What does the Qur'an say about Joseph and his brothers?

Key findingsEditorial

One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.

  1. 01 12:3 We narrate unto thee the FAIREST OF STORIES in that We have inspired in thee this Qur'an, though aforetime thou wast of the heedless. In because the text calls this narrative the best of stories in its own words, and it is the only surah given over to a single continuous account.
  2. 02 12:8–10 When they said: verily Joseph and his brother are dearer to our father than we are, many though we be. Lo, our father is in plain aberration. KILL JOSEPH OR CAST HIM TO SOME OTHER LAND... One among them said: KILL NOT JOSEPH BUT, IF YE MUST BE DOING, FLING HIM INTO THE DEPTH OF THE PIT. In as ONE PASSAGE because the motive, the plan and the dissenting brother are three consecutive verses, and the dissent is what makes the story possible.
  3. 03 12:53 I DO NOT EXCULPATE MYSELF. LO, THE HUMAN SOUL ENJOINETH UNTO EVIL, save that whereon my Lord hath mercy. In because it is the most quoted line of the surah and one of the Qur'an's few statements about the self.
  4. 04 12:90–92 They said: is it indeed thou who art Joseph? He said: I am Joseph and this is my brother. God hath shown us favour. LO, HE WHO WARDETH OFF EVIL AND ENDURETH - LO, GOD LOSETH NOT THE WAGES OF THE KINDLY. They said: by God, verily God hath preferred thee above us, and we were indeed sinful. HE SAID: HAVE NO FEAR THIS DAY! MAY GOD FORGIVE YOU. In as ONE PASSAGE because the recognition, the confession and the pardon are three verses and the pardon is unconditional. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about forgiveness and pardoning?, with a different reason there.
  5. 05 12:55 He said: SET ME OVER THE STOREHOUSES OF THE LAND. Lo, I am a skilled custodian. In because it is the request for office. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about public office as a trust?, with a different reason there.
  6. 06 12:100–101 And he placed his parents on the dais and they fell down before him prostrate, and he said: O my father, this is the interpretation of my dream of old... AND HE HATH SHOWN ME KINDNESS, SINCE HE TOOK ME OUT OF THE PRISON AND HATH BROUGHT YOU FROM THE DESERT, AFTER SATAN HAD MADE STRIFE BETWEEN ME AND MY BRETHREN. In as ONE PASSAGE because Joseph's own summary attributes the whole thing to strife stirred between them - not to their malice - which is the most generous sentence in the story.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation

Written by the editors. Not a translation, and not a source. It is an editorial restatement of the verses in this study and carries their name because someone has to answer for it.

The Qur'an calls this THE FAIREST OF STORIES in its first lines (12:3), gives it a whole surah, and tells it as one continuous narrative - which it does nowhere else.

The brothers' motive is jealousy over a father's affection, stated plainly at 12:8. The plan is murder, and 12:10 records the brother who objected: KILL NOT JOSEPH, BUT FLING HIM INTO THE DEPTH OF THE PIT. The story turns on that dissent.

Two lines from the surah have become proverbial in their own right.

12:53: I DO NOT EXCULPATE MYSELF. LO, THE HUMAN SOUL ENJOINETH UNTO EVIL, save that whereon my Lord hath mercy. It is one of very few statements the Qur'an makes about the self as such.

12:92: HAVE NO FEAR THIS DAY. MAY GOD FORGIVE YOU. Spoken to men who threw him down a well, after they have confessed - and offered without conditions.

But the most generous line is 12:100, in Joseph's own summing up. He has every reason to name what his brothers did. Instead he says God brought them from the desert AFTER SATAN HAD MADE STRIFE BETWEEN ME AND MY BRETHREN. He attributes the rupture to something between them rather than to them.

12:55 is the other famous moment: SET ME OVER THE STOREHOUSES OF THE LAND - the only request for public office in the Qur'an.

The surah contains a great deal this study does not carry - the dream, the shirt, the wife of the Egyptian, the prison, the years of famine. The dreams are taken up by the study What does the Qur'an say about dreams - and Joseph's gift of reading them?, and 12:76 is carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about seeking knowledge?; the rest are not answered here.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

Scope of this study

This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.

What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.

What this rests on

Opens with 12:3, widening across 6 passages in all.

Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

The versesSource fact 6 passages, each with every cleared translation

6 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.

Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

Jis iš tiesų buvo geras man, kai ištraukė mane iš kalėjimo ir atvedė jus (visus čia) iš beduinų gyvenimo, po to, kai Šaitan (Šėtonas) pasėjo nesantaiką tarp manęs ir mano brolių. 12:100 Он возвёл своих родителей на трон, и они пали пред ним ниц. Он сказал: «О отец мой! Это — толкование моего давнего сна. Мой Господь действительно сделал его явью. Он облагодетельствовал меня, когда вывел меня из темницы и привёл вас из пустыни после того, как шайтан посеял раздор между мной и моими братьями. Воистину, мой Господь добр в том, что пожелает. What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 12:3, 12:8-10, 12:53, 12:90-92, 12:55, 12:100-101, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.

How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - cast + him + into + the + depth + of + the + pit; fairest + of + stories; have + no + fear + this + day; set + me + over + the + storehouses; i + do + not + exculpate + myself. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.

What was returned and not carried. 1 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 12:25 - the episode with the master's wife, a separate strand.

Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.

Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
