Your Lord knows well everyone in the heavens and the earth. We have given some prophets advantage over others; and to David We gave the Psalms.
What does the Qur'an say about David and the Psalms?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 17:55 And thy Lord is best aware of all who are in the heavens and the earth. And We preferred some of the prophets above others, AND UNTO DAVID WE GAVE THE PSALMS. In because it names the book by name, and because 4:163 repeats the statement.
- 02 34:10–11 And assuredly We gave David grace from Us: O YE HILLS AND BIRDS, ECHO HIS PSALMS OF PRAISE. And We made the iron supple unto him, saying: make thou long coats of mail. In as ONE PASSAGE because the two gifts - a voice the hills answer, and metalworking - are one grant. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about iron being 'sent down'?, with a different reason there.
- 03 38:17–20 Bear with what they say, and remember Our bondman David, LORD OF MIGHT; lo, he was ever turning in repentance. We subdued the hills to hymn the praises with him at nightfall and sunrise, and the birds assembled... AND WE MADE HIS KINGDOM STRONG AND GAVE HIM WISDOM AND DECISIVE SPEECH. In as ONE PASSAGE because it lists the whole grant and calls him EVER TURNING IN REPENTANCE, which is the note the next passage develops.
- 04 38:21–26 And hath the story of the litigants come unto thee? How they climbed the wall into the royal chamber... two litigants, one of whom hath wronged the other. Ninety-nine ewes hath my brother... AND DAVID GUESSED THAT WE HAD TRIED HIM, and he sought forgiveness of his Lord, and he bowed himself and fell down prostrate and repented. In as ONE PASSAGE because it is the Qur'an's fullest treatment of David and it is a story about him judging badly. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about a just ruler and just governance?, with a different reason there.
- 05 2:251 And David slew Goliath; and GOD GAVE HIM THE KINGDOM AND WISDOM, and taught him of that which He willeth. In because it is the only mention of Goliath and it attaches the kingdom to the killing.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The Qur'an names the Psalms twice - at 17:55 and 4:163 - and both times it does so in a single clause: AND UNTO DAVID WE GAVE THE PSALMS. It quotes nothing from them and describes their contents nowhere.
What it describes instead is a VOICE. 34:10: O YE HILLS AND BIRDS, ECHO HIS PSALMS OF PRAISE. And 38:18-19 elaborates: the hills subdued to hymn with him at nightfall and sunrise, and the birds assembled, all of them turning to him. The gift is not a text but a performance the natural world joins.
Alongside it comes iron. 34:10-11: WE MADE THE IRON SUPPLE UNTO HIM - and an instruction to make coats of mail and measure the links. The same passage grants both.
38:20 completes the list: a strong kingdom, WISDOM, and DECISIVE SPEECH.
And then 38:21-26, which is the longest David passage in the book and is not about any of that. Two litigants climb the wall into his private chamber. One states his case - ninety-nine ewes against one. David judges immediately. And then: DAVID GUESSED THAT WE HAD TRIED HIM, and he sought forgiveness and fell prostrate and repented.
38:17 has already prepared this by calling him EVER TURNING IN REPENTANCE. The Qur'an's David is a king with a voice the mountains answer, and its fullest story about him is one in which he judges before hearing the second side.
2:251 supplies the beginning: he slew Goliath, and God gave him the kingdom and wisdom.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 17:55, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

O David, verily We have appointed thee a sovereign prince in the earth: Judge therefore between men with truth; and follow not thy own lust, lest it cause thee to err from the way of God: For those who err from the way of God, shall suffer a severe punishment, because they have forgotten the day of account

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

– i u prepirci me pobijedi.”
38:25 I Mi smo mu to oprostili, i on je, doista, blizak Nama i divno prebivalište ga čeka.

38:25 So vergaben Wir ihm dies.
38:21 Ήρθε σε σένα (ω, Μωχάμμαντ) η είδηση των δύο αντίπαλων (Αγγέλων), όταν μπήκαν στο δωμάτιο της λατρείας του (Δαβίδ, χωρίς να περάσουν από την κλειστή πόρτα του);

38:22 Walipomuingilia Daudi, naye akawaogopa. Wakasema: Usiogope!

