- 07 96:7 That he thinketh himself independent. This is here because the renderings do not agree on what makes him overstep: "because he seeth himself abound in riches" in Sale and "at seeing himself get rich" in Palmer, against "That he thinketh himself independent" in Pickthall and "When he considers himself exempt" in Itani.
- 08 96:8 Lo! unto thy Lord is the return. This is here because it is the answer to that, and Sale alone widens it beyond the person addressed: "Verily unto thy Lord shall be the return of all" in Sale, against "Verily, unto thy Lord is the return" in Palmer and "unto thy Lord is the return" in Pickthall.
- 09 96:9 Hast thou seen him who dissuadeth. This is here because it opens the run of questions about a man who stopped another: "What thinkest thou as to him" in Sale, "What thinkest thou of him that holdeth back" in Rodwell, "Hast thou considered him who forbids" in Palmer and "Hast thou seen him who dissuadeth" in Pickthall.
- 10 96:10 A slave when he prayeth. This is here because the renderings name the person stopped differently: "who forbiddeth our servant, when he prayeth" in Sale, "A servant of God when he prayeth" in Rodwell, "a servant when he prays" in Palmer and "A slave when he prayeth" in Pickthall.
- 11 96:11 Hast thou seen if he relieth on the guidance (of Allah). This is here because the question turns to what the man who interfered might himself be: "if he follow the right direction" in Sale, "Hath he followed the true Guidance" in Rodwell, "Hast thou considered if he were in guidance" in Palmer and "Hast thou seen if he relieth on the guidance (of Allah)" in Pickthall, with his own brackets.
- 12 96:12 Or enjoineth piety. This is here because it puts the second half of that question, and the renderings agree closely: "or command piety" in Sale, "or enjoined Piety" in Rodwell, "or bade piety" in Palmer and "Or enjoineth piety" in Pickthall.
- 13 96:13 Hast thou seen if he denieth (Allah's guidance) and is froward. This is here because it names the opposite case, and Sale and Pickthall supply what was denied: "if he accuse the divine revelations of falsehood, and turn his back" in Sale and "Hast thou seen if he denieth (Allah's guidance) and is froward" in Pickthall, with his own brackets, against "Hath he treated the truth as a lie and turned his back" in Rodwell and "Hast thou considered if he said it was a lie, and turned his back" in Palmer.
- 14 96:14 Is he then unaware that Allah seeth. This is here because it closes the questions on being seen: "Doth he not know that God seeth" in Sale, "doth he not know how that God seeth" in Rodwell, "Did he not know that God can see" in Palmer and "Is he then unaware that Allah seeth" in Pickthall.
- 15 96:15 Nay, but if he cease not We will seize him by the forelock. This is here because it is the threat the questions lead to, and all the renderings name the same hold: "Verily, if he forbear not, We will drag him by the forelock" in Sale, "Nay, verily, if he desist not, We shall seize him by the forelock" in Rodwell and "Nay, surely, if he do not desist we will drag him by the forelock" in Palmer.
- 16 96:16 The lying, sinful forelock. This is here because it describes that forelock rather than the man: "the lying, sinful forelock" in Sale, "The lying sinful forelock" in Rodwell and "A deceitful, sinful forelock" in Itani.
- 17 96:17 Then let him call upon his henchmen. Surah al-Alaq is nineteen verses long. It opens with an instruction to read, says what man was made from and what he was taught, then turns to a man who thinks himself beyond reach and to someone who tried to stop another praying.
The instruction at 96:1 is read in two ways. Sale, Palmer, Pickthall and Itani all have a form of read - "Read, in the name of thy Lord, Who hath created all things" in Sale and "READ, in the name of thy Lord" in Palmer - where Rodwell has "RECITE thou, in the name of thy Lord who created". What man was made from at 96:2 divides the renderings by how much they specify: "who hath created man of congealed blood" in Sale and "Who created man from congealed blood" in Palmer, "Created man from CLOTS OF BLOOD" in Rodwell, against "Createth man from a clot" in Pickthall and "Created man from a clot" in Itani.
96:3-5 repeat the instruction and name the teaching. The pen is there in all of them, but what is taught differs: "Who taught the pen" in Palmer, against "Who taught the use of the pen" in Sale, "Who hath taught the use of the pen" in Rodwell and "Who teacheth by the pen" in Pickthall. Then "Who teacheth man that which he knoweth not" in Sale and "Taught man what he never knew" in Itani. 96:6-8 turn to a man who oversteps, and the renderings do not agree on what makes him do it. Sale has "because he seeth himself abound in riches" and Palmer "at seeing himself get rich", where Pickthall has "That he thinketh himself independent" and Itani "When he considers himself exempt" - riches in two of them, self-sufficiency in the others. The answer is the same in all: "Verily, unto thy Lord is the return" in Palmer.
96:9-14 put a series of questions about a man who interfered with someone at prayer. Who that someone is differs: "who forbiddeth our servant, when he prayeth" in Sale, "A servant of God when he prayeth" in Rodwell, "a servant when he prays" in Palmer and "A slave when he prayeth" in Pickthall. What he is charged with also differs - "if he accuse the divine revelations of falsehood, and turn his back" in Sale, against Palmer's "Hast thou considered if he said it was a lie, and turned his back" and Pickthall's "Hast thou seen if he denieth (Allah's guidance) and is froward", with his own brackets - and the questions close on "Doth he not know that God seeth" in Sale.
96:15-18 answer with a threat and a challenge. The hold is the same in Sale, Rodwell and Palmer - "Verily, if he forbear not, We will drag him by the forelock" in Sale and "Nay, verily, if he desist not, We shall seize him by the forelock" in Rodwell - and what is then described is the forelock rather than the man: "the lying, sinful forelock" in Sale and "A deceitful, sinful forelock" in Itani. He is then told to call for help, and the renderings name who he would call very differently: "And let him call his council to his assistance" in Sale, "Then let him summon his associates" in Rodwell, "So let him call his counsel" in Palmer, "Then let him call upon his henchmen" in Pickthall and "Let him call on his gang" in Itani. Against that, "We too will summon the guards of Hell" in Rodwell, where Sale alone says what they are called for: "We also will call the infernal guards to cast him into hell".
The surah closes at 96:19 on what the hearer is to do instead, and the renderings differ over the act: "Obey him not: But continue to adore God; and draw nigh unto Him" in Sale and "Nay, obey him not, but adore and draw nigh" in Palmer, against "Nay, Obey not thou him. But prostrate thyself, and draw near (unto Allah)" in Pickthall and "do not obey him; but kneel down, and come near" in Itani.

