By the night as it covers.
What does Surah al-Lail say?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 92:1 By the night enshrouding. This is here because it opens the surah, and what the night does differs across the renderings: "By the night, when it covereth all things with darkness" in Sale, "BY the NIGHT when she spreads her veil" in Rodwell, "By the night when it veils" in Palmer and "By the night enshrouding" in Pickthall.
- 02 92:2 And the day resplendent. This is here because it sets the day against the night in the second oath: "by the day, when it shineth forth" in Sale, "By the Day when it brightly shineth" in Rodwell, "And the day when it is displayed" in Palmer and "And the day resplendent" in Pickthall.
- 03 92:3 And Him Who hath created male and female. This is here because Palmer alone reads the maker as a what rather than a who: "And by what created male and female" in Palmer, against "by Him who hath created the male, and the female" in Sale, "By Him who made male and female" in Rodwell and "And Him Who hath created male and female" in Pickthall.
- 04 92:4 Lo! your effort is dispersed (toward divers ends). This is here because it is what the oaths are sworn about: "Verily your endeavour is different" in Sale, "At different ends truly do ye aim" in Rodwell, "Verily, your efforts are diverse" in Palmer and "your effort is dispersed (toward divers ends)" in Pickthall, with his own brackets.
- 05 92:5 As for him who giveth and is dutiful (toward Allah). This is here because the renderings do not agree on what the first man does: "But as to him who giveth alms and feareth God" in Rodwell and "But as for him who gives alms and fears God" in Palmer, against "Now whoso is obedient, and feareth God" in Sale and "As for him who giveth and is dutiful (toward Allah)" in Pickthall.
- 06 92:6 And believeth in goodness. This is here because what he assents to is named at very different lengths: "and professeth the truth of that faith which is most excellent" in Sale, against "And yieldeth assent to the Good" in Rodwell, "And believes in the best" in Palmer, "And believeth in goodness" in Pickthall and "And confirms goodness" in Itani.
- 07 92:7 Surely We will ease his way unto the state of ease. This is here because it is what follows for him, read as a road in Sale and Rodwell and as ease itself in Palmer: "unto him will We facilitate the way to happiness" in Sale and "To him will we make easy the path to happiness" in Rodwell, against "We will send him easily to ease" in Palmer and "Surely We will ease his way unto the state of ease" in Pickthall.
- 08 92:8 But as for him who hoardeth and deemeth himself independent. This is here because it opens the second man in the same shape as the first, and the renderings name his fault differently: "But whoso shall be covetous, and shall be wholly taken up with this world" in Sale, "But as to him who is covetous and bent on riches" in Rodwell, "But as for him who is niggardly, And longs for wealth" in Palmer and "But as for him who hoardeth and deemeth himself independent" in Pickthall. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about wealth that won't help on the Last Day?, with a different reason there.
- 09 92:9 And disbelieveth in goodness. This is here because he denies exactly what the first man assented to: "and shall deny the truth of that which is most excellent" in Sale, "And calleth the Good a lie" in Rodwell, "And calls the good a lie" in Palmer and "And disbelieveth in goodness" in Pickthall. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about wealth that won't help on the Last Day?, with a different reason there.
- 10 92:10 Surely We will ease his way unto adversity. This is here because the same easing is said to run the other way: "unto him will We facilitate the way to misery" in Sale, "To him will we make easy the path to misery" in Rodwell, "We will send him easily to difficulty" in Palmer and "Surely We will ease his way unto adversity" in Pickthall. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about wealth that won't help on the Last Day?, with a different reason there.
- 11 92:11 His riches will not save him when he perisheth. This is here because Sale alone says where he falls to: "and his riches shall not profit him, when he shall fall headlong into hell" in Sale, against "And what shall his wealth avail him when he goeth down" in Rodwell, "His riches will not save him when he perisheth" in Pickthall and "And his money will not avail him when he plummets" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about wealth that won't help on the Last Day?, with a different reason there.
