عَالَمِين AALAMIN Read the Qur'an in context Read the Qur'an

In what order was the Qur'an revealed, and why is that not the order of the book?

Key findingsEditorial

One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.

  1. 01 96:1–5 READ: IN THE NAME OF THY LORD WHO CREATETH. CREATETH MAN FROM A CLOT. READ: AND THY LORD IS THE MOST BOUNTEOUS, WHO TEACHETH BY THE PEN, TEACHETH MAN THAT WHICH HE KNEW NOT. This passage stands first in the revelation order this page displays, while the surah it opens sits 96th of 114 in the written Qur'an. That distance between the two positions is the clearest single example of the question this page asks.
  2. 02 74:1–5 O THOU ENVELOPED IN THY CLOAK, ARISE AND WARN. THY LORD MAGNIFY. THY RAIMENT PURIFY. POLLUTION SHUN. This passage stands fourth in the revelation order this page displays, and the surah it opens is the 74th in the written Qur'an. Passages placed near the beginning of that order are found, in the written book, among the short surahs a reader reaches last.
  3. 03 2:1–5 ALIF. LAM. MIM. THIS IS THE SCRIPTURE WHEREOF THERE IS NO DOUBT, A GUIDANCE UNTO THOSE WHO WARD OFF (EVIL). This passage opens the second surah of the written Qur'an, yet it stands at position 87 of 114 in the revelation order this page displays, and is the first Medinan surah in that order. A reader on their second page is therefore reading material that this order places late. The study of the disconnected letters carries these verses too, for a different reason.
  4. 04 110:1–3 WHEN ALLAH'S SUCCOUR AND THE TRIUMPH COMETH, AND THOU SEEST MANKIND ENTERING THE RELIGION OF ALLAH IN TROOPS, THEN HYMN THE PRAISES OF THY LORD, AND SEEK FORGIVENESS OF HIM. This passage stands last in the revelation order this page displays, while the surah it opens is the 110th in the written Qur'an, so it closes the span that the first passage on this page opens. It marks where this order ends. It is not offered as evidence that these were the last verses revealed, which is a traditional position this page does not assert.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation

Written by the editors. Not a translation, and not a source. It is an editorial restatement of the verses in this study and carries their name because someone has to answer for it.

The Qur’an’s present surah order is not a chronological sequence. Traditional accounts commonly place the opening of Surah 96 among the earliest revelations, while Surah 96 appears near the end of the written Qur’an. Long Medinan surahs such as al-Baqarah appear near the front even though they belong to a later phase of Muhammad’s mission.

The Qur’an confirms that revelation came gradually (17:106; 25:32), but it does not provide a numbered list of the order in which all 114 surahs—or the individual passages within them—were revealed. Surahs can also contain material associated with more than one occasion, making a single number for an entire surah an approximation.

Chronological lists are therefore scholarly reconstructions based on traditional reports, literary analysis and historical judgment. They differ. AALAMIN must name the source of every displayed order, explain whether it orders whole surahs or passages, show alternative positions where material, and avoid calling one reconstruction ‘the revelation order’. Chronology can illuminate development and historical setting, but the canonical order remains the primary context in which the Qur’an is transmitted and read.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

Scope of this study

This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.

What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It gives no dates, no length for the Meccan period, no last-revealed verse and no within-surah division for the surahs traditionally held to be mixed: each needs a named chronology or an source, and none has cleared the rights audit. It does not report how any commentator has read the sequence: no has cleared it either — the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no cleared English edition exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading of the ordering's transmission, because that layer is not built. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.

What this rests on

Opens with 96:1–5, widening across 4 passages in all.

Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

The versesSource fact 4 passages, each with every cleared translation

4 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.

Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it6 of the 7 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.

Built from the estate's own structural data, not from a search across renderings: the revelation-order record and the surah revelation positions for the sequence, the recorded place of revelation and the surah verse counts for the Meccan/Medinan labels and the lengths. Verse text is read across all five cleared translations — Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930, Itani 2012 — of 96:1-5, 74:1-5, 2:1-5, 110:1-3, in full, and nothing else. No , no , no occasion of revelation, no sira and no academic history was consulted, because none has cleared the rights audit.

How this set was arrived at. NOT by a search of the renderings. The other studies select verses by searching the renderings for declared language; this question is not answerable that way, because the Qur'an does not state its own revelation order and no search over its text would find one. The four passages here are not evidence for the ordering. They are MARKERS, chosen to show the two orders against each other at four points: the passage this ordering puts first, an early-Meccan passage, the first Medinan surah, and the passage this ordering puts last. A different choice of markers would illustrate the same measured facts.

Where the numbers come from. Every count in the synthesis is derived by query against the live tables on 2026-09-07 and none is quoted from a source: 114 surahs positioned; 3 surahs at the same number in both orders (38, 71, 82); 86 Meccan and 28 Medinan surahs, 4,613 and 1,623 verses; 27 of the last 30 surahs of the mushaf Meccan; positions 1-86 Meccan and 87-114 Medinan in this ordering; mean length 147.3 verses for surahs 1-10 against 4.8 for 105-114; Spearman rank correlation 0.884 between mushaf order and descending length across surahs 2-114.

The ordering is unnamed and this study says so. The revelation-order record holds one row, an unnamed Tanzil ordering, whose own recorded note states that the source does not name which ordering it encodes and that naming the likeliest candidate would be a guess presented as a citation. This study repeats that rather than resolving it. The estate's source record for the same data adds that Meccan/Medinan classification and revelation order are themselves traditional scholarly positions, disputed for a number of surahs, and are stored as this one source states them.

Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. The derived divergence measure runs 1 to 5 across the anchors and is quoted per passage below. All five renderings are present at all 18 verses; none falls in Palmer's seven missing verses.

Editorial revision. Reviewer: AALAMIN Remaining Studies Editorial Review, Volume 1. Version date: 2026-09-16. Correction history: the plain-words answer above replaces the version signed 2026-09-14, and the twelve inclusion reasons across this batch were rewritten as plain English. The Arabic, the translations and the source receipts are unchanged. This page additionally requires review by a qualified Arabic and Qur’anic studies specialist before publication; that condition is not discharged by this revision.

tafsir

Commentary on the Qur'an: the works in which scholars interpret and explain its verses.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. The platform's scope statement names it as "interpretation (tafsir)".

hadith

A report that claims to preserve something the Prophet Muhammad said or did.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. It follows the platform's standing distinction: the sunnah is the practice, and a hadith is a report claiming to preserve it.

asbab al-nuzul

Accounts of the circumstances in which particular verses of the Qur'an are reported to have been revealed ("occasion of revelation").

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. "Occasion of revelation", in the singular, is the wording the platform's studies use when they say what they rest on.

al-Tabari

A scholar who wrote Jami' al-bayan, a commentary on the Qur'an in Arabic; he died in 923 CE.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The work is as recorded in the platform's rights audit; the date of death is from the Library of Congress name authority file.

Ibn Kathir

A scholar who wrote Tafsir al-Qur'an al-'Azim, a commentary on the Qur'an in Arabic; he died in 1373 CE.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The work is as recorded in the platform's rights audit; the date of death is from the Library of Congress name authority file.

al-Qurtubi

A scholar who wrote al-Jami' li-ahkam al-Qur'an, a commentary on the Qur'an in Arabic; he died in 1273 CE.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The work is as recorded in the platform's rights audit; the date of death is from the Library of Congress name authority file.
