These will have the Gardens of Eden, beneath which rivers flow. Reclining on comfortable furnishings, they will be adorned with bracelets of gold, and will wear green garments of silk and brocade. What a wonderful reward, and what an excellent resting-place.
Does the Qur'an forbid gold or silk for men?
In short
- The text says: those who believe and do good are adorned in the gardens with bracelets of gold and wear garments of silk (18:31, 22:23, 35:33); and the question is put, who has forbidden the adornment God brought forth for His servants (7:32).
- The text does not say: that gold or silk is forbidden to men in this life.
- The rest comes from: a report that the Prophet forbade drinking or eating from gold and silver vessels and the wearing of silk is in Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 77: Dress (Bukhari 5837); and a report that wearing silk and gold was made unlawful for the males of his community and lawful for its females is in Jami' at-Tirmidhi, Book 24: The Book on Clothing (Tirmidhi 1720).

Where the renderings split
7:32, Itani: "Who forbade God's finery"
7:32, Pickthall: "Who hath forbidden the adornment of Allah"
7:32, Palmer: "prohibited the ornaments of God"
7:32, Rodwell: "Who hath prohibited God's goodly raiment"
7:32, Sale: "who hath forbidden the decent apparel of God"
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Where the text names gold and silk as things worn, it names them as a reward. At 22:23 Pickthall has "armlets of gold, and pearls, and their raiment therein will be silk", and the same promise stands at 18:31 and 35:33.
The one verse that asks who forbids adornment asks it as a challenge: at 7:32 Pickthall has "Who hath forbidden the adornment of Allah which He hath brought forth for His bondmen". It does not name gold or silk.
No verse forbids gold or silk to men in this life. That comes from outside the Qur'an, from two reports named above, with links.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this rests on
Opens with 18:31, widening across 4 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

4 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Whenever, in their anguish, they would go forth from thence they are driven back therein and (it is said unto them): Taste the doom of burning
Whenever they desire to come forth therefrom through pain, they are sent back into it:. 'And taste ye the torment of the burning
So oft as they, for very anguish, would fain come forth thence, back shall they be turned into it: and - "Taste ye the torment of the burning

Lo! those who disbelieve and bar (men) from the way of Allah and from the Inviolable Place of Worship, which We have appointed for mankind together, the dweller therein and the nomad: whosoever seeketh wrongful partiality therein, him We shall cause to taste a painful doom
Verily, those who misbelieve and who turn men away from God's path and the Sacred Mosque, which we have made for all men alike, the dweller therein, and the stranger, and he who desires therein profanation with injustice, we will make him taste grievous woe
But those who believe not, and seduce others from the way of God, and from the Holy Mosque which we have appointed to all men, alike for those who abide therein, and for the stranger; And those who seek impiously to profane it, we will cause to taste a grievous punishment

As for that which We inspire in thee of the Scripture, it is the Truth confirming that which was (revealed) before it. Lo! Allah is indeed Observer, Seer of His slaves

Then We passed the Book to those of Our servants whom We chose. Some of them wrong their souls, and some follow a middle course, and some are in the foremost in good deeds by God's leave; that is the greatest blessing.
Then We gave the Scripture as inheritance unto those whom We elected of Our bondmen. But of them are some who wrong themselves and of them are some who are lukewarm, and of them are some who outstrip (others) through good deeds, by Allah's leave. That is the great favour
Then we gave the Book for an inheritance to those whom we chose of our servants, and of them are some who wrong themselves, and of them are some who take a middle course, and of them are some who vie in good works by the permission of their Lord; that is great grace
Moreover, we have made the Book an heritage to those of our servants whom we have chosen. Some of them injure themselves by evil deeds; others keep the midway between good and evil; and others, by the permission of God, outstrip in goodness; this is the great merit
And We have given the book of the Koran in heritage unto such of our servants as We have chosen: Of them there is one who injureth his own soul; and there is another of them who keepeth the middle way; and there is another of them who out-strippeth others in good works, by the permission of God.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it2 of the 2 paragraphs signed with this study
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
The question asks whether the Qur'an forbids gold or silk for men. The probe 'silk' returns 30 rows at seven verses (18:31, 22:23, 35:33, 44:53, 55:54, 76:12, 76:21), every one of them in a description of the gardens; 44:53, 55:54, 76:12 and 76:21 are recorded as not carried.
Adornment is read in the study What does the Qur'an say about wealth and children as the adornment of this life?, and the gardens in What does the Qur'an actually say about paradise - and where does the '72 virgins' figure come from? This study names two reports outside the Qur'an and does not grade them.