So they routed them by Allah's leave and David slew Goliath; and Allah gave him the kingdom and wisdom, and taught him of that which He willeth. And if Allah had not repelled some men by others the earth would have been corrupted. But Allah is a Lord of Kindness to (His) creatures
And they put them to flight by the permission of God, and David killed Galut, and God gave him the kingdom and wisdom, and taught him of what He willed. And were it not for God's repelling men one with another the earth would become spoiled; but God is Lord of grace over the worlds
And by the will of God they routed them; and (Daood) David slew Goliath; and God gave him the kingship and wisdom, and taught him according to His will: and were it not for the restraint of one by means of the other, imposed on men by God, verily the earth had been utterly corrupted.

And when Saul marched forth with his forces, he said, "God will test you by a river: He who drinketh of it shall not be of my band; but he who shall not taste it, drinking a drink out of the hand excepted, shall be of my band." And, except a few of them, they drank of it. And when they had passed it, he and those who believed with him, the former said, "We have no strength this day against (Djalout) Goliath and his forces:" But they who held it as certain that they must meet God, said, "How oft, by God's will, hath a small host vanquished a numerous host! and God is with the steadfastly enduring
And when Jalut departed with his soldiers, he said, verily God will prove you by the river: For he who drinketh thereof, shall not be on my side -- but he who shall not taste thereof he shall be on my side -- except he who drinketh a draught out of his hand. And they drank thereof, except a few of them. And when they had passed the river, he and those who believed with him, they said, we have no strength to day, against Jalut and his forces. But they who considered that they should meet God at the resurrection, said, how often hath a small army discomfited a great army, by the will of God? And God is with those who patiently persevere

These are God's revelations, which We recite to you in truth. You are one of the messengers.
These are the portents of Allah which We recite unto thee (Muhammad) with truth, and lo! thou art of the number of (Our) messengers
These are the signs of God, we recite them to thee in truth, for, verily, thou art of those who are sent
Such are the signs of God: with truth do we rehearse them to thee, for one of the Sent Ones art Thou
These are the signs of God: We rehearse them unto thee with truth, and thou art surely one of those who have been sent by God

These messengers: We gave some advantage over others. To some of them God spoke directly, and some He raised in rank. We gave Jesus son of Mary the clear miracles, and We strengthened him with the Holy Spirit. Had God willed, those who succeeded them would not have fought one another, after the clear signs had come to them; but they disputed; some of them believed, and some of them disbelieved. Had God willed, they would not have fought one another; but God does whatever He desires.
Of those messengers, some of whom We have caused to excel others, and of whom there are some unto whom Allah spake, while some of them He exalted (above others) in degree; and We gave Jesus, son of Mary, clear proofs (of Allah's Sovereignty) and We supported him with the holy Spirit. And if Allah had so wiled it, those who followed after them would not have fought one with another after the clear proofs had come unto them. But they differed, some of them believing and some disbelieving. And if Allah had so willed it, they would not have fought one with another; but Allah doeth what He will
These apostles have we preferred one of them above another. Of them is one to whom God spake; and we have raised some of them degrees; and we have given Jesus the son of Mary manifest signs, and strengthened him by the Holy Spirit. And, did God please, those who came after them would not have fought after there came to them manifest signs. But they did disagree, and of them are some who believe, and of them some who misbelieve, but, did God please, they would not have fought, for God does what He will
Some of the apostles we have endowed more highly than others: Those to whom God hath spoken, He hath raised to the loftiest grade, and to Jesus the Son of Mary we gave manifest signs, and we strengthened him with the Holy Spirit. And if God had pleased, they who came after them would not have wrangled, after the clear signs had reached them. But into disputes they fell: some of them believed, and some were infidels; yet if God had pleased, they would not have thus wrangled: but God doth what he will
These are the apostles; we have preferred some of them before others: Some of them hath God spoken unto, and hath exalted the degree of others of them. And we gave unto Jesus the son of Mary manifest signs, and strengthened him with the holy spirit. And if God had pleased, they who came after those apostles, would not have contended among themselves, after manifest signs had been shewn unto them. But they fell to variance; therefore some of them believed, and some of them believed not; and if God had so pleased, they would not have contended among themselves, but God doth what he will

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 17:55, 34:10-11, 38:17-20, 38:21-26, 2:251, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - we + gave + unto + david + the + psalms; o + ye + hills + echo + his + psalms; made + the + iron + supple; we + made + strong + his + kingdom. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 1 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 4:163 - near-identical to 17:55; recorded so the repetition is visible.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
