The Shocker.
What does Surah al-Qari'a say?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 101:1 The Calamity. This is here because it opens the surah by naming the event, and the renderings do not share the name: "The striking" in Sale, "THE BLOW" in Rodwell, "The smiting" in Palmer, "The Calamity" in Pickthall and "The Shocker" in Itani.
- 02 101:2 What is the Calamity. This is here because it turns the name into a question, each rendering repeating its own word: "What is the striking" in Sale, "what is the Blow" in Rodwell, "What is the smiting" in Palmer, "What is the Calamity" in Pickthall, and Itani "What is the Shocker?"
- 03 101:3 Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Calamity is. This is here because the question is put a second time through another voice: "Who shall teach thee" in Rodwell, "what will convey unto thee" in Pickthall and "What will explain to you" in Itani.
- 04 101:4 A day wherein mankind will be as thickly-scattered moths. This is here because it is the first of two comparisons and it is about people: "like moths scattered abroad" in Sale, "like scattered moths" in Rodwell, Palmer and Itani, and "thickly-scattered moths" in Pickthall.
- 05 101:5 And the mountains will become as carded wool. This is here because it is the second comparison and the renderings add different amounts to it: "like carded wool of various colours driven by the wind" in Sale, "like flocks of carded wool" in Rodwell and Palmer, "as carded wool" in Pickthall and "like tufted wool" in Itani.
- 06 101:6 Then, as for him whose scales are heavy (with good works). This is here because it opens the weighing, and only Sale states what makes the weight - "whose balance shall be heavy with good works" - while Pickthall supplies the same words in brackets of his own, "whose scales are heavy (with good works)". ALSO CARRIED by the studies What does the Qur'an say about the scale that weighs deeds (mizan)? and What does the Qur'an say about the Day of Judgment?, with different reasons there.
- 07 101:7 He will live a pleasant life. This is here because it is the outcome for the heavy balance, worded five ways: "shall lead a pleasing life" in Sale, "a life that shall please him well" in Rodwell, "a well-pleasing life" in Palmer, "He will live a pleasant life" in Pickthall and "in a pleasant life" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the studies What does the Qur'an say about the scale that weighs deeds (mizan)? and What does the Qur'an say about the Day of Judgment?, with different reasons there.
- 08 101:8 But as for him whose scales are light. This is here because it is the mirror of 101:6 and states only the lightness, with no counterpart to the good works Sale and Pickthall name there: "whose balance shall be light" in Sale, "whose balances are light" in Rodwell, "whose balance is light" in Palmer. ALSO CARRIED by the studies What does the Qur'an say about the scale that weighs deeds (mizan)? and What does the Qur'an say about the Day of Judgment?, with different reasons there.
- 09 101:9 A bereft and Hungry One will be his mother. This is here because the renderings part company over what the line names: "his dwelling shall be the pit of hell" in Sale and Palmer, "his dwelling-place shall be the pit" in Rodwell, "A bereft and Hungry One will be his mother" in Pickthall and "His home is the Abyss" in Itani - a place in three, a mother in one, an abyss in one. The claim that this is where they part company furthest was withdrawn on 2026-10-03: five verses of this surah stand further apart on the five-rendering measure. ALSO CARRIED by the studies What does the Qur'an say about the scale that weighs deeds (mizan)? and What does the Qur'an say about the Day of Judgment?, with different reasons there.
- 10 101:10 Ah, what will convey unto thee what she is. This is here because the question is asked a third time and what it asks about follows each rendering's choice at 101:9: "how frightful the pit of hell is" in Sale, "what the pit (El-Hawiya) is" in Rodwell, "what it is" in Palmer and "what she is" in Pickthall. ALSO CARRIED by the studies What does the Qur'an say about the scale that weighs deeds (mizan)? and What does the Qur'an say about the Day of Judgment?, with different reasons there.
