Abundance distracts you.
What does Surah at-Takathur say?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 102:1 Rivalry in worldly increase distracteth you. This is here because it opens the surah with what has hold of those addressed, named differently: "The emulous desire of multiplying riches and children" in Sale, "THE DESIRE of increasing riches" in Rodwell, "The contention about numbers" in Palmer, "Rivalry in worldly increase" in Pickthall and "Abundance" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about the grave - and where does the questioning of the grave come from?, with a different reason there.
- 02 102:2 Until ye come to the graves. This is here because it follows the opening verse with the graves, worded "visit the graves" in Sale, "come to the grave" in Rodwell, "visit the tombs" in Palmer, "come to the graves" in Pickthall and "visit the graveyards" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about the grave - and where does the questioning of the grave come from?, with a different reason there.
- 03 102:3 Nay, but ye will come to know. This is here because it turns to what those addressed will know, and the renderings word it differently: "Hereafter shall ye know your folly" in Sale, "in the end ye shall know" in Rodwell, "In the end ye shall know" in Palmer, "ye will come to know" in Pickthall and "you will know" in Itani.
- 04 102:4 Nay, but ye will come to know. This is here because it comes back to what will be known, marked as a repeat by "Again" in Sale, "once more" in Rodwell and "And again" in Palmer; Itani opens with "Certainly", and Pickthall repeats his wording word for word.
- 05 102:5 Nay, would that ye knew (now) with a sure knowledge. This is here because it turns to knowing "with certainty of knowledge" in Sale, "with knowledge of certainty" in Rodwell and Itani, "with certain knowledge" in Palmer and "with a sure knowledge" in Pickthall, and Sale alone goes on to "ye would not act thus".
- 06 102:6 For ye will behold hell-fire. This is here because it names the sight, "hell" in Sale and Palmer, "hell-fire" in Rodwell and Pickthall and "the Inferno" in Itani.
- 07 102:7 Aye, ye will behold it with sure vision. This is here because it repeats the seeing, "with the eye of certainty" in Sale, Rodwell and Itani, "with an eye of certainty" in Palmer and "with sure vision" in Pickthall.
- 08 102:8 Then, on that day, ye will be asked concerning pleasure. This is here because it closes the surah with a questioning about what the renderings call "the pleasures with which ye have amused yourselves in this life" in Sale, "pleasures" in Rodwell, "pleasure" in Palmer and Pickthall and "the Bliss" in Itani.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Surah at-Takathur is addressed to people it does not name, "ye" in Sale, Rodwell, Palmer and Pickthall and "you" in Itani. At 102:1 the renderings name what has hold of them differently: "The emulous desire of multiplying riches and children" in Sale, "THE DESIRE of increasing riches" in Rodwell, "The contention about numbers" in Palmer, "Rivalry in worldly increase" in Pickthall and "Abundance" in Itani. At 102:1 the verb is "employeth" in Sale, "occupieth" in Rodwell, "deludes" in Palmer, "distracteth" in Pickthall and "distracts" in Itani. Riches are named only in Sale and Rodwell, and children only in Sale. At 102:2 the renderings continue "until ye visit the graves" in Sale, "Till ye come to the grave" in Rodwell, "till ye visit the tombs" in Palmer, "Until ye come to the graves" in Pickthall and "Until you visit the graveyards" in Itani.
At 102:3 Sale opens with "By no means", Rodwell with "Nay!", Palmer with "Not so!", Pickthall with "Nay, but" and Itani with "Indeed", and they go on to "Hereafter shall ye know your folly" in Sale, "in the end ye shall know" in Rodwell, "In the end ye shall know" in Palmer, "ye will come to know" in Pickthall and "you will know" in Itani. At 102:4 the wording is "Again, by no means" in Sale, "once more" in Rodwell, and in Palmer "And again not so!", with "Certainly, you will know" in Itani. Pickthall's wording at 102:4 is word for word his wording of the verse before. Sale and Rodwell name "your folly" as what will be known, and the others do not name it.
At 102:5 the renderings have "If ye knew the consequence hereof with certainty of knowledge" in Sale, "would that ye knew it with knowledge of certainty" in Rodwell, "Did ye but know with certain knowledge" in Palmer, "would that ye knew (now) with a sure knowledge" in Pickthall, with "(now)" in his brackets, and "If you knew with knowledge of certainty" in Itani. Sale alone goes on to "ye would not act thus". At 102:6 the sight is "hell" in Sale and Palmer, "hell-fire" in Rodwell and Pickthall and "the Inferno" in Itani, where Itani has "would see" and Sale "shall see". At 102:7 it is seen "with the eye of certainty" in Sale, Rodwell and Itani, "with an eye of certainty" in Palmer and "with sure vision" in Pickthall. The verses do not name a time for this seeing, and this study does not say either.
At 102:8 those addressed are "examined" in Sale, "taken to task" in Rodwell, "asked" in Palmer and Pickthall and "questioned" in Itani. At 102:8 this concerns "the pleasures with which ye have amused yourselves in this life" in Sale, "pleasures" in Rodwell, "pleasure" in Palmer and Pickthall and "the Bliss" in Itani. Beyond Sale's clause, the verse does not name the pleasure further, and this study does not name it either.
The study What does the Qur'an say about the grave - and where does the questioning of the grave come from? also carries 102:1-2, with its own reasons.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not identify the people the surah addresses, what the increase or abundance consists of, what the visit to the graves is or the day of the questioning, and it does not say on what occasion the surah was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read the surah: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 102:1, widening across 8 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 8 passages, each with every cleared translation
8 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

102:8 — the verse above
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across five translations - the four public-domain renderings of Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880 and Pickthall 1930, and Itani 2012 - of 102:1-8, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.
How this set was arrived at. This is a study of one surah, so it carries every verse of it: all eight verses of Surah at-Takathur, each as its own passage with its own reason. No verse of the surah is left out, so none is recorded as not carried.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
