And do not walk proudly on earth. You can neither pierce the earth, nor can you match the mountains in height.
Does the Qur'an say men's clothes must stay above the ankle?
In short
- The text says: those addressed are told not to walk proudly, or exultant, on the earth (17:37), nor with insolence, for God does not love the arrogant boaster (31:18); and clothing is sent down to cover shame and for adornment, but the garment of piety is best (7:26).
- The text does not say: anything about the length of a garment, or the ankles of men.
- The rest comes from: a report in which the Prophet is quoted as saying the part of the lower garment which hangs below the ankles is in the Fire is in Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 77: Dress (Bukhari 5787).

Where the renderings split
7:26, Itani: "But the clothing of piety-that is best"
7:26, Pickthall: "but the raiment of restraint from evil, that is best"
7:26, Palmer: "but the garment of piety, that is better"
7:26, Rodwell: "but the raiment of piety - this is best"
7:26, Sale: "but the cloathing of piety is better"
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The text speaks of pride in walking and of clothing, and does not measure a garment. At 17:37 Pickthall has "walk not in the earth exultant", and at 31:18 Itani has "God does not love the arrogant showoffs". At 7:26 the best garment is the garment of piety, in Palmer's words "the garment of piety, that is better".
No verse names the ankle in any garment. The ankles are named once in the text, in the washing before prayer. The rule many readers know comes from outside the Qur'an, from a report named above, with a link.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this rests on
Opens with 17:37, widening across 3 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 3 passages, each with every cleared translation
3 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.
CLEARED. Licence read verbatim from the block embedded in this very file. Ingested exactly as shipped: no normalisation, no stripping of marks, no Unicode recomposition.

Eehey mon yo ɓiɗɓe Aadam! Gooŋɗii min njippinii e mo'on comci cuhratɗi awraaji mon ɗin e cuɗaari. -Ko comci kulol ɗin noon ɓuri muƴƴude.- Ko ɗuum jeyaaɗum e Aayeeje Alla. mbeleejo'o, kamɓe ɓe mbaajitoto.
Yaa ilmaan Aadam! Nuti uffata qaama saalaa keessan haguuguufi (uffata) faayaa isin irratti buufnee jirra. Uffata sodaa Rabbii, saniitu caala. Kun mallattoowwan Rabbii irraayi; akka isaan yaadataniif (isaaniif himne).
Enyi wanadamu!

O Children of Adam! Do not let Satan seduce you, as he drove your parents out of the Garden, stripping them of their garments, to show them their nakedness. He sees you, him and his clan, from where you cannot see them. We have made the devils friends of those who do not believe.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it2 of the 2 paragraphs signed with this study
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
The question asks whether the Qur'an says men's clothes must stay above the ankle. The probe 'ankles?' returns 4 rows, all at 5:6, the washing before prayer, recorded as not carried. The probe 'trail\w*|train' finds no verse on a garment.
Pride is read in the study What does the Qur'an say about humility versus arrogance? This study names one report outside the Qur'an and does not grade it.
