What does the Qur'an say about wealth and children as the adornment of this life?

Key findingsEditorial

One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.

  1. 01 18:46 WEALTH AND CHILDREN ARE AN ORNAMENT OF THE LIFE OF THE WORLD. But the good deeds which endure are better in thy Lord's sight for reward, AND BETTER IN RESPECT OF HOPE. In because it is the verse the question quotes, and because the comparison is not wealth against nothing but wealth against something else that lasts. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about deeds that outlive a person?, with a different reason there.
  2. 02 3:14–15 BEAUTIFIED FOR MANKIND IS LOVE OF THE JOYS THAT COME FROM WOMEN AND OFFSPRING, and stored-up heaps of gold and silver, and horses branded, and cattle and land. That is comfort of the life of the world; GOD! WITH HIM IS A MORE EXCELLENT ABODE. Say: shall I inform you of something better than that? In as ONE PASSAGE because the itemised list and the question that follows it belong together, and because the text says these things were MADE attractive rather than that wanting them is a fault.
  3. 03 7:32 SAY: WHO HATH FORBIDDEN THE ADORNMENT OF GOD WHICH HE HATH BROUGHT FORTH FOR HIS BONDMEN, and the good things of His providing? Say: such, on the Day of Resurrection, will be only for those who believed. In because it is the text rebuking people for prohibiting what was provided, which is the necessary counterweight to the rest of the set.
  4. 04 57:20 Know that the life of the world is only play, and idle talk, and pageantry, and boasting among you, and rivalry in respect of wealth and children; as the likeness of vegetation after rain, whereof the growth is pleasing to the husbandman, but afterward it drieth up and thou seest it turning yellow, then it becometh straw. In because it is the fullest treatment and its argument is agricultural rather than moral. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about pride in wealth?, with a different reason there.
  5. 05 64:15 YOUR WEALTH AND YOUR CHILDREN ARE ONLY A TEMPTATION, whereas God! with Him is an immense reward. In because it reclassifies the same two things as a test. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about wealth as a test?, with a different reason there.
  6. 06 28:60 And whatsoever ye have been given is a comfort of the life of the world and an ornament thereof; AND THAT WHICH GOD HATH IS BETTER AND MORE LASTING. Have ye then no sense? In because it states the comparison in the shortest form and ends by making it a question of intelligence.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation

Written by the editors. Not a translation, and not a source. It is an editorial restatement of the verses in this study and carries their name because someone has to answer for it.

Six passages, and the honest report is that the Qur'an says these things ARE attractive, says who made them so, and then makes a comparison rather than a prohibition.

3:14 is the itemised list: women and offspring, heaped gold and silver, branded horses, cattle, land. And the verb is BEAUTIFIED FOR MANKIND - made attractive. The text does not say wanting these is a corruption of a purer nature. It says the attraction was built in. Then 3:15 asks: SHALL I INFORM YOU OF SOMETHING BETTER THAN THAT? - and the frame is comparison, not condemnation.

18:46 does the same with two of the items: wealth and children are an ORNAMENT of this life - and the enduring good deeds are better for reward AND BETTER IN RESPECT OF HOPE. The second clause is the interesting one. What lasting deeds are better at is being hoped in.

57:20 argues it agriculturally: the whole thing is like a crop that delights the farmer and then yellows and becomes straw. Not evil - short.

7:32 is the necessary counterweight and it is sharp: WHO HAS FORBIDDEN THE ADORNMENT OF GOD WHICH HE BROUGHT FORTH FOR HIS SERVANTS? The verse is a rebuke to people making things unlawful. Anyone reading this study as an argument for austerity should read 7:32 twice.

64:15 and 28:60 supply the reclassification: a temptation, a comfort, an ornament - and what God has is better and more lasting.

The set does not tell a reader to want less. It tells them the ranking, and 28:60 ends by asking whether they have any sense.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

Scope of this study

This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.

What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.

What this rests on

Opens with 18:46, widening across 6 passages in all.

Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

The versesSource fact 6 passages, each with every cleared translation

6 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.

Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Know that the worldly life is only play, and distraction, and glitter, and boasting among you, and rivalry in wealth and children. It is like a rainfall that produces plants, and delights the disbelievers. But then it withers, and you see it yellowing, and then it becomes debris. While in the Hereafter there is severe agony, and forgiveness from God, and acceptance. The life of this world is nothing but enjoyment of vanity.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall published 1930

Know that the life of the world is only play, and idle talk, and pageantry, and boasting among you, and rivalry in respect of wealth and children; as the likeness of vegetation after rain, whereof the growth is pleasing to the husbandman, but afterward it drieth up and thou seest it turning yellow, then it becometh straw. And in the Hereafter there is grievous punishment, and (also) forgiveness from Allah and His good pleasure, whereas the life of the world is but matter of illusion

Edward Henry Palmer published 1880

Know that the life of this world is but a sport, and a play, and an adornment, and something to boast of amongst yourselves; and the multiplying of children is like a rain-growth, its vegetation pleases the misbelievers; then they wither away, and thou mayest see them become yellow; then they become but grit. But in the hereafter is a severe woe, and forgiveness from God and His goodwill; but the life of this world is but a chattel of guile

John Medows Rodwell published 1861

Know ye that this world's life is only a sport, and pastime, and show, and a cause of vainglory among you! And the multiplying of riches and children is like the plants which spring up after rain - Their growth rejoiceth the husband-man; then they wither away, and thou seest them all yellow; then they become stubble. And in the next life is a severe chastisement, Or else pardon from God and His satisfaction: and this world's life is but a cheating fruition

George Sale published 1734

Know that this present life is only a toy and a vain amusement: And worldly pomp, and the affectation of glory among you, and the multiplying of riches and children, are as the plants nourished by the rain, the springing up whereof delighteth the husbandmen; afterwards they wither, so that thou seest the same turned yellow, and at length they become dry stubble. And in the life to come will be a severe punishment for those who covet worldly grandeur; and pardon from God, and favour for those who renounce it: For this present life is no other than a deceitful provision

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.

How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - wealth + children + ornament; adornment + life + world; beautified + mankind + love; wealth + children + temptation. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.

What was returned and not carried. 3 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 8:28 - near-identical to 64:15, which is kept; carried by What does the Qur'an say about wealth as a test?; 18:28 - the subject is company, not wealth; 33:28 - the choice offered to the Prophet's wives; carried by What does the Qur'an say about the Prophet's household?

Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.

Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.

A dashed outline marks a tag the editors handle with extra care. It describes how this study is filed and shown, not what the verses say.

tafsir

Commentary on the Qur'an: the works in which scholars interpret and explain its verses.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. The platform's scope statement names it as "interpretation (tafsir)".

hadith

A report that claims to preserve something the Prophet Muhammad said or did.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. It follows the platform's standing distinction: the sunnah is the practice, and a hadith is a report claiming to preserve it.

asbab al-nuzul

Accounts of the circumstances in which particular verses of the Qur'an are reported to have been revealed ("occasion of revelation").

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. "Occasion of revelation", in the singular, is the wording the platform's studies use when they say what they rest on.

al-Tabari

A scholar who wrote Jami' al-bayan, a commentary on the Qur'an in Arabic; he died in 923 CE.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The work is as recorded in the platform's rights audit; the date of death is from the Library of Congress name authority file.
