What does the Qur'an say about the record given in the right or the left hand?

Key findingsEditorial

One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.

  1. 01 69:19–21 Then as for him who is given his record in his RIGHT HAND, he will say: take, read my book - I knew that I should have to meet my reckoning. Then he will be in blissful state. In as ONE PASSAGE because the offer to have it read aloud is the whole character of the scene and is lost if 69:19 stands alone.
  2. 02 69:25–26 But as for him who is given his record in his LEFT HAND, he will say: oh, would that I had not been given my book, and knew not what my reckoning was. In as ONE PASSAGE because the wish not to know is the exact inverse of 69:19's take-and-read.
  3. 03 84:7–12 Then whoso is given his account in his right hand, he truly will receive an easy reckoning and will return to his folk in joy. But whoso is given his account BEHIND HIS BACK, he surely will invoke destruction and be thrown to scorching fire. In as ONE PASSAGE because it supplies a THIRD position - behind the back - which the left-hand verses do not, and because it is the only place the consequence for each is spelled out immediately.
  4. 04 17:14 Read thy book. THY SOUL SUFFICETH AS RECKONER AGAINST THEE THIS DAY. In because it is the sharpest statement in the set: the reader of the record is the person themselves, and no other accuser is required.
  5. 05 17:71 On the day when We shall summon all men with their record, whoso is given his book in his right hand - such will read their book and they will not be wronged a shred. In because it states that the whole of humanity is summoned WITH the record, which makes it universal rather than a scene about two men.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation

Written by the editors. Not a translation, and not a source. It is an editorial restatement of the verses in this study and carries their name because someone has to answer for it.

Five passages, and they are more theatrical than doctrinal.

The scene is always the same: a person is HANDED something, and everything follows from which hand. 69:19 - the right hand, and the man's first reaction is to want an audience: TAKE, READ MY BOOK. 69:25 - the left hand, and the first reaction is the opposite: would that I had never been given it, and never known my reckoning.

84:10 adds a detail the others do not, and it is easy to miss: the second man's account is given BEHIND HIS BACK. Not the left hand - behind. The four translators all keep it. Whatever it means, the text has more than two positions.

17:14 is the verse that changes the character of the whole thing. Read thy book: THY SOUL SUFFICETH AS RECKONER AGAINST THEE THIS DAY. There is no prosecution in that sentence. The record is handed over and the person is told to read it and that no further accuser is needed.

17:71 makes it universal - all men summoned with their record - so this is not a scene reserved for a few.

Ten verses were dropped, and the pattern in them is worth stating because it would trap any looser search: the word the translators render BOOK is used far more often in the Qur'an for revealed SCRIPTURE than for a record of deeds. Nine of the ten drops are that other sense. The universal register in which everything is written - a different idea again - is carried by What does the Qur'an say about the Preserved Tablet?, and 10:61 is dropped here and belongs there.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

Scope of this study

This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.

What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.

What this rests on

Opens with 69:19–21, widening across 5 passages in all.

Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

The versesSource fact 5 passages, each with every cleared translation

5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.

Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

Talal Itani2012 Whoever is guided-is guided for his own good. And whoever goes astray-goes astray to his detriment. No burdened soul carries the burdens of another, nor do We ever punish until We have sent a messenger.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 Whosoever goeth right, it is only for (the good of) his own soul that he goeth right, and whosoever erreth, erreth only to its hurt. No laden soul can bear another's load, We never punish until we have sent a messenger

Edward Henry Palmer1880 He who accepts guidance, accepts it only for his own soul: and he who errs, errs only against it; nor shall one burdened soul bear the burden of another. Nor would we punish until we had sent an apostle

John Medows Rodwell1861 For his own good only shall the guided yield to guidance, and to his own loss only shall the erring err; and the heavy laden shall not be laden with another's load. We never punished until we had first sent an apostle

George Sale1734 He who shall be rightly directed, shall be directed to the advantage only of his own soul; and he who shall err, shall err only against the same: Neither shall any laden soul be charged with the burden of another. We did not punish any people, until we had first sent an apostle to warn them

Talal Itani2012 When We decide to destroy a town, We command its affluent ones, they transgress in it, so the word becomes justified against it, and We destroy it completely.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 And when We would destroy a township We send commandment to its folk who live at ease, and afterward they commit abomination therein, and so the Word (of doom) hath effect for it, and we annihilate it with complete annihilation

Edward Henry Palmer1880 And when we desired to destroy a city we bade the opulent ones thereof; and they wrought abomination therein; and its due sentence was pronounced; and we destroyed it with utter destruction

John Medows Rodwell1861 And when we willed to destroy a city, to its affluent ones did we address our bidding; but when they acted criminally therein, just was its doom, and we destroyed it with an utter destruction

George Sale1734 And when We resolved to destroy a city, We commanded the inhabitants thereof, who lived in affluence, to obey our apostle; but they acted corruptly herein: Wherefore the sentence was justly pronounced against that city; and We destroyed it with an utter destruction

Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 69:19-21, 69:25-26, 84:7-12, 17:14, 17:71, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.

How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - book + right + hand; record + right + hand; book + left + hand; given + behind + back; read + thy + book. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.

What was returned and not carried. 10 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 2:129 - 'the Book' as revelation, not as a record of deeds; 2:282 - a written contract; carried by the study Does the Qur'an say a woman is worth half a man?; 3:20 - 'the Book' as revelation; 6:94 - the solitary arrival, not the record; 9:29 - 'the Book' as revelation; 10:61 - the universal register, which is carried by What does the Qur'an say about the Preserved Tablet? - a different thing from the individual's book; 10:94 - 'the Book' as revelation; 17:93 - a demand for a miracle; 18:27 - revelation; 29:48 - revelation, and the Prophet's literacy.

Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.

tafsir

Commentary on the Qur'an: the works in which scholars interpret and explain its verses.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. The platform's scope statement names it as "interpretation (tafsir)".

hadith

A report that claims to preserve something the Prophet Muhammad said or did.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. It follows the platform's standing distinction: the sunnah is the practice, and a hadith is a report claiming to preserve it.

asbab al-nuzul

Accounts of the circumstances in which particular verses of the Qur'an are reported to have been revealed ("occasion of revelation").

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. "Occasion of revelation", in the singular, is the wording the platform's studies use when they say what they rest on.

al-Tabari

A scholar who wrote Jami' al-bayan, a commentary on the Qur'an in Arabic; he died in 923 CE.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The work is as recorded in the platform's rights audit; the date of death is from the Library of Congress name authority file.

Ibn Kathir

A scholar who wrote Tafsir al-Qur'an al-'Azim, a commentary on the Qur'an in Arabic; he died in 1373 CE.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The work is as recorded in the platform's rights audit; the date of death is from the Library of Congress name authority file.