- 12 92:12 Lo! Ours it is (to give) the guidance. This is here because it states whose the guiding is, and Sale alone names who is guided: "Verily unto Us appertaineth the direction of mankind" in Sale, against "Truly man's guidance is with Us" in Rodwell, "Verily, it is for us to guide" in Palmer and "It is upon Us to guide" in Itani.
- 13 92:13 And lo! unto Us belong the latter portion and the former. This is here because it claims both lives at once: "And ours is the life to come, and the present life" in Sale, "And Our's, the Future and the Past" in Rodwell, "And, verily, ours are the hereafter and the former life" in Palmer and "unto Us belong the latter portion and the former" in Pickthall.
- 14 92:14 Therefor have I warned you of the flaming Fire. This is here because it is the warning the surah turns on, and Sale reads it as a threat: "Wherefore I threaten you with fire which burneth fiercely" in Sale, against "I warn you therefore of the flaming fire" in Rodwell, "And I have warned you of a fire that flames" in Palmer and "I have warned you of a Fierce Blaze" in Itani.
- 15 92:15 Which only the most wretched must endure. This is here because it limits who enters that fire: "which none shall enter to be burned except the most wretched" in Sale, "None shall be cast to it but the most wretched" in Rodwell, "None shall broil thereon, but the most wretched" in Palmer and "Which only the most wretched must endure" in Pickthall.
- 16 92:16 He who denieth and turneth away. This is here because it says what makes him so, and Sale names disbelief where Rodwell and Palmer name calling something a lie: "who shall have disbelieved, and turned back" in Sale, against "Who hath called the truth a lie and turned his back" in Rodwell and "who says it is a lie and turns his back" in Palmer.
- 17 92:17 Far removed from it will be the righteous. This is here because Sale alone names what is kept away from: "But he who strictly bewareth idolatry and rebellion, shall be removed far from the same" in Sale, against "But the God-fearing shall escape it" in Rodwell, "But the pious shall be kept away from it" in Palmer, "Far removed from it will be the righteous" in Pickthall and "But the devout will avoid it" in Itani.
- 18 92:18 Who giveth his wealth that he may grow (in goodness). This is here because the renderings differ over whether the giving is alms or a purifying: "who giveth his substance in alms" in Sale and "he who gives his wealth in alms" in Palmer, against "Who giveth away his substance that he may become pure" in Rodwell, "Who giveth his wealth that he may grow (in goodness)" in Pickthall and "He who gives his money to become pure" in Itani.
- 19 92:19 And none hath with him any favour for reward. This is here because it rules out a return for the giving: "and by whom no benefit is bestowed on any, that it may be recompensed" in Sale, "and who gives no favour to any one for the sake of reward" in Palmer, "And none hath with him any favour for reward" in Pickthall and "Seeking no favor in return" in Itani.
- 20 92:20 Except as seeking (to fulfil) the purpose of his Lord Most High. This is here because it names what is sought instead, and the renderings do not agree on what that is: "but who bestoweth the same for the sake of his Lord, the most High" in Sale and "but only craving the face of his Lord most High" in Palmer, against "Except as seeking (to fulfil) the purpose of his Lord Most High" in Pickthall, with his own brackets.
- 21 92:21 He verily will be content. This is here because it closes the surah, and Sale alone names what he is satisfied with: "And hereafter he shall be well satisfied with his reward" in Sale, against "in the end he shall be well pleased" in Palmer, "He verily will be content" in Pickthall and "And he will be satisfied" in Itani.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Surah al-Lail runs from 92:1 to 92:21. It opens with oaths by the night, the day and the making of male and female, states that people aim at different things, and then follows two men in parallel: one who gives and one who withholds.
The oaths run at 92:1-3. What the night does differs across the renderings - "By the night, when it covereth all things with darkness" in Sale, "BY the NIGHT when she spreads her veil" in Rodwell, "By the night when it veils" in Palmer and "By the night enshrouding" in Pickthall - and at 92:3 Palmer alone reads the maker as a what rather than a who: "And by what created male and female" in Palmer, against "by Him who hath created the male, and the female" in Sale, "By Him who made male and female" in Rodwell and "And Him Who hath created male and female" in Pickthall.
