They said, "O Zul-Qarnain, the Gog and Magog are spreading chaos in the land. Can we pay you, to build between us and them a wall?"
What does the Qur'an say about Gog and Magog?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 18:94–98 They said: O Dhu'l-Qarnayn, Gog and Magog are spoiling the land - may we pay thee tribute to set a barrier? ... Give me pieces of iron ... And they were not able to surmount it nor to pierce it. He said: this is a mercy from my Lord; and when my Lord's promise cometh He will lay it low. These verses tell one episode: asked for a barrier against Gog and Magog, Dhu'l-Qarnayn builds it of iron, they cannot scale or pierce it, and he says his Lord will lay it low when His promise comes. The earlier part of the same passage, 18:83-90, is in Does the Qur'an say the sun sets in a muddy spring?
- 02 21:96–97 Until, when Gog and Magog are let loose and they hasten out of every mound - and the True Promise draweth nigh, then behold, staring wide in terror, the eyes of those who disbelieve. In as ONE PASSAGE because the release and the terror are one sentence, and because this is the only place Gog and Magog appear outside the Dhul-Qarnayn story.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Two passages, in two surahs, and that is the whole of it.
In 18:94-98 they are a present problem: a people spoiling the land, and a ruler who builds a barrier of iron and molten copper that they cannot climb or breach. The passage is careful about what the barrier is - the builder refuses tribute for it and calls it a mercy from his Lord - and it is even more careful about how long it lasts: WHEN MY LORD'S PROMISE COMETH, HE WILL LAY IT LOW.
In 21:96-97 that promise arrives. Gog and Magog are let loose, they pour from every height, and the True Promise draws near.
So the text gives them a location behind a wall, a character - spoilers of the land - and a role at the end. It does not say who they are, where the barrier stands, what they look like, or how many. The very detailed accounts of both, familiar from later literature, are not here: they come from and from commentary, and no hadith collection and no has cleared the rights audit.
One thing worth a reader's attention. The four translators handle the names differently - Gog and Magog, Yajuj and Majuj - and the barrier is variously a rampart, a barrier and a wall. Nothing in these renderings identifies the site.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 18:94–98, widening across 2 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 2 passages, each with every cleared translation
2 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

18:96 96. Duokite man geležies gabalus (plytas).“ Tada, kai jis užpildė plyšį tarp dviejų kalnų skardžių, tarė: „Papūskite“. Tada, kai jis padarė juos (raudonus kaip) ugnimi, jis tarė: „Atneškite man išlydytą varį užpilti ant jų.“
18:94 (Isaanis) nijedhan “Yaa Zalqarnayn!, Ya’ajuujiifi Ma’ajuuj dachii keessatti badii hojjatoodha, baasii (kafaltii) siif goonuu Nuufi isaan giddutti cufaa godhuu irratti?” [29]
18:95 (Innis) ni jedhe: “Waan Gooftaan kiyya isa keessatti naaf mijeessetu (kafaltii teessanirra) caala. humnaan na gargaaraa, Gidduu keessaniifi isaaniitti cufaa nan godhaa, .
18:96 Muraa Sibiilaa naaf kennaa.” hanga iddoo gaara lamaan gidduu jiru (jaaree) guute “afuufaa” jedheen, hanga ibidda (diimaa) isa godhetti “sibiila baqe isa irrattin dhangalaasa naa fidaa ” jedhe.
18:97 (Ya’ajuujifi Ma’ajuuj) (dheerinna isaatiif) isa irra koruu hin dandeenye; (jalaanis) (jajjabinna isaatiif) isa uruu hin dandeenye.
18:98 (Zulqarnayn) ni jedhe: “Kun rahmata Gooftaa kiyya irraa ta’e, Yeroo waadaan Gooftaa kiyyaa dhufe, bittinnaa’aa isa godha, Waadaan Gooftaa kiyyaa dhugaa ta’eera.”
18:94 Wakasema: Ewe Dhul-Qarnain!
18:97 Basi hawakuweza kukikwea, wala hawakuweza kukitoboa.
18:96 “Bana (yeterince) demir madeni getirin” dedi. İki yamacın arasındaki boşluğu (dağlarla) bir hizaya getirince; “Körükleyin!” dedi. Demiri eritip kor (gibi) yapınca da; “Bana erimiş bakır getirin, bunun üzerine boşaltayım.” dedi.
18:97 Artık onu ne aşabildiler, ne de delebildiler.
18:98 “İşte bu, Rabbimden bir rahmettir. Rabbimin vaadi gelince onu dümdüz eder, Rabbimin vaadi haktır.” dedi.

21:96 Nihayet Ye’cüc ve Me’cüc’ün (seddi) açıldığı zaman her tepeden akın ederler.
“Eyvah bizlere! Doğrusu biz bundan gafildik. Hatta biz zalim kimselermişiz.” derler.

Whoever does righteous deeds, and is a believer, his effort will not be denied. We are writing it down for him.
Then whoso doeth some good works and is a believer, there will be no rejection of his effort. Lo! We record (it) for him
and he who acts aright, and he who is a believer, there is no denial of his efforts, for, verily, we will write them down for him
And whoso shall do the things that are right, and be a believer, his efforts shall not be disowned: and surely will we write them down for him
Whosoever shall do good works, being a true believer, there shall be no denial of the reward due to his endeavours; and We will surely write it down unto him

There is a ban on the town that We had destroyed-that they will not return.
And there is a ban upon any community which We have destroyed: that they shall not return
There is a ban upon a city which we have destroyed that they shall not return
There is a ban on every city which we shall have destroyed, that they shall not rise again
An inviolable prohibition is laid on every city which We shall have destroyed

You and what you worship besides God are fuel for Hell. You will descend into it.
Lo! ye (idolaters) and that which ye worship beside Allah are fuel of hell. Thereunto ye will come
Verily, ye, and what ye serve beside God, shall be the pebbles of hell, to it shall ye go down
Verily, ye, and what ye worship beside God, shall be fuel for hell: ye shall go down into it
Verily both ye, O men of Mecca, and the idols which ye worship besides God, shall be cast as fuel into hell fire: Ye shall go down into the same

Had these been gods, they would not have descended into it. All will abide in it.
If these had been gods they would not have come thither, but all will abide therein
Had these been God's they would not have gone down thereto: but all shall dwell therein for aye
Were these gods, they would not go down into it; but they shall all abide in it for ever
If these were really gods, they would not go down into the same: And all of them shall remain therein for ever
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 18:94-98, 21:96-97, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - gog; magog; yajuj; rampart; barrier + iron. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
Correction record, 2026-09-17. At 18:94-98, a cross-reference was reworded to say exactly which part of the passage the other study carries. The verses shown and their translations are unchanged.
