Read: In the Name of your Lord who created.
What does the Qur'an say about God teaching the human what he did not know?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 96:1–5 Read in the name of thy Lord Who createth, createth man from a clot. Read - and thy Lord is the Most Bounteous, WHO TEACHETH BY THE PEN, TEACHETH MAN THAT WHICH HE KNEW NOT. In as ONE PASSAGE because the phrase the question asks about is the last line of the opening revelation, and it is unintelligible severed from the command to read that begins it.
- 02 2:31–33 And HE TAUGHT ADAM ALL THE NAMES, then showed them to the angels, saying: inform Me of the names of these, if ye are truthful. They said: be glorified, we have no knowledge saving that which Thou hast taught us. In as ONE PASSAGE because the angels' reply is the counterweight - they too know only what they were taught - and the passage collapses without it.
- 03 55:1–4 The Beneficent hath made known the Qur'an. HE HATH CREATED MAN. HE HATH TAUGHT HIM UTTERANCE. In as ONE PASSAGE because the order is the argument: teaching the Qur'an, creating the man, teaching him speech - revelation named before the creature who receives it.
- 04 6:91 Say: who revealed the Book which Moses brought, a light and guidance for mankind? ... AND YE WERE TAUGHT THAT WHICH YE KNEW NOT, ye and your fathers. In because it applies the same phrase to a whole community's inheritance of scripture. ALSO CARRIED by Did God speak directly to any human, according to the Qur'an? and by the study Did the Qur'an simply borrow its stories from the Bible?, with different reasons there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Four passages, and the first of them is where the Qur'an begins.
96:1-5 is, on the traditional account, the earliest revelation, and its last line is the phrase this question asks about: WHO TEACHETH BY THE PEN, TEACHETH MAN THAT WHICH HE KNEW NOT. What precedes it is a command to READ and a statement that man was made from a clot. The sequence - read, you were made from almost nothing, you were taught what you did not know - is the argument, and the last line is its conclusion.
2:31-33 is the other great instance and it is usually quoted at half length. God TAUGHT ADAM ALL THE NAMES and then challenges the angels to produce them. The part that matters for this question is the angels' answer: WE HAVE NO KNOWLEDGE SAVING THAT WHICH THOU HAST TAUGHT US. The passage does not say that humans know and angels do not. It says both know only what they were given, and that what the human was given was more.
55:1-4 sets the order out plainly and strangely: the Beneficent taught the Qur'an; He created man; He taught him UTTERANCE. Revelation is named before the creature, and speech after him.
6:91 extends the phrase from an individual to a community - ye were taught that which ye knew not, ye and your fathers - said of a people who had received scripture.
What runs through all four is that knowledge is described as GIVEN, and given to a creature the text has just called a clot and a made thing. Seeking knowledge and the pen are taken up by the studies What does the Qur'an say about seeking knowledge? and What does the Qur'an say about the pen and the honour of writing?, and are not answered here; this study is about the phrase and its four homes.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 96:1–5, widening across 4 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 4 passages, each with every cleared translation
4 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

2:32 Dissero: «Gloria a Te!
2:31 31. Ir Jis išmokė Adamą (Adomą) visų dalykų vardus, tada Jis parodė juos angelams ir tarė: „Pasakykite Man jų vardus, jei jūs sakot teisybę.“
2:32 32. Jie (angelai) tarė: „Šlovė Tau, mes neturime žinių išskyrus tai, ko Tu mus išmokei. Iš tiesų, Tu – Visa Žinantis, Visa Išmanantis.“
2:31 Aadamiin maqoota hundaa isii isa barsiise. Ergasii malaa’ikoota irra isaan fideetiin "yoo kan dhugaa dubbattan taataniif maqoota wantoota kanneenii naaf odeessaa” jedhe [11]

2:32 Wakasema: Subhanaka (Wewe umetakasika!) Hatuna elimu isipokuwa yale uliyotufunza Wewe. Hakika Wewe ndiye ajuaye zaidi, Mwenye hekima.
2:33 Akasema: 'Ewe Adam!
Seni eksiklikten tenzih ederiz. Senin bize öğrettiğinden başka hiçbir ilmimiz yoktur. Şüphesiz her şeyi hakkıyla bilen, her şeyi hikmetle yapan sensin.” dediler.

