This is here because it says what they are like and what they do, and Sale alone says before whom: "honourable in the sight of God, writing down your actions" in Sale, against "Illustrious recorders" in Rodwell, "noble, writing down" in Palmer, "Generous and recording" in Pickthall and "Honest recorders" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about the two angels who record every deed?, with a different reason there.
- 12 82:12 Who know (all) that ye do. This is here because it states the extent of what they know: "who know that which ye do" in Sale, "Cognisant of your actions" in Rodwell, "they know what ye do" in Palmer and "Who know (all) that ye do" in Pickthall, with his own brackets. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about the two angels who record every deed?, with a different reason there.
- 13 82:13 Lo! the righteous verily will be in delight. This is here because it is the first of the two outcomes: "The just shall surely be in a place of delight" in Sale, "Surely amid delights shall the righteous dwell" in Rodwell, "Verily, the righteous are in pleasure" in Palmer and "The virtuous will be in bliss" in Itani.
- 14 82:14 And lo! the wicked verily will be in hell. This is here because it is the second outcome, set directly against the first: "But the wicked shall surely be in hell" in Sale, "But verily the impure in Hell-fire" in Rodwell, "and, verily, the wicked are in hell" in Palmer and "While the wicked will be in Hell" in Itani.
- 15 82:15 They will burn therein on the Day of Judgment. This is here because it names when the second outcome takes effect: "they shall be cast therein to be burned, on the day of judgment" in Sale, "They shall be burned at it on the day of doom" in Rodwell, "they shall broil therein upon the judgment day" in Palmer and "They will enter it on the Day of Justice" in Itani.
- 16 82:16 And will not be absent thence. This is here because Rodwell alone reads it as hiding rather than absence: "they shall not be absent therefrom for ever" in Sale, "nor shall they be absent therefrom" in Palmer and "And will not be absent thence" in Pickthall, against "And they shall not be able to hide themselves from it" in Rodwell.
- 17 82:17 Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Day of Judgment is. This is here because the surah stops to ask what the day is rather than describe it: "What shall cause thee to understand what the day of judgment is" in Sale, "Who shall teach thee what the day of doom is" in Rodwell, "And what shall make thee know what is the judgment day" in Palmer and "Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Day of Judgment is" in Pickthall.
- 18 82:18 Again, what will convey unto thee what the Day of Judgment is. This is here because the same question is asked a second time before any answer is given: "Again, what shall cause thee to understand what the day of judgment is" in Sale, "Again, what shall make thee know what is the judgment day" in Palmer and "Again, what will convey unto thee what the Day of Judgment is" in Pickthall.
- 19 82:19 A day on which no soul hath power at all for any (other) soul. The (absolute) command on that day is Allah's. This is here because it is the answer and the close of the surah, in two parts: "It is a day whereon one soul shall not be able to obtain any thing in behalf of another soul" in Sale, "a day when no soul shall control aught for another" in Palmer and "A day on which no soul hath power at all for any (other) soul" in Pickthall; then "And the command, on that day, shall be God's" in Sale and "The (absolute) command on that day is Allah's" in Pickthall, with his own brackets.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Surah al-Infitaar is nineteen verses long. It opens with four things happening to the sky, the stars, the seas and the graves, states what the soul will then know, asks the reader a question, names who is writing, and closes on a day when no one can act for anyone else.
The opening runs at 82:1-4. The sky is "When the heaven shall be cloven in sunder" in Sale, "WHEN the Heaven shall CLEAVE asunder" in Rodwell and "When the sky breaks apart" in Itani. At 82:2 the four public-domain renderings differ from each other over what is scattered: "when the stars shall be scattered" in Sale, "And when the stars shall disperse" in Rodwell and "And when the stars are scattered" in Palmer, against "When the planets are dispersed" in Pickthall and "When the planets are scattered" in Itani. The seas at 82:3 are "when the seas shall be suffered to join their waters" in Sale, "And when the seas shall be commingled" in Rodwell, "And when the seas gush together" in Palmer, "When the seas are poured forth" in Pickthall and "When the oceans are exploded" in Itani.
82:5 states the result as done and left undone in Sale - "Every soul shall know what it hath committed, and what it hath omitted" - as a matter of time in Rodwell's "Each soul shall recognise its earliest and its latest actions", and as sent ahead or held back in Palmer's "The soul shall know what it has sent on or kept back". The study What does the Qur'an say about the Day of Judgment? carries 82:1-5 with its own reason.
82:6-8 put a question to the reader and then describe the making of the one questioned, and what the question turns on differs: "O man, what hath seduced thee against thy gracious Lord" in Sale and "what has seduced thee concerning thy generous Lord" in Palmer, against "What hath made thee careless concerning thy Lord, the Bountiful" in Pickthall. At 82:7 Sale is briefest with "who hath created thee, and put thee together", where Rodwell has "Who hath created thee and moulded thee and shaped thee aright" and Palmer "who created thee, and fashioned thee, and gave thee symmetry".
82:9 is where the renderings part company most sharply. Sale has "But ye deny the last judgment as a falsehood", Rodwell "but ye treat the Judgment as a lie", Palmer "Nay, but ye call the judgment a lie" and Pickthall "Nay, but ye deny the Judgment" - while Itani has "But you reject the religion", which is a different thing being denied.
82:10-12 name who is watching, and Sale alone says what they are: "Verily there are appointed over you guardian angels" in Sale, against "Yet truly there are guardians over you" in Rodwell, "but over you are guardians set" in Palmer and "Though over you are watchers" in Itani. What they are like is "honourable in the sight of God, writing down your actions" in Sale, "Illustrious recorders" in Rodwell, "noble, writing down" in Palmer, "Generous and recording" in Pickthall and "Honest recorders" in Itani. The study What does the Qur'an say about the two angels who record every deed? carries 82:10-12 with its own reason.
82:13-16 set two outcomes against each other, "The just shall surely be in a place of delight" in Sale and "But the wicked shall surely be in hell", and state that the second is not left: "they shall not be absent therefrom for ever" in Sale, where Rodwell reads it as hiding in "And they shall not be able to hide themselves from it".
The surah then asks the same question twice over, at 82:17 and 82:18, and answers it at 82:19: "It is a day whereon one soul shall not be able to obtain any thing in behalf of another soul" in Sale, "a day when no soul shall control aught for another" in Palmer, and then "And the command, on that day, shall be God's" in Sale and "The (absolute) command on that day is Allah's" in Pickthall, with his own brackets.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not say what the watchers over a person are, beyond the wording each rendering gives them, and it does not settle which of judgment and religion the surah says is being denied. Resolving either needs a commentary or a lexicon read against the Arabic: this study holds no in an edition whose usage rights can be verified - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. It holds no , occasion of revelation or biography either. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 82:1, widening across 19 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

19 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across five translations - the four public-domain renderings of Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880 and Pickthall 1930, and Itani 2012 - of 82:1-19, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.
How this set was arrived at. This is a study of one surah, so it carries every verse of it: all nineteen verses of Surah al-Infitaar, each as its own passage with its own reason. No verse of the surah is left out, so none is recorded as not carried.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.

A dashed outline marks a tag the editors handle with extra care. It describes how this study is filed and shown, not what the verses say.
