We sent Our messengers with the clear proofs, and We sent down with them the Book and the Balance, that humanity may uphold justice. And We sent down iron, in which is violent force, and benefits for humanity. That God may know who supports Him and His messengers invisibly. God is Strong and Powerful.
What does the Qur'an say about iron being 'sent down'?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 57:25 We sent Our messengers with clear proofs, and revealed with them the Scripture and the Balance that mankind may observe right measure; AND HE REVEALED IRON, wherein is mighty power and uses for mankind, and that God may know who helpeth Him and His messengers, unseen. This is the verse the question is about. In Pickthall, Sale, Palmer and Itani one verb carries the Scripture and the Balance and then the iron - revealed, or sent down - where Rodwell has caused to descend and then sent down; the surah's name is Al-Hadid, The Iron. It also appears in What does the Qur'an say about balance in nature (mizan) - and about disturbing it?, for a different reason.
- 02 34:10 We gave David grace from Us: O ye hills and birds, echo his psalms; and We made the iron supple unto him. In because it is the other place iron is given rather than found, and here the gift is a change in the metal's behaviour.
- 03 18:96 Give me pieces of iron - till, when he had levelled up the gap between the cliffs, he said: blow! - till, when he had made it a fire, he said: bring me molten copper to pour thereon. Here iron is worked in the course of the passage: pieces of iron are set between the cliffs, made into a fire and covered with molten copper. The earlier part of the same passage, 18:83-90, is in Does the Qur'an say the sun sets in a muddy spring?
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
One verse carries this question, and the argument about it turns on a single verb.
57:25 says God revealed - or sent down - iron, in which is mighty power and uses for mankind. The claim built on it is that this anticipates the astrophysical fact that iron is formed in stars and arrived on earth from space.
The verse itself makes the claim hard to rest on, for a reason internal to the sentence. THE SAME VERB governs three things in a row: He revealed with them the Scripture and the Balance ... and He revealed iron. Scripture is not sent down from space. Whatever the verb is doing, it is doing it to a book, to a measure, and to a metal, in one construction. Reading it as physical descent for the third item and as revelation for the first two is a choice the sentence does not make.
The rest of the verse is about purpose, not origin: wherein is mighty power AND USES FOR MANKIND, and that God may know who helps Him and His messengers unseen. Iron appears there as something given for use - and, in a surah that has just paired Scripture with the Balance, as the third term in a series about what human beings have been equipped with.
34:10 supports that reading. Iron there is not sent anywhere; it is made SUPPLE for David. And 18:96 shows it being worked - pieces of iron, a fire, molten copper poured over.
The estate holds four English renderings and a morphology layer that reaches every verse but not every word; adjudicating what the verb means in seventh-century usage is a lexical question this platform cannot settle, and has not cleared the rights audit. The study reports the verse, names the argument, and shows why the sentence's own structure is the difficulty.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 57:25, widening across 3 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

We verily sent Our messengers with clear proofs, and revealed with them the Scripture and the Balance, that mankind may observe right measure; and He revealed iron, wherein is mighty power and (many) uses for mankind, and that Allah may know him who helpeth Him and His messengers, though unseen. Lo! Allah is Strong, Almighty
We did send our apostles with manifest signs; and we did send down among you the Book and the balance, that men might stand by justice; and we sent down iron in which is both keen violence and advantages to men; and that God might know who helps Him and His apostles in secret; verily, God is strong and mighty
We have sent our apostles with the clear tokens, and we have caused the Book and the balance to descend with them, that men might observe fairness. And we have sent down IRON. Dire evil resideth in it, as well as advantage, to mankind! God would know who will assist Him and his apostle in secret. Verily, God is Powerful, Strong
We formerly sent our apostles with evident miracles and arguments; and We sent down with them the scriptures, and the balance, that men might observe justice: And We sent them down iron, wherein is mighty strength for war, and various advantages unto mankind: That God may know who assisteth him and his apostles in secret; for God is strong and mighty

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 57:25, 34:10, 18:96, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - iron; sent + down + iron. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 2 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried, rather than silently discarded: 17:50; 22:21. The reason for each was not recorded.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
Correction record, 2026-09-17. At 18:96, a claim that this is the one place iron is worked was removed, and a cross-reference was reworded to say which part of the passage the other study carries. The verses shown and their translations are unchanged.
