And give good news to those who believe and do righteous deeds; that they will have gardens beneath which rivers flow. Whenever they are provided with fruit therefrom as sustenance, they will say, "This is what we were provided with before," and they will be given the like of it. And they will have pure spouses therein, and they will abide therein forever.
What does the Qur'an actually say about paradise - and where does the '72 virgins' figure come from?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 2:25 The base description the rest sit inside: gardens with rivers beneath, and companions the four call pure - the passage most readers meet first
- 02 3:15 The same promise stated as a comparison with what is desired in this life, which is how the text frames it
- 03 44:54 One of the two wedding verses, and one of the two places where Rodwell and Sale supply the word virgin while Palmer and Pickthall do not
- 04 52:20 The second, with the split between Rodwell and Sale reversed - the reason this study exists is that a reader of one translation never sees the other's wording
- 05 55:56 The modesty clause all four carry, and the verse where Sale alone adds 'besides their spouses'
- 06 55:72 The pavilions verse: four renderings, four registers, from 'kept in their tents' to 'kept in pavilions from public view'
- 07 56:22 Where Rodwell alone carries the word over untranslated as 'Houris', so the English reader meets a foreign word and the others do not
- 08 56:35–38 The passage that says plainly what all four agree on - made them virgins - included because a study that named only the divergences would be hiding the agreement
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The Qur'an describes paradise far more often as a place than as a company. Thirty-four verses in these four renderings speak of gardens with rivers flowing beneath them - 2:25 and 3:15 among the first a reader meets - and the passages describing companions sit inside those garden descriptions rather than standing on their own.
Where the companions are described, the four translations differ so widely that a reader of one is not reading the scene a reader of another is. At 44:54 and 52:20 the same two Arabic words become "bright and large-eyed maids" and "large-eyed maids" in Palmer, "fair ones with wide, lovely eyes" in Pickthall at both, "the virgins with large dark eyes" and "the damsels with large dark eyes" in Rodwell, and "fair damsels, having large black eyes" and "virgins having large black eyes" in Sale - Rodwell at 44:54 and Sale at 52:20 supplying virgin where Palmer and Pickthall do not. At 56:22 Rodwell alone carries that word over untranslated, as "Houris". At 55:72, where the same word appears again, the renderings range from "kept in their tents" in Palmer to "kept in pavilions from public view" in Sale. At 55:56 - a different word - all four have companions untouched before by man or jinn, and Sale alone adds "besides their spouses". And at 56:36 all four say the same thing: made them virgins.
What is not there is a number. The figure 72 occurs in none of these four renderings, and neither does "seventy-two". The same search finds "seventy" in twelve rows elsewhere in the text and "virgins" in twelve, so the zero is a fact about the number and not about the search.
The 72 comes from the literature, which this platform holds nothing from: no hadith source has cleared its rights audit. Whether these descriptions are meant literally or figuratively, and what the same passages promise women, are steps beyond these verses, taken by scholars, and this study does not take them.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
WHAT THIS STUDY DOES NOT ANSWER, and the layer that would. (1) WHERE THE 72 COMES FROM: the figure is found in collections, and no hadith source has cleared this platform's rights audit - sunnah.com's terms have never been readable to this host and a request is open, and the one freely-circulating Arabic corpus was found to rest on a laundered licence chain. The study states the absence from the text and names the layer that holds the number, and stops. (2) What the word rendered maids, fair ones, damsels, virgins and Houris denoted: a lexical question, and the morphology layer carries roots, not semantics. (3) Whether the descriptions are meant literally or figuratively: every tradition of reading has an answer and none of those traditions has cleared; the layer is empty and the academic-historical layer is not built. (4) What the same passages promise women: the verses selected here address their audience as the four render it, and a study that answered this from these verses would be supplying what the text does not - it is named here as an open question, not resolved. (5) Anything a reader should do.
What this rests on
Opens with 2:25, widening across 8 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

