Your possessions and your children are a test, but with God is a splendid reward.
What does the Qur'an say about wealth as a test?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 64:15 YOUR WEALTH AND YOUR CHILDREN ARE ONLY A TEMPTATION, whereas God! with Him is an immense reward. In because it is the flattest statement and the word the four translators use - temptation, trial, test - is applied to children as well as money. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about wealth and children as the adornment of this life?, with a different reason there.
- 02 8:28 AND KNOW THAT YOUR POSSESSIONS AND YOUR CHILDREN ARE A TEST, and that with God is immense reward. In because it repeats 64:15 almost exactly in another surah, and because it is phrased as something to KNOW.
- 03 21:35 Every soul must taste of death, AND WE TRY YOU WITH EVIL AND WITH GOOD, for ordeal. And unto Us ye will be returned. In because it says the good is a trial too, which is the premise this whole study rests on. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about trials and testing from God?, with a different reason there.
- 04 89:15–17 As for man, whenever his Lord trieth him BY HONOURING HIM AND MAKING LIFE EASY FOR HIM, he saith: my Lord honoureth me. But whenever He trieth him by straitening his means of life, he saith: my Lord despiseth me. NAY, BUT YE HONOUR NOT THE ORPHAN. In as ONE PASSAGE because it names BOTH conditions as trials and then, in 89:17, tells the reader what the actual failure was - and it is not either condition.
- 05 6:165 He hath placed you as viceroys of the earth and hath exalted some of you in rank above others, THAT HE MAY TRY YOU BY THAT WHICH HE HATH GIVEN YOU. In because it makes the inequality itself the instrument. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about trials and testing from God? and the study What does the Qur'an say about humans as stewards (khalifa) and the trust of the earth?, with different reasons there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Five passages, and 89:15-17 is the one that does the real work.
It describes a man reasoning from his circumstances. When God tries him BY HONOURING HIM AND MAKING HIS LIFE EASY, he says: my Lord has honoured me. When God tries him by STRAITENING HIS PROVISION, he says: my Lord has despised me.
Both are called trials. The man reads the first as approval and the second as rejection, and the passage says he is wrong twice.
Then 89:17 delivers the verdict, and it does not concern either condition: NAY, BUT YE HONOUR NOT THE ORPHAN, and urge not the feeding of the poor, and devour heritages, and love wealth with abounding love. The failure was never in the having or the lacking. It was in what was done from either position.
21:35 states the premise: WE TRY YOU WITH EVIL AND WITH GOOD. Good fortune is not the absence of the test; it is one of its two forms.
64:15 and 8:28 both say wealth AND CHILDREN are a temptation - and the inclusion of children is what stops this being a study about money. What the text is describing is attachment to what one has been given, whatever it is.
6:165 supplies the mechanism: some are raised in rank above others SO THAT HE MAY TRY YOU BY WHAT HE HAS GIVEN YOU. Inequality is described as the apparatus of the test rather than as its outcome.
The related material on hoarding, greed and what will not last is carried by What does the Qur'an say about spending versus hoarding?, What does the Qur'an say about greed and the love of wealth? and What does the Qur'an say about wealth that won't help on the Last Day?
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 64:15, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 5 passages, each with every cleared translation
5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

So be conscious of God as much as you can, and listen, and obey, and give for your own good. He who is protected from his stinginess-these are the prosperous.

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

Say, "Am I to seek a Lord other than God, when He is the Lord of all things?" No soul gets except what it is due, and no soul bears the burdens of another. Then to your Lord is your return, then He will inform you regarding your disputes.
Say: Shall I seek another than Allah for Lord, when He is Lord of all things? Each soul earneth only on its own account, nor doth any laden bear another's load. Then unto your Lord is your return and He will tell you that wherein ye differed
Say, 'Other than God shall I crave for a Lord when He is Lord of all?' but no soul shall earn aught save against itself; nor shall one bearing a burden bear the burden of another; and then unto your Lord is your return, and He will inform you concerning that whereon ye do dispute
SAY: Shall I seek any other Lord than God, when He is Lord of all things? No soul shall labour but for itself; and no burdened one shall bear another's burden. At last ye shall return to your Lord, and he will declare that to you about which you differ
Say, shall I desire any other Lord besides God? Since He is the Lord of all things; and no soul shall acquire any merits or demerits but for itself; and no burdened soul shall bear the burden of another. Moreover unto your Lord shall ye return; and He shall declare unto you that concerning which ye now dispute

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 64:15, 8:28, 21:35, 89:15-17, 6:165, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - your + wealth + children + only + trial; temptation + wealth; that + he + may + try + you + in + what + he + hath + given; we + try + you + with + evil + good. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