92:4 states what the oaths are sworn about: "Verily your endeavour is different" in Sale, "At different ends truly do ye aim" in Rodwell, "Verily, your efforts are diverse" in Palmer and "your effort is dispersed (toward divers ends)" in Pickthall, in his own brackets.
92:5-7 describe the first man, and the renderings do not agree on what he does: Rodwell and Palmer name alms - "But as to him who giveth alms and feareth God" in Rodwell - where Sale has obedience in "Now whoso is obedient, and feareth God" and Pickthall only giving, in "As for him who giveth and is dutiful (toward Allah)". What he assents to is "and professeth the truth of that faith which is most excellent" in Sale, against Palmer's "And believes in the best" and Pickthall's "And believeth in goodness". What follows is read as a road in Sale and Rodwell and as ease itself in Palmer: "unto him will We facilitate the way to happiness" in Sale and "To him will we make easy the path to happiness" in Rodwell, against "We will send him easily to ease" in Palmer.
92:8-11 set the second man against the first in the same shape. He is "But whoso shall be covetous, and shall be wholly taken up with this world" in Sale, "But as to him who is covetous and bent on riches" in Rodwell, "But as for him who is niggardly, And longs for wealth" in Palmer and "But as for him who hoardeth and deemeth himself independent" in Pickthall. He denies what the first assented to - "And calleth the Good a lie" in Rodwell - and the same easing runs the other way: "unto him will We facilitate the way to misery" in Sale and "We will send him easily to difficulty" in Palmer. At 92:11 Sale alone says where he falls to: "and his riches shall not profit him, when he shall fall headlong into hell", where Rodwell has only "And what shall his wealth avail him when he goeth down". The study What does the Qur'an say about wealth that won't help on the Last Day? carries 92:8-11 with its own reason.
92:12-13 state what belongs to the one speaking: "Verily unto Us appertaineth the direction of mankind" in Sale and "Truly man's guidance is with Us" in Rodwell, then "And ours is the life to come, and the present life" in Sale.
92:14-16 name the fire and who enters it. It is "Wherefore I threaten you with fire which burneth fiercely" in Sale and "I have warned you of a Fierce Blaze" in Itani, entered, in Sale, by "which none shall enter to be burned except the most wretched", and the one who enters is described as "who shall have disbelieved, and turned back" in Sale and "Who hath called the truth a lie and turned his back" in Rodwell.
92:17-21 name who is kept away from it, and Sale alone says what he keeps away from: "But he who strictly bewareth idolatry and rebellion, shall be removed far from the same" in Sale, against "But the God-fearing shall escape it" in Rodwell and "But the pious shall be kept away from it" in Palmer. What he does with his wealth is read two ways - "who giveth his substance in alms" in Sale and "he who gives his wealth in alms" in Palmer, against "Who giveth away his substance that he may become pure" in Rodwell and "Who giveth his wealth that he may grow (in goodness)" in Pickthall - and he does it for no return: "and who gives no favour to any one for the sake of reward" in Palmer. What he seeks instead is "but only craving the face of his Lord most High" in Palmer, where Pickthall has "Except as seeking (to fulfil) the purpose of his Lord Most High", in his own brackets. The surah closes on "in the end he shall be well pleased" in Palmer.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not name either of the two men the surah follows, or say whether particular people were meant: that needs an occasion of revelation or a biography, and this study holds neither in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. It does not settle whether the giving at 92:5 and 92:18 is alms in the technical sense or giving in general - the renderings themselves divide on that, and settling it needs a commentary or a lexicon read against the Arabic. This study holds no in an edition whose usage rights can be verified - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 92:1, widening across 21 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 21 passages, each with every cleared translation
21 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across five translations - the four public-domain renderings of Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880 and Pickthall 1930, and Itani 2012 - of 92:1-21, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.
How this set was arrived at. This is a study of one surah, so it carries every verse of it: all of Surah al-Lail from 92:1 to 92:21, each as its own passage with its own reason. No verse of the surah is left out, so none is recorded as not carried.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