And give glad tidings (O Muhammad) unto those who believe and do good works; that theirs are Gardens underneath which rivers flow; as often as they are regaled with food of the fruit thereof, they say: this is what was given us aforetime; and it is given to them in resemblance. There for them are pure companions; there for ever they abide
But bear the glad tidings to those who believe and work righteousness, that for them are gardens beneath which rivers flow; whenever they are provided with fruit therefrom they say, 'This is what we were provided with before,' and they shall be provided with the like; and there are pure wives for them therein, and they shall dwell therein for aye
But announce to those who believe and do the things that are right, that for them are gardens 'neath which the rivers flow! So oft as they are fed therefrom with fruit for sustenance, they shall say, "This same was our sustenance of old:" And they shall have its like given to them. Therein shall they have wives of perfect purity, and therein shall they abide for ever
But bear good tidings unto those who believe, and do good works, that they shall have gardens watered by rivers; so often as they eat of the fruit thereof for sustenance, they shall say, this is what we have formerly eaten of; and they shall be supplied with several sorts of fruit having a mutual resemblance to one another. There shall they enjoy wives subject to no impurity, and there shall they continue for ever

God does not shy away from making an example of a gnat, or something above it. As for those who believe, they know that it is the Truth from their Lord. But as for those who disbelieve, they say, "What did God intend by this example?" He leads astray many thereby, and He guides many thereby; but He misleads thereby only the evildoers.
Lo! Allah disdaineth not to coin the similitude even of a gnat. Those who believe know that it is the truth from their Lord; but those who disbelieve say: What doth Allah wish (to teach) by such a similitude? He misleadeth many thereby, and He guideth many thereby; and He misleadeth thereby only miscreants
Why, God is not ashamed to set forth a parable of a gnat, or anything beyond; and as for those who believe, they know that it is truth from the Lord; but as for those who disbelieve, they say, 'What is it that God means by this as a parable? He leads astray many and He guides many;' - but He leads astray only the evildoers
Verily God is not ashamed to set forth as well the instance of a gnat as of any nobler object: for as to those who have believed, they know it to be the truth from their Lord; but as to the unbelievers, they will say, "What meaneth God by this comparison?" Many will He mislead by such parables and many guide: but none will He mislead thereby except the wicked
Moreover God will not be ashamed to propound in a parable a gnat, or even a more despicable thing; for they who believe will know it to be the truth from their Lord; but the unbelievers will say, What meaneth God by this parable? He will thereby mislead many, and will direct many thereby: but He will not mislead any thereby, except the transgressors

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

There was a sign for you in the two parties that met. One party fighting in the way of God, and the other was disbelieving. They saw them with their own eyes twice their number. But God supports with His help whomever He wills. In that is a lesson for those with insight.
There was a token for you in two hosts which met: one army fighting in the way of Allah, and another disbelieving, whom they saw as twice their number, clearly, with their very eyes. Thus Allah strengtheneth with His succour whom He will. Lo! herein verily is a lesson for those who have eyes
Ye have had a sign in the two parties who met; one party fighting in the way of God, the other misbelieving; these saw twice the same number as themselves to the eye-sight, for God aids with His help those whom He pleases.' Verily, in that is a lesson for those who have perception
Ye have already had a sign in the meeting of the two hosts. The one host fought in the cause of God, and the other was infidel. To their own eyesight, the infidels saw you twice as many as themselves: And God aided with his succour whom He would: And in this truly was a lesson for men endued with discernment
Ye have already had a miracle shewn you in two armies which attacked each other: One army fought for God's true religion, but the other were infidels; they saw the faithful twice as many as themselves in their eye-sight; for God strengtheneth with his help whom he pleaseth. Adorned for the people is the love of desires, such as women, and children, and piles upon piles of gold and silver, and branded horses, and livestock, and fields. These are the conveniences of the worldly life, but with God lies the finest resort.
Beautified for mankind is love of the joys (that come) from women and offspring; and stored-up heaps of gold and silver, and horses branded (with their mark), and cattle and land. That is comfort of the life of the world. Allah! With Him is a more excellent abode
Seemly unto men is a life of lusts, of women, and children, and hoarded talents of gold and silver, and of horses well-bred, and cattle, and tilth;- that is the provision for the life of this world; but God, with Him is the best resort
Fair-seeming to men is the love of pleasures from women and children, and the treasured treasures of gold and silver, and horses of mark, and flocks, and cornfields! Such the enjoyment of this world's life. But God! goodly the home with Him
The love and eager desire of wives, and children, and sums heaped up of gold and silver, and excellent horses, and cattle, and land, is prepared for men: This is the provision of the present life; but unto God shall be the most excellent return

Those who believed and their offspring followed them in faith-We will unite them with their offspring, and We will not deprive them of any of their works. Every person is hostage to what he has earned.

Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it6 of the 7 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
SEED. ASK-style retrieval across the four public-domain renderings. 'gardens rivers beneath' returned 34 verses; 'companions pure' returned 3 (2:25, 3:15, 4:57); 'wide eyed' returned 3 (44:54, 52:20, 56:22); 'virgins' returned 6 (37:48, 38:52, 44:54, 52:20, 56:36, 66:5); 'modest gaze maidens' returned none, because the four render that phrase four different ways - which is the study's subject and is recorded rather than smoothed. The selection is curated from those returns and every passage carries its reason. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
THE ABSENCE IS DERIVED, NOT ASSERTED, and it is scoped to what was counted: across every row of the four public-domain renderings, the literal '72' occurs in 0 rows and 'seventy-two' or 'seventy two' in 0 rows. For contrast and against cherry-picking, the same count finds 'seventy' in 12 rows elsewhere in the text, and 'virgin' or 'virgins' in 12 rows. An absence claim is a count of zero and was derived like any other count.
WHERE THE RENDERINGS PART COMPANY, NAMED BY AUTHORITY - and this is the study's substance, because the differences are not stylistic. At 44:54 and 52:20 the companions are 'maids' (Palmer), 'fair ones' (Pickthall), 'the virgins' at 44:54 but 'the damsels' at 52:20 (Rodwell) and 'fair damsels' at 44:54 but 'virgins' at 52:20 (Sale): Rodwell and Sale supply the word virgin at verses where Palmer and Pickthall do not. At 56:22 Rodwell alone transliterates rather than translates, giving 'Houris'. At 55:56 Sale alone adds 'besides their spouses' to the modesty clause. At 55:72 the companions are 'kept in their tents' (Palmer), 'close-guarded in pavilions' (Pickthall), 'kept close in their pavilions' (Rodwell) and 'kept in pavilions from public view' (Sale). At 56:36 all four agree on 'virgins', and the study says so as plainly as it says the rest.
CONTESTED GROUND, and the rule applied. Written under the standing 109 principle and its 111 symmetry. Nothing is added that the four do not carry: no count, no anatomy, no motive attributed to the text. Nothing all four carry is described below itself either: the four DO describe companions, and a study that reduced that to a euphemism would be concealing what every rendering on the page states. The register is the library's, not the polemicist's and not the apologist's.
THE SAME-WORD CLAIM IS A CLAIM ABOUT THE ARABIC, AND WAS CHECKED THERE, per the hijab precedent. Probing normalise_ar(text_arabic) for 'حور' finds the word in four verses of the companion passages: 44:54 and 52:20 (both 'وزوجنهم بحور عين'), 55:72 ('حور مقصورت في الخيام') and 56:22 ('وحور عين'). The prose was corrected at signature to say so: the staged text named three verses and the Arabic carries four. Other hits of those letters - 7:18, 15:15, 17:18, 17:39, 17:47, 17:101, 25:8, 37:9, 84:14 - are different words and are excluded. 55:56 is a DIFFERENT Arabic word and the prose says so rather than sweeping it in.
THE ARRANGEMENT CLAIM IS A DERIVED REPORT, with its adjacency recorded. Each companion passage stands within or immediately after a description of the place: 44:54 follows 44:52 'in gardens and springs'; 52:20 follows 52:17 'in gardens and pleasure'; 55:56 sits inside the two-gardens passage that opens at 55:46 and follows 55:54's couches; 55:72 follows 55:70's maidens inside the second pair of gardens; 56:22 follows 56:20-21's fruits and fowl; 56:36 follows 56:32-34's fruit in abundance and raised couches. Six of six, checked in the renderings before the clause was allowed to stand.