- 11 101:11 Raging Fire. This is here because it closes the surah with the answer, and the renderings agree on fire while differing on the article and the heat: "It is a burning fire" in Sale, "A raging fire" in Rodwell, "a burning fire" in Palmer, "Raging Fire" in Pickthall and "A Raging Fire" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the studies What does the Qur'an say about the scale that weighs deeds (mizan)? and What does the Qur'an say about the Day of Judgment?, with different reasons there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Surah al-Qari'a is eleven verses long. It names a coming event, asks twice what it is, describes what happens to people and to the mountains on that day, and then divides those present into two by weight.
The renderings do not give the event the same name. Sale has "The striking", Rodwell "THE BLOW", Palmer "The smiting", Pickthall "The Calamity" and Itani "The Shocker". At 101:2 each repeats its own name as a question - "What is the striking" in Sale, "what is the Blow" in Rodwell, "What is the smiting" in Palmer, "What is the Calamity" in Pickthall - and at 101:3 the question is put again through a second voice: "Who shall teach thee" in Rodwell, "what will convey unto thee" in Pickthall and "What will explain to you" in Itani.
At 101:4 people are compared to moths: "like moths scattered abroad" in Sale, "like scattered moths" in Rodwell, Palmer and Itani, and "thickly-scattered moths" in Pickthall. At 101:5 the mountains are compared to wool, and here the renderings differ in how much they add: Sale has "like carded wool of various colours driven by the wind", Rodwell and Palmer "like flocks of carded wool", Pickthall "as carded wool" and Itani "like tufted wool".
101:6-8 turn on a weighing. Sale and Palmer weigh a balance, Rodwell balances, and Pickthall and Itani scales. Sale names what makes it heavy - "whose balance shall be heavy with good works" - and Pickthall supplies the same words in his own brackets, "whose scales are heavy (with good works)", where Rodwell, Palmer and Itani say only that it is heavy. The outcome at 101:7 is "shall lead a pleasing life" in Sale, "a life that shall please him well" in Rodwell, "a well-pleasing life" in Palmer, "He will live a pleasant life" in Pickthall and "in a pleasant life" in Itani.
At 101:9 the renderings part company over what the line names. That it is where they part company furthest, as this study said when it was signed, was withdrawn on 2026-10-03. On the five-rendering measure five verses of this surah stand further apart than it does - the tenth, the third, the sixth, the first and the seventh - and it is sixth of the eleven. Sale and Palmer both have "his dwelling shall be the pit of hell" and Rodwell "his dwelling-place shall be the pit", where Pickthall has "A bereft and Hungry One will be his mother" and Itani "His home is the Abyss". Three read the line as a place, one as a mother, one as an abyss. This study does not choose between them. At 101:10 the question is asked a third time - "how frightful the pit of hell is" in Sale, "what the pit (El-Hawiya) is" in Rodwell, "what it is" in Palmer, "what she is" in Pickthall and "Do you know" in Itani - and Pickthall keeps a feminine pronoun, following from the mother he has at 101:9.
The surah ends at 101:11 with an answer: "It is a burning fire" in Sale, "A raging fire" in Rodwell, "a burning fire" in Palmer, "Raging Fire" in Pickthall and "A Raging Fire" in Itani. The studies What does the Qur'an say about the scale that weighs deeds (mizan)? and What does the Qur'an say about the Day of Judgment? each carry 101:6, with their own reasons.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not say what the event is called in Arabic, or how the word rendered variously as a pit, a mother and an abyss should be read: this study holds no whose usage rights can be verified - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. It does not report an occasion of revelation: this study holds no source either. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 101:1, widening across 11 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 11 passages, each with every cleared translation
11 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Cosa sai tu dell’Abisso?
10. Ir kas tau paaiškins, kas tai yra?
Isheen (Haawiyaan) maal akka taate maaltu si beeksise?

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across five translations - the four public-domain renderings of Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880 and Pickthall 1930, and Itani 2012 - of 101:1-11, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.
How this set was arrived at. This is a study of one surah, so it carries every verse of it: all eleven verses of Surah al-Qari'a, each as its own passage with its own reason. No verse of the surah is left out, so none is recorded as not carried.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
