These are nothing but names, which you have devised, you and your ancestors, for which God sent down no authority. They follow nothing but assumptions, and what the ego desires, even though guidance has come to them from their Lord.
How do you tell a Qur'anic promise from a hadith virtue (fadila) from a folk claim?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 53:23 THEY ARE BUT NAMES WHICH YE HAVE NAMED, YE AND YOUR FATHERS, FOR WHICH GOD HATH REVEALED NO WARRANT. THEY FOLLOW BUT A GUESS AND THAT WHICH THEY THEMSELVES DESIRE. In because it names the standard - a revealed warrant - and names the two things people use instead of one: guesswork, and what they would like to be true.
- 02 53:28 AND THEY HAVE NO KNOWLEDGE THEREOF. THEY FOLLOW BUT A GUESS, AND LO, A GUESS CAN NEVER TAKE THE PLACE OF THE TRUTH. In because it states the rule in one clause and is the sharpest sentence in the Qur'an on this.
- 03 17:36 FOLLOW NOT THAT WHEREOF THOU HAST NO KNOWLEDGE. Lo, the hearing and the sight and the heart - of each of these it will be asked. In because it puts the duty on the recipient of a claim and makes the faculties answerable for what they accepted. ALSO CARRIED by the studies What does the Qur'an say about speaking about God without knowledge? and What does the Qur'an say about verifying news before acting on it?, with different reasons there.
- 04 2:111 These are their own desires. SAY: BRING YOUR PROOF IF YE ARE TRUTHFUL. In because it is the demand a reader may make of any claim, and it is put in the Prophet's own mouth. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does 'bring your proof if you are truthful' mean?, with a different reason there.
- 05 7:33 Say: my Lord forbiddeth only indecencies... and that ye associate with God that for which no warrant hath been revealed, AND THAT YE TELL CONCERNING GOD THAT WHICH YE KNOW NOT. In because it makes speaking about God without knowledge a named prohibition, which is what a false virtue-claim is. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about speaking about God without knowledge?, with a different reason there.
- 06 6:116 If thou obeyedst most of those on earth THEY WOULD MISLEAD THEE FAR FROM GOD'S WAY. THEY FOLLOW NAUGHT BUT AN OPINION, AND THEY DO BUT GUESS. In because it says explicitly that majority transmission is not evidence, which is precisely the failure mode in folk claims.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
This question is unusual: it asks for a method rather than a doctrine. The Qur'an supplies one, and it is stricter than most readers expect.
The standard is a WARRANT. 53:23: they are but names which YE HAVE NAMED, ye and your fathers, FOR WHICH GOD HATH REVEALED NO WARRANT. A claim needs authorisation, and the absence of one is not neutral - the verse treats it as disqualifying.
53:28 gives the rule in a single clause, and it is the sharpest sentence in the book on this: A GUESS CAN NEVER TAKE THE PLACE OF THE TRUTH. The word all four translators reach for is conjecture, surmise, opinion, guess - a belief held without grounds.
6:116 closes the most common escape route: IF THOU OBEYEDST MOST OF THOSE ON EARTH THEY WOULD MISLEAD THEE FAR FROM GOD'S WAY. THEY FOLLOW NAUGHT BUT AN OPINION. Wide circulation is explicitly not evidence. That is exactly how folk claims about the virtues of verses propagate.
17:36 puts the duty on the person receiving the claim: FOLLOW NOT THAT WHEREOF THOU HAST NO KNOWLEDGE - and then makes the hearing, the sight and the heart answerable for what they took in.
2:111 gives the reader the question to ask: BRING YOUR PROOF IF YE ARE TRUTHFUL.
And 7:33 names the fault on the other side - TELLING CONCERNING GOD WHAT YOU DO NOT KNOW - as a prohibition in a closed list.
Applied to this platform: a Qur'anic promise can be shown, with a reference, in four renderings. A virtue is a real category with its own science of grading, and this estate holds NO cleared hadith collection, so it can neither quote nor grade one. A folk claim has neither. The honest thing, on the text's own standard, is to say which of the three you are looking at - and to say when you cannot check.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 53:23, widening across 6 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 6 passages, each with every cleared translation
6 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath revealed no warrant. They follow but a guess and that which (they) themselves desire. And now the guidance from their Lord hath come unto them
They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers! God has sent down no authority for them! They do but follow suspicion and what their souls lust after!- And yet there has come to them guidance from their Lord
These are mere names: ye and your fathers named them thus: God hath not sent down any warranty in their regard. A mere conceit and their own impulses do they follow. Yet hath "the guidance" from their Lord come to them
They are no other than empty names, which ye and your fathers have named goddesses. God hath not revealed concerning them any thing to authorize their worship. They follow no other than a vain opinion, and what their souls desire: Yet hath the true direction come unto them from their Lord

For every nation is an appointed time. When their time has come, they cannot delay it by one hour, nor can they advance it.
And every nation hath its term, and when its term cometh, they cannot put it off an hour nor yet advance (it)
Every nation has its appointed time, and when their appointed time comes they cannot keep it back an hour, nor can they bring it on

If thou obeyedst most of those on earth they would mislead thee far from Allah's way. They follow naught but an opinion, and they do but guess
But if thou followest most of those who are in the land, they will lead thee astray from the path of God; they only follow suspicion and they only (rest on) conjecture
But if thou obey most men in this land, from the path of God will they mislead thee: they follow but a conceit, and they are only liars
But if thou obey the greater part of them who are in the earth, they will lead thee aside from the path of God: They follow an uncertain opinion only, and speak nothing but lies

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 53:23, 53:28, 17:36, 2:111, 7:33, 6:116, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - bring + your + proof + if + ye + are + truthful; they + follow + but + a + guess; god + hath + revealed + no + warrant; tell + concerning + god + that + which + ye + know + not; follow + not + that + whereof + thou + hast + no + knowledge. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 13 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 2:80 - an instance of the fault rather than a statement of the rule; 2:169 - near-identical to 7:33, which is kept; 3:78 - carried by What does the Qur'an say about those who twist its meaning? and the study Does the Qur'an say earlier scriptures were changed (tahrif)?; 3:151 - near-identical to 53:23 in force; 5:48 - carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about the Torah and the Gospel?; 6:81 - Abraham's argument; 6:148 - the objectors' fatalism; 7:28 - carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about following forefathers blindly?; 7:71 - near-identical to 53:23; 10:66 - near-identical to 53:28; 10:68 - carried by the study What does the Qur'an teach about God's oneness (tawhid)?; 27:64 - carried by the study What does 'bring your proof if you are truthful' mean?; 45:24 - a denial of the hereafter.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.

A dashed outline marks a tag the editors handle with extra care. It describes how this study is filed and shown, not what the verses say.
