We have appointed a rite for every nation, that they may commemorate God's name over the livestock He has provided for them. Your God is One God, so to Him submit, and announce good news to the humble.
What does the Qur'an say about animal sacrifice (qurbani) - and what specification does it not give?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 22:34–35 In as ONE PASSAGE because 22:35 describes the people 22:34 addresses: for every nation We have appointed a ritual, that they may mention the name of Allah over the beast of cattle He hath given them - and give good tidings to the humble, WHOSE HEARTS FEAR WHEN ALLAH IS MENTIONED, and the patient. Carried because the rite is introduced as something given to every nation, and the people it is for are described by their hearts.
- 02 22:36–37 In as ONE PASSAGE because 22:37 is the judgment on 22:36 and is the reason this study exists: the camels are among the ceremonies of Allah, mention His name over them - THEIR FLESH AND THEIR FOOD REACH NOT ALLAH, BUT THE DEVOTION FROM YOU REACHETH HIM. NOTE THE SPLIT: Itani, Sale, Rodwell and Palmer all render the second item as blood; Pickthall alone has food. Four of the five carry the flesh-and-blood pairing that gives the sentence its force.
- 03 22:28 That they may witness things that are of benefit to them, and mention the name of Allah on appointed days over the beast of cattle - and eat thereof AND FEED THEREWITH THE POOR UNFORTUNATE. This is here because it says where the meat goes. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an command about the pilgrimage (Hajj)? with a different reason.
- 04 108:2 So pray unto thy Lord, and sacrifice. Carried as the shortest statement, pairing the two acts in four words.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The text commands it and then, in the same passage, distinguishes the physical act from what it says actually reaches God.
22:36 gives the instruction: the camels are among the ceremonies of God, so mention His name over them when they are drawn up in lines. 108:2 pairs it with prayer in four words - so pray to your Lord, and sacrifice. 22:34 frames the whole thing as something given to every nation, not a peculiarity.
Then 22:37, which is the verse this study is built around: their flesh and their blood do not reach God - what reaches Him is the devotion from you.
That is the text guarding its own rite against a misunderstanding, and it does it immediately, in the next breath after the instruction. Four of our five translators render the pairing as flesh and blood - Itani, Sale, Rodwell and Palmer; Pickthall alone has flesh and food, and a reader working from him alone would not see the pairing the other four share.
22:28 says what happens to the animal: eat of it, and FEED THEREWITH THE POOR UNFORTUNATE. So the meat is not presented as reaching God; it is given a destination - the people who eat from it and the poor who are fed.
Put the three together and the rite the text describes has three parts - the name of God pronounced, the intention that is the only thing said to reach Him, and the meat that goes to the poor. What is explicitly denied any efficacy is the killing considered by itself.
What the text does not give is the specification: which animals qualify, their age and condition, the days on which it may be done, the shares, who may perform it. That is from the Prophet's practice and the schools of law, and this platform holds none of it - no collection and no fiqh has cleared the rights audit.
The reason 22:37 is carried here is that a study which gave only the command, and stopped, would leave a reader with exactly the impression the passage itself moves to prevent.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 22:34–35, widening across 4 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

We have made the animal offerings emblems of God for you. In them is goodness for you. So pronounce God's name upon them as they line up. Then, when they have fallen on their sides, eat of them and feed the contented and the beggar. Thus We have subjected them to you, that you may be thankful.
And the camels! We have appointed them among the ceremonies of Allah. Therein ye have much good. So mention the name of Allah over them when they are drawn up in lines. Then when their flanks fall (dead), eat thereof and feed the beggar and the suppliant. Thus have We made them subject unto you, that haply ye may give thanks
The bulky (camels) we have made for you one of the symbols of God, therein have ye good; so mention the name of God over them as they stand in a row, and when they fall down (dead) eat of them, and feed the easily contented and him who begs
And the camels have we appointed you for the sacrifice to God: much good have ye in them. Make mention, therefore, of the name of God over them when ye slay them, as they stand in a row; and when they are fallen over on their sides, eat of them, and feed him who is content and asketh not, and him who asketh. Thus have We subjected them to you, to the intent ye should be thankful
The camels slain for sacrifice have We appointed for you as symbols of your obedience unto God: Ye also receive other advantages from them. Wherefore commemorate the name of God over them, when ye slay them, standing on their feet disposed in right order: And when they are fallen down dead, eat of them; and give to eat thereof both unto him who is content with what is given him, without asking, and unto him who asketh. Neither their flesh, nor their blood, ever reaches God. What reaches Him is the righteousness from you. Thus He subdued them to you, that you may glorify God for guiding you. And give good news to the charitable.
Their flesh and their food reach not Allah, but the devotion from you reacheth Him. Thus have We made them subject unto you that ye may magnify Allah that He hath guided you. And give good tidings (O Muhammad) to the good
Thus have we subjected them to you; haply, ye may give thanks! Their meat will never reach to God, nor yet their blood, but the piety from you will reach to Him. Thus hath He subjected them to you that ye may magnify God for guiding you: and give thou glad tidiness to those who do good
By no means can their flesh reach unto God, neither their blood; but piety on your part reacheth Him. Thus hath He subjected them to you, that ye might magnify God for His guidance: moreover, announce to those who do good deeds
Their flesh is not accepted of God, neither their blood; but your piety is accepted of Him. Thus have We given you dominion over them, that ye might magnify God, for the revelations whereby He hath directed you. And bear good tidings unto the righteous

Thus have We given you dominion over them, that ye might return Us thanks

22:37 Tek Allahu nuk arrin as mishi e as gjaku i tyre, por tek Ai arrin devotshmëria juaj.

We have appointed a rite for every nation, that they may commemorate God's name over the livestock He has provided for them. Your God is One God, so to Him submit, and announce good news to the humble.
And for every nation have We appointed a ritual, that they may mention the name of Allah over the beast of cattle that He hath given them for food; and your god is One God, therefor surrender unto Him. And give good tidings (O Muhammad) to the humble
To every nation have we appointed rites, to mention the name of God over what He has provided them with of brute beasts; and your God is one God, to Him then be resigned, and give glad tidings to the lowly
And to every people have we appointed rites, that they may commemorate the name of God over the brute beasts which He hath provided for them. And your God is the one God. To Him, therefore, surrender yourselves: and bear thou good tidings to those who humble them
Unto the professors of every religion have We appointed certain rites, that they may commemorate the name of God on slaying the brute cattle which He hath provided for them. What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across all five cleared translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930, Itani 2012 - of 22:34-35, 22:36-37, 22:28, 108:2, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.
How this set was arrived at. The verse set was chosen by the Editor before the study was written, and is NOT a search result. No probe was run, because on this question a word search would have found the wrong verses or missed the point of the passage. Every reference in that set was rendered from the real text before use and checked against the claim made for it; a reference whose rendered text did not carry that claim was dropped, not forced.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
