Many of the People of the Book wish to turn you back into unbelievers after you have believed, out of envy on their part, after the Truth has become clear to them. But pardon and overlook, until God brings His command. God has power over all things.
What does the Qur'an say about the evil eye?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 2:109 Many of the people of the Scripture wish to turn you back, out of envy in their souls. In because it names envy as a motive rather than as a power.
- 02 4:54 Do they envy people for what God of His bounty has given them? In because it puts envy as a question about God's giving rather than about the envied.
- 03 45:17 They differed only after knowledge came to them, through envy among themselves. In because it attributes a division to envy.
- 04 113:5 From the evil of the envier when he envieth - the closing verse of the sura of refuge, and the nearest thing in the corpus to what the question asks about.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The phrase the question asks about does not appear. In none of the four public-domain renderings is there an evil eye. What there is, is envy.
113:5 is the closest: the last verse of a short sura of refuge, seeking protection from the evil of the envier when he envieth. All four renderings agree closely on it, and it is the only verse here that treats envy as something to seek refuge from.
The other three treat envy as a motive rather than a power. 2:109 says many of the people of the Scripture wish to turn the believers back out of envy in their souls, and instructs forgiving and being indulgent. 4:54 asks whether they envy people for what God of His bounty has given them - putting the question back on God's giving rather than on the one envied. And 45:17 attributes a division to envy among people who already had knowledge.
So what the study can show is a word about people, and one verse about seeking refuge. Whether these verses underwrite what is commonly meant by the evil eye is not settled inside them, and settling it needs the interpretation layer, which is blocked on rights.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 2:109, widening across 4 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 4 passages, each with every cleared translation
4 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Many of the people of the Scripture long to make you disbelievers after your belief, through envy on their own account, after the truth hath become manifest unto them. Forgive and be indulgent (toward them) until Allah give command. Lo! Allah is Able to do all things
Many of those who have the Book would fain turn you back into misbelievers after ye have once believed, through envy from themselves, after the truth has been made manifest to them; but pardon and shun them till God brings His command; verily, God is mighty over all
Many of the people of the Book desire to bring you back to unbelief after ye have believed, out of selfish envy, even after the truth hath been clearly shewn them. But forgive them, and shun them till God shall come in with His working. Truly God hath power over all things
Many of those unto whom the scriptures have been given, desire to render you again unbelievers, after ye have believed; out of envy from their souls, even after the truth is become manifest unto them; but forgive them, and avoid them, till God shall send his command; for God is omnipotent

Or do they own a share of the kingdom? Then they would not give people a speck.
Or have they even a share in the Sovereignty? Then in that case, they would not give mankind even the speck on a date-stone
Shall they have a portion of the kingdom? Why even then they would not give to men a jot
Shall they have a share in the kingdom who would not bestow on their fellow men even the speck in a date stone

Among them are those who believed in it, and among them are those who held back from it. Hell is a sufficient Inferno.
And of them were (some) who believed therein and of them were (some) who turned away from it. Hell is sufficient for (their) burning

Those who reject Our revelations-We will scorch them in a Fire. Every time their skins are cooked, We will replace them with other skins, so they will experience the suffering. God is Most Powerful, Most Wise.
Lo! Those who disbelieve Our revelations, We shall expose them to the Fire. As often as their skins are consumed We shall exchange them for fresh skins that they may taste the torment. Lo! Allah is ever Mighty, Wise
Verily, those who disbelieve in our signs, we will broil them with fire; whenever their skins are well done, then we will change them for other skins, that they may taste the torment. Verily, God is glorious and wise

113:5 — the verse above
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four translations that had cleared when this study was written - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 2:109, 4:54, 45:17, 113:5, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.
The basis this restatement was written over. This study was signed on 5 September 2026, when four English renderings had cleared. Itani 2012 cleared on 7 September 2026, and five have cleared since. The verse selection, the reading and every finding here are the work done over those four; the divergence figures below are the live measure, computed over all five. Nothing here has been re-read against Itani, and no finding claims his agreement.
How this set was arrived at. Candidates came from a conjunctive word search over the four renderings then cleared, run in mushaf order, qualifying where every probe term was present in at least three of those four. Why each passage is in the study is stated per passage, and is signed with this prose. THE PROBE TERMS WERE NOT RECORDED AT THE TIME AND CANNOT BE REPRODUCED, so that search has not been re-run over five and this restatement does not claim it was. The verse set is therefore exactly the set signed on 5 September 2026, unchanged: no verse was added and none was dropped.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. The derived divergence measure is computed over all five cleared renderings, Itani included, and is restated here so that this page and every verse page report the same measure. Across this set it runs from band 1 at 113:5 (0.40), where the five stand closest, to band 4 at 2:109 (0.67), where they stand furthest apart. The version signed when four translations were cleared gave band 1 at 113:5 (0.41) and band 5 at 2:109 (0.70); the two endpoint verses are unchanged, the figures are not. The study names the differences it turns on and does not choose between them.
