And recall that We said, "Enter this town, and eat plentifully from it whatever you wish; but enter the gate humbly, and say, 'Pardon.' We will forgive your sins, and give increase to the virtuous."
What does the Qur'an say about guilt and forgiving yourself?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 2:58 An instruction to enter saying forgiveness, with pardon promised in the same breath. In because the asking and the granting are one movement.
- 02 3:16 The words put in the mouths of those who ask - Lord, we believe, forgive us our sins. In because it is the set's plainest first-person asking.
- 03 3:31 Ties forgiveness to following, and says God will love you. In because it answers the question with a relation rather than a procedure.
- 04 3:89 Save those who repent after that and amend. In because it is the exception clause, and the study would misread the next verse without it.
- 05 3:90 The limit case: those who disbelieve after believing and grow in it, whose repentance shall not be accepted. In because a study about forgiveness that showed only the open door would be choosing.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
These verses put forgiveness within reach and keep it conditional, and the study shows both.
The asking is plain. Enter saying forgiveness, and pardon is promised in the same breath (2:58). Those who say Lord, we believe, forgive us our sins (3:16). And 3:31 answers with a relation rather than a procedure: follow, and God will love you and forgive your sins.
3:89 is the exception clause - save those who repent after that and amend - and it is in the study because the verse after it would be misread without it. 3:90 is the limit: those who disbelieve after believing and then grow in it, whose repentance shall not be accepted.
What the study does not do is tell a reader which of these describes them. These verses speak about repentance and about God's response to it; none of them is addressed to a person's feeling about themselves, and the question's phrase - forgiving yourself - is not language any of the four renderings uses.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 2:58, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 5 passages, each with every cleared translation
5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Adorned for the people is the love of desires, such as women, and children, and piles upon piles of gold and silver, and branded horses, and livestock, and fields. These are the conveniences of the worldly life, but with God lies the finest resort.
Beautified for mankind is love of the joys (that come) from women and offspring; and stored-up heaps of gold and silver, and horses branded (with their mark), and cattle and land. That is comfort of the life of the world. Allah! With Him is a more excellent abode
Seemly unto men is a life of lusts, of women, and children, and hoarded talents of gold and silver, and of horses well-bred, and cattle, and tilth;- that is the provision for the life of this world; but God, with Him is the best resort

As for those who disbelieve and die disbelievers, even the earth full of gold would not be accepted from any of them, were he to offer it for ransom. These will have a painful torment, and will have no saviors.

Verily, those who misbelieve and die in misbelief, there shall not be accepted from any one of them the earth-full of gold, though he should give it as a ransom. For them is grievous woe, and helpers have they none

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

You will not attain virtuous conduct until you give of what you cherish. Whatever you give away, God is aware of it.
Ye will not attain unto piety until ye spend of that which ye love. And whatsoever ye spend, Allah is Aware thereof
Ye cannot attain to righteousness until ye expend in alms of what ye love. But what ye expend in alms, that God knows
Ye shall never attain to goodness till ye give alms of that which ye love; and whatever ye give, of a truth God knoweth it
Ye will never attain unto righteousness, until ye give in alms of that which ye love: And whatever ye give, God knoweth it
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four translations that had cleared when this study was written - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 2:58, 3:16, 3:31, 3:89, 3:90, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.
The basis this restatement was written over. This study was signed on 5 September 2026, when four English renderings had cleared. Itani 2012 cleared on 7 September 2026, and five have cleared since. The verse selection, the reading and every finding here are the work done over those four; the divergence figures below are the live measure, computed over all five. Nothing here has been re-read against Itani, and no finding claims his agreement.
How this set was arrived at. Candidates came from a conjunctive word search over the four renderings then cleared, returned in mushaf order with no relevance ordering, and verses matched in all four of those were carried forward. Verses that matched the search on wording alone were proposed for removal and confirmed out: 2:279 - Matched on repent. It is the usury passage; repentance there means giving up interest, and the verse is about a debt, not about guilt. Why each verse is in the study is stated per verse in the selection, and is signed with this prose. THE PROBE TERMS WERE NOT RECORDED AT THE TIME AND CANNOT BE REPRODUCED, so that search has not been re-run over five and this restatement does not claim it was. The verse set is therefore exactly the set signed on 5 September 2026, unchanged: no verse was added and none was dropped.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. The derived divergence measure is computed over all five cleared renderings, Itani included, and is restated here so that this page and every verse page report the same measure. Across this set it runs from band 1 at 3:31 (0.30), where the five stand closest, to band 4 at 3:90 (0.65), where they stand furthest apart. The version signed when four translations were cleared gave band 1 at 3:31 (0.32) and band 4 at 3:90 (0.64); the two endpoint verses are unchanged, the figures are not. The study names the differences it turns on and does not choose between them.