They do not value God as He should be valued, when they say, "God did not reveal anything to any human being." Say, "Who revealed the Scripture which Moses brought-a light and guidance for humanity?" You put it on scrolls, displaying them, yet concealing much. And you were taught what you did not know-neither you, nor your ancestors. Say, "God;" then leave them toying away in their speculation.

And they measure not the power of Allah its true measure when they say: Allah hath naught revealed unto a human being. Say (unto the Jews who speak thus): Who revealed the Book which Moses brought, a light and guidance for mankind, which ye have put on parchments which ye show, but ye hide much (thereof), and (by which) ye were taught that which ye knew not yourselves nor (did) your fathers (know it)? Say: Allah. Then leave them to their play of cavilling
They do not prize God at His true worth when they say, 'God has never revealed to mortal anything.' Say, 'Who revealed the Book wherewith Moses came, a light and a guidance unto men? Ye put it on papers which ye show, though ye hide much; and ye are taught what ye knew not, neither you nor your fathers.' Say, 'God,' then leave them in their discussion to play
No just estimate do they form of God when they say, "Nothing hath God sent down to man." SAY: Who sent down the Book which Moses brought, a light and guidance to man, which ye set down on paper, publishing part, but concealing most: though ye have now been taught that which neither ye nor your fathers knew? SAY: It is God: then leave them in their pastime of cavillings
And they do not make a just estimate of the attributes of God, when they say, 'God has not revealed anything to any man. Say, 'Who revealed the Book which Moses brought, a light and a guidance for the people -- though you treat it as scrapes of paper, some of which you show while you hide much thereof and you have been taught that which neither you nor your fathers knew?' Say, 'God.' Then leave them to amuse themselves with idle talk

The translators word this verse differently
Who does greater wrong than someone who invents falsehood against God, or says, "It was revealed to me," when nothing was revealed to him, or says, "I will reveal the like of what God revealed"? If only you could see the wrongdoers in the floods of death, as the angels with arms outstretched: "Give up your souls. Today you are being repaid with the torment of shame for having said about God other than the truth, and for being too proud to accept His revelations."
Who is guilty of more wrong than he who forgeth a lie against Allah, or saith: I am inspired, when he is not inspired in aught; and who saith: I will reveal the like of that which Allah hath revealed? If thou couldst see, when the wrong-doers reach the pangs of death and the angels stretch their hands out (saying): Deliver up your souls. This day ye are awarded doom of degradation for that ye spake concerning Allah other than the truth, and used to scorn His portents
Who is more unjust than he who devises against God a lie, or says, 'I am inspired,' when he was not inspired at all? and who says, 'I will bring down the like of what God has sent down;' but didst thou see when the unjust are in the floods of death, and the angels stretch forth their hands, 'Give ye forth your souls; today shall ye be recompensed with the torment of disgrace, for that ye did say against God what was not true, and were too proud to hear His signs
But is any more wicked than he who deviseth a lie of God, or saith, "I have had a revelation," when nothing was revealed to him? And who saith, "I can bring down a book like that which God hath sent down"? But couldst thou see when the ungodly are in the floods of death, and the angels reach forth their hands, saying, "Yield up your souls: - this day shall ye be recompensed with a humiliating punishment for your untrue sayings about God, and for proudly rejecting his signs
And who is more unjust than he who forges a lie against God, or says, 'It has been revealed to me,' while nothing has been revealed to him; and who says, 'I will sent down the like of that which God has sent down?' And if thou couldst only see, when the wrongdoers are in the agonies of death, and the angels stretch forth their hands, saying, 'Yield up your souls. This day shall you be awarded the punishment of disgrace because of that which you spoke against God falsely and because you turned away from His Signs with disdain

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 96:1-5, 2:31-33, 55:1-4, 6:91, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - taught + knew + not; taught + adam + names; taught + man; taught + pen. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 4 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 2:102 - teaching of a different kind and source - carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about magic?; 2:239 - on-topic and uses the exact phrase, but the setting is the rule for prayer in danger; that is a separate question. 2:282 - the debt verse - carried by the study Does the Qur'an say a woman is worth half a man?; 44:14 - the accusation against the Prophet - carried by Did the Qur'an simply borrow its stories from the Bible?
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
