And when it is said to them, "Follow what God has revealed," they say, "We will follow what we found our ancestors following." Even if their ancestors understood nothing, and were not guided?
What does the Qur'an say about following forefathers blindly?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 2:170 And when it is said unto them: follow that which God hath revealed - they say: NAY, WE FOLLOW THAT WHEREIN WE FOUND OUR FATHERS. What! Even though their fathers were wholly unintelligent and had no guidance? In because it is the standard form of the exchange, and because the retort names the two things that would have to be true for the defence to work.
- 02 43:22–24 Nay, for they say only: we found our fathers following a religion, and WE ARE GUIDED BY THEIR FOOTPRINTS ... And the warner said: WHAT! EVEN THOUGH I BRING YOU BETTER GUIDANCE THAN THAT YE FOUND YOUR FATHERS FOLLOWING? They said: we disbelieve in that wherewith ye have been sent. In as ONE PASSAGE because it is the only place the argument is carried through to its end - the offer of something better is made explicitly and explicitly refused.
- 03 5:104 And when it is said unto them: come unto that which God hath revealed and unto the messenger - they say: ENOUGH FOR US IS THAT WHEREIN WE FOUND OUR FATHERS. What! Even though their fathers had no knowledge whatsoever and no guidance? In because the phrase ENOUGH FOR US is the most candid statement of the position anywhere in the set.
- 04 7:28 And when they do some lewdness they say: WE FOUND OUR FATHERS DOING IT AND GOD HATH ENJOINED IT ON US. Say: God, verily, enjoineth not lewdness. Do ye tell concerning God that which ye know not? In because it shows the appeal to ancestry being used to license conduct and then attributed to God, which is the aggravated form.
- 05 10:78 They said: HAST THOU COME UNTO US TO PERVERT US FROM THAT IN WHICH WE FOUND OUR FATHERS, and that you two may own the place of greatness in the land? In because it adds a motive - the accusation that the messenger wants power - which is how the objection actually gets made.
- 06 26:74–76 They said: nay, but we found our fathers acting on this wise. He said: see now that which ye worship, ye and your forefathers! In because Abraham's reply is not an argument but an instruction to LOOK, which is the text's recurring remedy.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
This is one of the most repeated exchanges in the Qur'an, and it always runs the same way.
Someone says: follow what God has revealed. The answer comes back: NO - WE FOLLOW WHAT WE FOUND OUR FATHERS DOING. At 2:170, 5:104, 7:28, 10:78, 21:53, 26:74, 31:21 and 43:22, in almost identical words.
What varies is the reply, and the replies are the study.
2:170 and 5:104 both answer with a conditional that exposes the assumption: WHAT, EVEN THOUGH THEIR FATHERS WERE WHOLLY UNINTELLIGENT AND HAD NO GUIDANCE? The defence only works if the fathers were right, and that is precisely what is not being examined.
43:22-24 is the fullest and the bleakest, because it runs the argument to its end. They say they are GUIDED BY THEIR FATHERS' FOOTPRINTS. The warner puts the decisive question - even though I bring you BETTER GUIDANCE than what you found your fathers following? And the answer is simply: we disbelieve in what you were sent with. The offer is understood and refused.
5:104 contains the most honest sentence in the set: ENOUGH FOR US IS THAT WHEREIN WE FOUND OUR FATHERS. No argument is being made; sufficiency is being asserted.
7:28 shows the aggravated case, where the inherited practice is also attributed to God, and the reply separates the two: God does not enjoin lewdness - DO YE TELL CONCERNING GOD THAT WHICH YE KNOW NOT?
And 26:76 gives Abraham's answer, which is not a refutation at all: SEE NOW THAT WHICH YE WORSHIP, YE AND YOUR FOREFATHERS. Look at it. That is the same remedy 22:46 offers for a closed understanding, and What does the Qur'an mean by hearts and eyes that 'do not understand'? carries it.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 2:170, widening across 6 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

The parable of those who disbelieve is that of someone who calls upon someone who hears nothing except screaming and yelling. Deaf, dumb, and blind-they do not understand.
The likeness of those who disbelieve (in relation to the messenger) is as the likeness of one who calleth unto that which heareth naught except a shout and cry. Deaf, dumb, blind, therefore they have no sense
The likeness of those who misbelieve is as the likeness of him who shouts to that which hears him not, save only a call and a cry; deafness, dumbness, blindness, and they shall not understand
The infidels resemble him who shouteth aloud to one who heareth no more than a call and cry! Deaf, Dumb, blind: therefore they have no understanding

43:24 24. (Perspėtojas) sakė: „Net jei aš atnešiu jums geresnį vedimą nei tą, kurį jus radote savo tėvus sekančius?“ Jie sakė: „Iš tiesų, mes netikime tuo, su kuo tu buvai siųstas.“

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 2:170, 43:22-24, 5:104, 7:28, 10:78, 26:74-76, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - found + our + fathers; fathers + following; forefathers; what + we + found + fathers. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 2 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 21:53 - near-identical to 26:74, which is kept with its reply; 31:21 - near-identical to 2:170; recorded so the repetition is visible.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
