Those of you who have affluence and means should not refuse to give to the relatives, and the needy, and the emigrants for the sake of God. And let them pardon, and let them overlook. Do you not love for God to pardon you? God is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
What does the Qur'an say about forgiveness and pardoning?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 24:22 Let not those who possess dignity and ease swear not to give to kindred and the needy and those who fled; let them forgive and show indulgence. Would ye not love that God should forgive you? In because it is the clearest case: a real grievance, a refusal to give, and an argument from God's forgiveness to yours.
- 02 42:37 And those who, when they are angry, forgive. In because pardon appears here as a settled characteristic rather than a decision. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about controlling anger?, with a different reason there.
- 03 64:14 Among your wives and your children there are enemies for you; but if ye efface and overlook and forgive, then God is Forgiving, Merciful. In because it names three distinct acts - efface, overlook, forgive - and locates them inside a household.
- 04 12:92 He said: have no fear this day; may God forgive you, and He is the most merciful of those who show mercy. In because it is the one place in the set where a named person actually pardons, and the wrong pardoned was serious.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
This study is about people pardoning people, and once that line is held only four verses survive.
That is the finding worth stating first. A search for forgiveness in the Qur'an returns overwhelmingly verses about GOD forgiving, or about people ASKING God to forgive. Seven such verses are recorded as drops below rather than quietly discarded. What the question asks about - one person letting another off - is rarer.
24:22 is the strongest, and it is not abstract. Someone with means has sworn not to give to a relative who wronged them. The verse tells them to forgive and show indulgence, and then makes the argument explicitly: would you not love that God should forgive you?
64:14 puts the same demand in a harder place. Among your wives and your children there are enemies for you - and then: if ye efface and overlook and forgive. Three verbs, and the text does not treat them as one.
12:92 is the only narrative instance: Joseph, to the brothers who threw him in a well. Have no fear this day.
This study is NOT about forgiving yourself. The study What does the Qur'an say about guilt and forgiving yourself? covers that, and the two should be read together rather than merged.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 24:22, widening across 4 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 4 passages, each with every cleared translation
4 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Whatever thing you are given is only the provision of this life. But what God possesses is better and more lasting for those who believe and rely on their Lord.
Now whatever ye have been given is but a passing comfort for the life of the world, and that which Allah hath is better and more lasting for those who believe and put their trust in their Lord
And whatever ye are given it is but a provision of the life of this world; but what is with God is better and more lasting for those who believe and who upon their Lord rely
All that you receive is but for enjoyment in this life present: but better and more enduring is a portion with God, for those who believe and put their trust in their Lord
Whatever things are given you, they are the provision of this present life: But the reward which is with God is better, and more durable, for those who believe, and put their trust in their Lord

So be conscious of God as much as you can, and listen, and obey, and give for your own good. He who is protected from his stinginess-these are the prosperous.
So keep your duty to Allah as best ye can, and listen, and obey, and spend; that is better for your souls. And whoso is saved from his own greed, such are the successful
Then fear God as much as ye can! and hear, and obey, and expend in alms: it is better for yourselves. But whosoever is saved from his own covetousness - these are the prosperous
Fear God, then, with all your might, and hear and obey: and give alms for your own weal; for such as are saved from their own greed, shall prosper
Wherefore fear God, as much as ye are able; and hear, and obey: And give alms, for the good of your souls; for whoso is preserved from the covetousness of his own soul, they shall prosper

Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - pardon + overlook; forgive + overlook; let + them + forgive; let + them + pardon; pardon + forgive + merciful; overlook + offences; forgive + when + angry; pardon + reconciliation; forgiveth + injury. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 7 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried, rather than silently discarded: 2:286; 7:151; 23:109; 23:118; 58:2; 60:12; 73:20. The reason for each was not recorded.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.

A dashed outline marks a tag the editors handle with extra care. It describes how this study is filed and shown, not what the verses say.
