And We redeemed him with a great sacrifice.
Does the Qur'an mention the aqiqah?
In short
- The verses usually cited are 37:107, where Abraham's son is redeemed with a great sacrifice; and 22:36, where God's name is pronounced over the animal offerings, which are then eaten and given to the contented and the beggar.
- The text does not say: anything about a sacrifice for a newborn child. The Qur'an does not mention the aqiqah.
- The rest comes from: a report outside the Qur'an, set out in full below: newborn's sacrifice (Bukhari 5472).

Where the renderings split
37:107, Itani: "a great sacrifice"
37:107, Pickthall: "a tremendous victim"
37:107, Palmer: "a mighty victim"
37:107, Rodwell: "And we ransomed his son with a costly victim"
37:107, Sale: "a noble victim"
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The Qur'an does not mention the aqiqah. The nearest verses speak of sacrifice, and one of them of a son.
At 37:107 Abraham's son is ransomed: Itani has "And We redeemed him with a great sacrifice", Pickthall "a tremendous victim" and Rodwell "And we ransomed his son with a costly victim". The verse does not speak of a birth.
At 22:36 Pickthall has "So mention the name of Allah over them when they are drawn up in lines", and "eat thereof and feed the beggar and the suppliant".
Outside the Qur'an, a report in which the Prophet is quoted as saying that an aqiqa is to be offered for a newborn boy, so slaughter an animal for him, is in Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 71: Sacrifice on Occasion of Birth (`Aqiqa) (Bukhari 5472).
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this rests on
Opens with 37:107, widening across 2 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 2 passages, each with every cleared translation
2 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

We have made the animal offerings emblems of God for you. In them is goodness for you. So pronounce God's name upon them as they line up. Then, when they have fallen on their sides, eat of them and feed the contented and the beggar. Thus We have subjected them to you, that you may be thankful.

And the camels! We have appointed them among the ceremonies of Allah. Therein ye have much good. So mention the name of Allah over them when they are drawn up in lines. Then when their flanks fall (dead), eat thereof and feed the beggar and the suppliant. Thus have We made them subject unto you, that haply ye may give thanks
The bulky (camels) we have made for you one of the symbols of God, therein have ye good; so mention the name of God over them as they stand in a row, and when they fall down (dead) eat of them, and feed the easily contented and him who begs
And the camels have we appointed you for the sacrifice to God: much good have ye in them. Make mention, therefore, of the name of God over them when ye slay them, as they stand in a row; and when they are fallen over on their sides, eat of them, and feed him who is content and asketh not, and him who asketh. Thus have We subjected them to you, to the intent ye should be thankful
The camels slain for sacrifice have We appointed for you as symbols of your obedience unto God: Ye also receive other advantages from them. Wherefore commemorate the name of God over them, when ye slay them, standing on their feet disposed in right order: And when they are fallen down dead, eat of them; and give to eat thereof both unto him who is content with what is given him, without asking, and unto him who asketh. Thus have We given you dominion over them, that ye might return Us thanks

Neither their flesh, nor their blood, ever reaches God. What reaches Him is the righteousness from you. Thus He subdued them to you, that you may glorify God for guiding you. And give good news to the charitable.

Thus have we subjected them to you; haply, ye may give thanks! Their meat will never reach to God, nor yet their blood, but the piety from you will reach to Him. Thus hath He subjected them to you that ye may magnify God for guiding you: and give thou glad tidiness to those who do good
By no means can their flesh reach unto God, neither their blood; but piety on your part reacheth Him. Thus hath He subjected them to you, that ye might magnify God for His guidance: moreover, announce to those who do good deeds
Their flesh is not accepted of God, neither their blood; but your piety is accepted of Him. Thus have We given you dominion over them, that ye might magnify God, for the revelations whereby He hath directed you. And bear good tidings unto the righteous

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
The question asks whether the Qur'an mentions the aqiqah. The probe 'aqiq' returns no rows in the five renderings.
This study names one report outside the Qur'an and does not grade it.
