What does the Qur'an say about the Day of Judgment?

Key findingsEditorial

One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.

  1. 01 1:4 Names the Day and God's mastery of it - the frame the day's description sits in; the verse recited in every prayer.
  2. 02 18:49 The record is placed and leaves nothing out - the guilty ask what kind of book it is that leaves neither small nor great uncounted. In because it states the completeness of the reckoning rather than its outcome.
  3. 03 21:47 Just balances are set, and nothing is wronged: though it be the weight of a grain of mustard seed, We bring it. In because it names the measure and the guarantee in one sentence. The five do not agree on the instrument: balances in Palmer, Sale and Rodwell, a balance in Pickthall, scales in Itani.
  4. 04 39:68 The trumpet is blown and all in the heavens and the earth swoon away, save whom God wills - then it is blown again and they stand looking. In because it is the frame's one statement of how the day begins.
  5. 05 75:1–6 An oath by the Day of Resurrection and by the self-accusing soul, then the question: does man think We shall not assemble his bones? - answered down to the fingertips. In because it meets a denial with a specific, physical claim.
  6. 06 82:1–5 The heaven cleft, the stars scattered, the seas poured forth, the graves overturned - and then, a soul will know what it sent before and what it left behind. In because the cosmic signs end on a single soul's knowledge. 82:5 is the furthest-apart verse in the frame on the four-rendering measure this study was signed over, at 0.78, and the second furthest on the five-rendering measure at 0.75, behind 101:10.
  7. 07 99:6–8 People come forth in scattered groups to be shown their deeds, and whoever does an atom's weight of good or ill will see it. In because it is the frame's plainest statement that the reckoning is by sight rather than by report. Sale alone weighs it as an ant rather than an atom.
  8. 08 101:6–11 The scales heavy and the scales light, and what follows each. In because it is the frame's one statement of outcome, and because 101:9 carries the sharpest single divergence in the frame: the pit in Palmer, Sale and Rodwell, his mother in Pickthall, the Abyss in Itani. The claim that this passage is where the renderings part company most sharply overall was withdrawn on 2026-09-08 - the frame's furthest verse is 82:5 on the four-rendering measure and 101:10 on the five-rendering measure, and 101:9 itself scores below the corpus median because three of the four renderings it was signed over are near-identical there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation

Written by the editors. Not a translation, and not a source. It is an editorial restatement of the verses in this study and carries their name because someone has to answer for it.

Read together, this frame describes a sequence, a measure, and a record - and it opens with the day named before anything about it is said.

1:4 gives only that: Master of the Day of Judgment, four words in the opening sura, recited in every prayer. It describes nothing; it states a relation, and everything below sits inside it.

It begins with the trumpet: all in the heavens and the earth swoon away, save whom God wills - and then it is blown a second time, and they stand, looking (39:68). 82:1-5 gives the same beginning as signs - the heaven cleft, the stars scattered, the seas poured forth, the graves overturned - and then narrows, in one line, to a soul will know what it sent before and what it left behind.

The measure is stated twice and both times the unit is deliberately tiny. Just balances are set, and though it be the weight of a grain of mustard seed, We bring it (21:47) - balances in Palmer, Sale and Rodwell, a balance in Pickthall, scales in Itani. And in 99:6-8, people come forth in scattered groups to be shown their deeds - whoever does an atom's weight of good or of ill will see it. The reckoning is by sight, not by report. 18:49 says the record leaves neither small nor great uncounted.

75:1-6 answers a denial rather than describing a scene: does man think We shall not assemble his bones? - We are able to restore his very fingertips.

101:6-11 gives the outcome, and the sharpest single divergence in this frame falls at 101:9. Palmer, Sale and Rodwell have his dwelling shall be the pit, Pickthall has a bereft and Hungry One will be his mother, and Itani has his home is the Abyss - one clause read as a place by four of the five and as a person by one, and the fifth reading is a place again under a word nobody else uses. The study shows all of them and chooses none.

Two things the version of this study signed on 2026-09-05 said about that passage are withdrawn. It said 101:6-11 is where the four translators part company hardest in this frame, and cited 0.73 and 0.70 as showing these to be among the most divergent verses in the corpus. On the measure it was signed over, the frame's furthest verse is 82:5 at 0.78 - which this study's own basis already named - and the figures quoted do not measure 101:9, the clause the sentence describes: 101:9 scored 0.54 and stood 4,353rd of the 6,227 verses scored, in the closer half of the corpus. The score is a mean over every pair of renderings, and at 101:9 Palmer and Sale are word for word identical and Rodwell nearly so, which averages away the one that parts company. What is true, and is what the sentence was reaching for, is that Sale and Pickthall stand further apart at 101:9 than all but 866 of the 37,389 pair distances measured over four. The basis below sets the measurement out in full.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

Scope of this study

This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.

What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.

What this rests on

Opens with 1:4, widening across 8 passages in all.

Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

The versesSource fact 8 passages, each with every cleared translation

8 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.

Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Edward Henry Palmer published 1880

We will place just balances upon the resurrection day, and no soul shall be wronged at all, even though it be the weight of a grain of mustard seed, we will bring it; for we are good enough at reckoning up

John Medows Rodwell published 1861

Just balances will we set up for the day of the resurrection, neither shall any soul be wronged in aught; though, were a work but the weight of a grain of mustard seed, we would bring it forth to be weighed: and our reckoning will suffice

George Sale published 1734

We will appoint just balances for the day of resurrection; neither shall any soul be injured at all: Although the merit or guilt of an action be of the weight of a grain of mustard-seed only, We will produce it publicly; and there will be sufficient accountants with Us

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

101:6–11 — the verse above

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.