Όχι! Στ’ αλήθεια, ο άνθρωπος παραβιάζει (τα όρια σε κακές πράξεις),
कदापि नहीं, निःसंदेह मनुष्य सीमा पार कर जाता है।
No! In verità l’uomo diventa prepotente,
6. Ne, (tačiau) iš tiesų, žmogus nusideda,
Dhugumatti, namni (jallaan) daangaa dabra.
Отнюдь! Воистину, человек преступает предел,
Уистину, човек се узохоли
Kwani! Hakika mtu bila ya shaka huwa jeuri.
Nej, människan trotsar verkligen alla gränser –
Hayır! İnsan gerçekten azgınlık eder.
سچ مچ انسان تو آپے سے باہر ہو جاتا ہے.

(guyyaa qiyaamaa) Deebiin garuma Gooftaa keetiiti.
Воистину, к твоему Господу — возвращение.
а твоме Господару ће сви, заиста, да се врате!
Hakika kwa Mola wako Mlezi ndio marejeo.
Men återfärden är förvisso till din Herre.
Şüphesiz dönüş yalnızca Rabbine olacaktır.
یقیناً لوٹنا تیرے رب کی طرف ہے.

А как ты думаешь: если он [раб] на верном пути
Реци ми ако он мисли да је на Правом путу,
Umeona kama yeye yuko juu ya uongofu?
Har du inte tänkt på huruvida denne [tjänare som står i bön] följer rätt väg?
Ne dersin o (Peygamber) doğru yolda ise.
بھلا بتلا تو اگر وه ہدایت پر ہو.[1]

13. Ar manai, jei jis (Abu Džahl) neigia (tiesą t. y. Koraną) ir nusigręžia,
Yoo inni (Abuu Jahal) (ergamaa) kijibsiisee (islaamummaa) irraa gara gale hoo mee naaf himi?
А как ты думаешь: если он [препятствующий] счёл истину ложью и отвернулся?
Шта мислиш, ако он пориче и окреће се,
Umeona kama yeye akikanusha na anarudi nyuma?
Och vad säger du om den som förkastar tron och vänder sig bort?
Gördün mü? Ya o (engel olan) yalanladı ve yüz çevirdiyse!
بھلا دیکھو تو اگر یہ جھٹلاتا ہو اور منھ پھیرتا ہو تو.[1]

Miti; yoo inni (Abuu Jahal) dhorgamuu baate, sammuu (isa) qabna. [3]
Отнюдь! Если он не прекратит, Мы непременно схватим его за чуб,
Напротив! Ако се не окани, оцрнићемо му чело,
Kwani! Kama haachi, tutamkokota kwa shungi la nywele!
Nej! Om han inte upphör ska vi sannerligen gripa hans pannlugg –

कदापि नहीं, आप उसकी बात न मानें, (बल्कि) सजदा करें और (अल्लाह के) निकट हो जाएँ।[5]

Read across five translations - the four public-domain renderings of Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880 and Pickthall 1930, and Itani 2012 - of 96:1-19, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.
How this set was arrived at. This is a study of one surah, so it carries every verse of it: all nineteen verses of Surah al-Alaq, each as its own passage with its own reason. No verse of the surah is left out, so none is recorded as not carried.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
