If you avoid the worst of what you are forbidden, We will remit your sins, and admit you by a Gate of Honor.
What is the difference between major and minor sins in the Qur'an?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 4:31 IF YE AVOID THE GREAT THINGS WHICH YE ARE FORBIDDEN, WE WILL REMIT FROM YOU YOUR EVIL DEEDS and make you enter at a noble gate. In because it is the verse the distinction rests on, and because the mechanism is conditional - avoiding the great remits the rest. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about good deeds wiping out bad ones?, with a different reason there.
- 02 53:32 Those who avoid ENORMITIES OF SIN AND ABOMINATIONS, SAVE THE UNWILLED OFFENCES - lo, thy Lord is of vast mercy. He is best aware of you when He created you from the earth, and when ye were hidden in the bellies of your mothers. THEREFORE ASCRIBE NOT PURITY UNTO YOURSELVES. In because it repeats the distinction, carves out unintended lapses, and then forbids the reader to use the distinction to congratulate themselves.
- 03 42:37 And those who SHUN THE WORST OF SINS AND INDECENCIES and, when they are wroth, forgive. In because it names the category again in a list of virtues. ALSO CARRIED by two studies, with different reasons there.
- 04 4:48 Lo, God forgiveth not that a partner should be ascribed unto Him. He forgiveth all save that to whom He will. In because it names the one thing that falls outside the whole scheme. DECLARED DUAL-PLACEMENT from the study What is the unforgivable sin (shirk) in the Qur'an? and the study Does God forgive all sins?
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The Qur'an makes the distinction three times, uses it to promise something, and then forbids the reader to draw a conclusion from it.
4:31 is the operative verse: IF YE AVOID THE GREAT THINGS WHICH YE ARE FORBIDDEN, WE WILL REMIT FROM YOU YOUR EVIL DEEDS. Two categories, and the second is remitted on condition of avoiding the first.
53:32 repeats it and adds two things. It carves out SAVE THE UNWILLED OFFENCES - the slips, the small unintended lapses. And then, having granted all that, it turns on the reader: THEREFORE ASCRIBE NOT PURITY UNTO YOURSELVES. HE IS BEST AWARE OF HIM WHO WARDETH OFF EVIL.
That last clause is why this study exists. The text offers a distinction that could easily become a way of grading oneself favourably, and closes that use of it in the same verse.
42:37 names the category once more, in a list of the qualities of the believers.
What the Qur'an never supplies is the LIST. It does not enumerate what counts as a great sin. 4:48 names one thing that is outside the scheme entirely - ascribing partners - and elsewhere killing, taking orphans' property, and false accusation are treated with great severity, but no verse gathers them into a numbered category.
Every list a reader will have met - the seven, the seventy - is the work of scholars reasoning from these verses and from . No hadith collection and no work of law has cleared the rights audit, so this study cannot report or assess them.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 4:31, widening across 4 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 4 passages, each with every cleared translation
4 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

O you who were given the Book! Believe in what We sent down, confirming what you have, before We obliterate faces and turn them inside out, or curse them as We cursed the Sabbath-breakers. The command of God is always done.
O ye unto whom the Scripture hath been given! Believe in what We have revealed confirming that which ye possess, before We destroy countenances so as to confound them, or curse them as We cursed the Sabbath-breakers (of old time). The commandment of Allah is always executed
O ye who have been given the Book! believe in what we have revealed, confirming what ye had before; ere we deface your faces and turn them into hinder parts, or curse you as we cursed the fellows of the Sabbath when God's command was done
O ye to whom the Scriptures have been given! believe in what we have sent down confirmatory of the Scripture which is in your hands, ere we efface your features, and twist your head round backward, or curse you as we cursed the sabbath-breakers: and the command of God was carried into effect
O ye to whom the scriptures have been given, believe in the revelation which we have sent down, confirming that which is with you; before we deface your countenances, and render them as the back parts thereof; or curse them, as we cursed those who transgressed on the sabbath day; and the command of God was fulfilled
4:48 — the verse above
أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى ٱلَّذِينَ يُزَكُّونَ أَنفُسَهُم بَلِ ٱللَّهُ يُزَكِّى مَن يَشَآءُ وَلَا يُظْلَمُونَ فَتِيلًا

Have you not considered those who claim purity for themselves? Rather, God purifies whom He wills, and they will not be wronged a whit.
Hast thou not seen those who praise themselves for purity? Nay, Allah purifieth whom He will, and they will not be wronged even the hair upon a date-stone
Do ye not see those who purify themselves? nay, God purifies whom He will, and they shall not be wronged a straw
Hast thou not marked those who hold themselves to be righteous? But God holdeth righteous whom He will; and they shall not be wronged the husk of a date stone
Hast thou not observed those who justify themselves? But God justifieth whomsoever He pleaseth, nor shall they be wronged a hair

The translators word this verse differently
See how they devise lies against God. That alone is an outright sin.
See, how they invent lies about Allah! That of itself is flagrant sin
Behold, how they devise against God a lie, and that is manifest sin enough
Behold how they devise a lie of God! Therein is wickedness manifest enough
Behold, how they imagine a lie against God; and therein is iniquity sufficiently manifest
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 4:31, 53:32, 42:37, 4:48, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - great + things + which + ye + are + forbidden; greater + sins; shun + the + great + sins; lesser + faults; save + the + unwilled + offences. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.

A dashed outline marks a tag the editors handle with extra care. It describes how this study is filed and shown, not what the verses say.
