By the fig and the olive.
What does Surah at-Tin say?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 95:1 By the fig and the olive. This is here because it opens the surah, and the renderings word its opening differently: "I SWEAR by the FIG" in Rodwell and "By the fig" in Sale, Palmer, Pickthall and Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about swearing by created things - the sun, the fig, the pen?, with a different reason there.
- 02 95:2 By Mount Sinai. This is here because it continues from the fig and the olive with "mount Sinai" in Sale and "Mount Sinai" in Rodwell, Palmer, Pickthall and Itani, named and not described further. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about swearing by created things - the sun, the fig, the pen?, with a different reason there.
- 03 95:3 And by this land made safe. This is here because it adds a place the renderings word differently, "this territory of security" in Sale, "this inviolate soil" in Rodwell, "this safe land" in Palmer and Itani and "this land made safe" in Pickthall, without naming it. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about swearing by created things - the sun, the fig, the pen?, with a different reason there.
- 04 95:4 Surely We created man of the best stature. This is here because it turns to the making of man, worded "a most excellent fabric" in Sale, "goodliest fabric" in Rodwell, "the best of symmetry" in Palmer, "the best stature" in Pickthall and "the best design" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the study Does the Qur'an command female genital cutting?, with a different reason there.
- 05 95:5 Then we reduced him to the lowest of the low. This is here because it follows the making of man with his being brought low, to "the vilest of the vile" in Sale and "the lowest of the low" in Rodwell, Palmer, Pickthall and Itani, with the verb in Palmer, "will send him back", set in the future.
- 06 95:6 Save those who believe and do good works, and theirs is a reward unfailing. This is here because it names those excepted and what they receive, in words the renderings do not all share: "an endless reward" in Sale, "a reward that faileth not" in Rodwell, "a hire that is not grudged" in Palmer, "a reward unfailing" in Pickthall and "a reward without end" in Itani.
- 07 95:7 So who henceforth will give the lie to thee about the judgment. This is here because it puts a question to the person addressed, and the renderings word it differently: "the day of judgment" in Sale, "the Judgment" in Rodwell, "the judgment" in Palmer and Pickthall, and Itani has "the religion?", with the lie given "to thee" in Pickthall.
- 08 95:8 Is not Allah the most conclusive of all judges. This is here because it closes the surah with a question the renderings word differently: "the most wise judge" in Sale, "the most just of judges" in Rodwell, "a most just of judges" in Palmer, "the most conclusive of all judges" in Pickthall, and Itani has "the Wisest of the wise?"
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Surah at-Tin opens with the fig and the olive. At 95:1 the opening words are "I SWEAR by the FIG" in Rodwell, where Sale, Palmer, Pickthall and Itani have "By the fig". At 95:2 the renderings go on to "mount Sinai" in Sale and "Mount Sinai" in Rodwell, Palmer, Pickthall and Itani. At 95:3 the renderings word a place differently: "this territory of security" in Sale, "this inviolate soil" in Rodwell, "this safe land" in Palmer and Itani and "this land made safe" in Pickthall. The verse does not name the land, and this study does not name it either.
At 95:4 man is created "of a most excellent fabric" in Sale, "of goodliest fabric" in Rodwell, "in the best of symmetry" in Palmer, "of the best stature" in Pickthall and "in the best design" in Itani. At 95:5 the verb is "rendered him" in Sale, "brought him down" in Rodwell, "will send him back" in Palmer and "reduced him" in Pickthall and Itani. At 95:5 the renderings word the depth as "the vilest of the vile" in Sale and "the lowest of the low" in Rodwell, Palmer, Pickthall and Itani.
At 95:6 an exception follows, for "those who believe, and work righteousness" in Sale, "who believe and do the things that are right" in Rodwell, "those who believe and act aright" in Palmer, "those who believe and do good works" in Pickthall and "those who believe and do righteous deeds" in Itani. At 95:6 what is theirs is worded "an endless reward" in Sale, "a reward that faileth not" in Rodwell, "a hire that is not grudged" in Palmer, "a reward unfailing" in Pickthall and "a reward without end" in Itani.
At 95:7 the renderings word a question to the person addressed differently: "What therefore shall cause thee to deny the day of judgment after this" in Sale, "who after this shall make thee treat the Judgment as a lie" in Rodwell, "what shall make thee call the judgment after this a lie" in Palmer, "who henceforth will give the lie to thee about the judgment" in Pickthall, and Itani has "why do you still reject the religion?" At 95:7 the lie is given "to thee" in Pickthall, and Itani has "the religion?" where Sale has "the day of judgment" and Rodwell, Palmer and Pickthall a judgment. At 95:8 the closing question is worded "Is not God the most wise judge" in Sale, "is not God the most just of judges" in Rodwell, "Is not God a most just of judges" in Palmer, "Is not Allah the most conclusive of all judges" in Pickthall, and Itani has "Is God not the Wisest of the wise?"
The study What does the Qur'an say about swearing by created things - the sun, the fig, the pen? also carries 95:1-3, and the study Does the Qur'an command female genital cutting? carries 95:4, each with its own reasons.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not identify the fig, the olive or the land the surah opens with, or say more of the mount than its name, or the person it addresses, and it does not say on what occasion the surah was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read the surah: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 95:1, widening across 8 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 8 passages, each with every cleared translation
8 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across five translations - the four public-domain renderings of Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880 and Pickthall 1930, and Itani 2012 - of 95:1-8, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.
How this set was arrived at. This is a study of one surah, so it carries every verse of it: all eight verses of Surah at-Tin, each as its own passage with its own reason. No verse of the surah is left out, so none is recorded as not carried.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