Read across all five cleared translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930, Itani 2012 - of 1:4, 18:49, 21:47, 39:68, 75:1-6, 82:1-5, 99:6-8, 101:6-11, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.

RE-DERIVED OVER FIVE ON 2026-09-08, superseding the version signed 2026-09-05 over four. Itani 2012 cleared on 2026-09-07, after that signing, and this study has now been read against him at every anchor. He enters as a fifth voice and is not promoted to the reading that settles what 101:9 says. What changed: at 101:9 Itani writes his home is the Abyss where Palmer, Sale and Rodwell write the pit and Pickthall writes his mother, so the clause now carries a place-reading, a person-reading, and a third word for the place; at 21:47 he writes scales where Palmer, Sale and Rodwell write balances and Pickthall writes a balance. AND TWO FIGURES THIS STUDY PUBLISHED ARE WITHDRAWN. Its synthesis called 101:6-11 the place where the four translators part company hardest in this frame, and its anchor reason at 101:6 said the same. Measured on 2026-09-08 on the four-rendering measure it was signed over - recomputed by dropping the Itani pairs from the stored verse_divergence_pairs distances and re-averaging, which is the deriver's own method - the frame's furthest verse is 82:5 at 0.7783, ahead of 101:10 at 0.7293; and taken as passages rather than verses, 101:6-11 averages 0.6327 against 0.6616 for 99:6-8. The claim is false on both readings, and this study's own basis already contradicted it by naming 82:5 as where the four stand furthest apart. Its second figure, 0.73 and 0.70 offered as showing these to be among the most divergent verses in the corpus, does not measure the clause the sentence had just described: 0.73 is 101:10, which stood 520th of 6,227 over four; 0.70 is 101:6 at 812th or 101:7 at 797th, and the sentence does not say which; and 101:9, the clause about the pit and the mother, scored 0.5429 and stood 4,353rd, below the corpus median. THE CLAIMS WERE ALREADY UNTRUE ON THE DAY THEY WERE SIGNED, and Itani did not cause them. What they mistook is the instrument: the verse score is a mean over every pair of renderings, and at 101:9 the Palmer-Sale distance is 0.000000 and the Palmer-Rodwell and Rodwell-Sale distances are 0.333333, so three near-identical renderings pull the mean down while the pair the sentence is about, Sale against Pickthall, stands at 0.866667 - wider than all but 866 of the 37,389 pair distances measured over four. Over five the picture moves again: 101:10 rises to 0.7594 and becomes the frame's furthest verse, ahead of 82:5 at 0.7480; 101:9 rises to 0.6617; and the widest pair at 101:9 is no longer Sale against Pickthall but Itani against Pickthall, at 0.923077. What did not change: the verse set, the finding that this frame describes a sequence, a measure and a record, and the reasons per verse other than the four noted below.

How this set was arrived at. The verse set is the Editor's anchor frame, not a search result, and it is unchanged by this re-check over five translations. A fresh probe was run and recorded below; its results were read and nothing was taken from them.

PROBE VOCABULARY OF THIS RE-DERIVATION, RECORDED SO IT CAN BE RE-RUN. The version signed when four translations were cleared recorded no probe, because the frame was not a search result; this re-check over five translations records one anyway, so that the words the study's findings turn on can be re-measured. Run 2026-09-08 over all five cleared renderings, conjunctive, mushaf order: ["pit"] - 9 verses, reaching two anchors; ["mother"] - 34, reaching one; ["abyss"] - 6, reaching one; ["hawiya"] - 1, reaching one; ["scales"] - 9, ["balance"] - 14 and ["balances"] - 7, each reaching three; ["trumpet"] - 19, reaching one; ["atom"] - 6, reaching two; ["mustard"] - 2, reaching one. Union 89 verses, of which 81 are not anchors of this study, and SIXTEEN OF THE TWENTY-FOUR ANCHOR VERSES ARE REACHED BY NO PROBE IN THIS LIST - which is what an anchor frame looks like when it is probed, and is recorded rather than repaired. THE UNION IS NOT A CANDIDATE SET FOR THIS STUDY and no verse was taken from it. Four results are recorded because they bear on the findings. At 101:9 "pit" reaches Palmer, Sale and Rodwell, "mother" reaches Pickthall alone, and "abyss" reaches Itani alone: three readings of one clause, measured. "hawiya" returns exactly one verse in the whole corpus, 101:10, and in Rodwell alone, who is the only one of the five to carry the Arabic name of the place into English. At 21:47 the instrument of the reckoning is "balances" in Palmer, Sale and Rodwell, "balance" in Pickthall and "scales" in Itani, and at 101:6 and 101:8 it is "balance" in Palmer and Sale, "balances" in Rodwell and "scales" in Pickthall and Itani - so no translator uses one word for it across the frame. And "atom" reaches 99:7 and 99:8 in Palmer, Rodwell, Pickthall and Itani but not in Sale, who writes the weight of an ant.

Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. Across this set the derived divergence measure, recomputed over five renderings on 2026-09-07, runs from band 1 at 75:1 (0.32), where the five stand closest, to band 5 at 101:10 (0.76), where they stand furthest apart. The version signed when four translations were cleared named 75:1 at 0.38 as the closest and 82:5 at 0.78 as the furthest. The closest verse is the same one; the furthest changes, because 101:10 rose from 0.73 to 0.76 while 82:5 fell from 0.78 to 0.75, and both sit in band 5 on both measures. A verse score here is a mean over every pair of renderings and is not a measure of the widest pair, which is the distinction the withdrawn claims above turned on. The study names the differences it turns on and does not choose between them.
