We endowed Luqman with wisdom: "Give thanks to God." Whoever is appreciative-is appreciative for the benefit of his own soul. And whoever is unappreciative-God is Sufficient and Praiseworthy.
Who was Luqman, and what did he advise his son?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 31:12 And verily WE GAVE LUQMAN WISDOM, saying: GIVE THANKS UNTO GOD; and whosoever giveth thanks, he giveth thanks for his own soul. In because it is all the Qur'an says about who he was - a man given wisdom - and because the wisdom given is glossed immediately as gratitude.
- 02 31:13 And when Luqman said unto his son, when he was exhorting him: O MY DEAR SON, ASCRIBE NO PARTNERS UNTO GOD. LO, TO ASCRIBE PARTNERS IS A TREMENDOUS WRONG. In because it is the first item of the advice and the word used is wrong or injustice rather than sin. ALSO CARRIED by the study What is the unforgivable sin (shirk) in the Qur'an?, with a different reason there.
- 03 31:16 O my dear son, LO, THOUGH IT BE BUT THE WEIGHT OF A GRAIN OF MUSTARD-SEED, AND THOUGH IT BE IN A ROCK, OR IN THE HEAVENS, OR IN THE EARTH, GOD WILL BRING IT FORTH. Lo, God is Subtile, Aware. In because it is the most vivid image in the advice and it is about the reach of accounting rather than about conduct.
- 04 31:17 O my dear son, ESTABLISH WORSHIP AND ENJOIN KINDNESS AND FORBID INIQUITY, AND PERSEVERE WHATEVER MAY BEFALL THEE. Lo, that is of the steadfast heart of things. In because it is the active half of the advice and it ends with an instruction to endure the consequences of it.
- 05 31:18–19 TURN NOT THY CHEEK IN SCORN TOWARD FOLK, NOR WALK WITH PERTNESS IN THE LAND. Lo, God loveth not each braggart boaster. BE MODEST IN THY BEARING AND SUBDUE THY VOICE. LO, THE HARSHEST OF ALL VOICES IS THE VOICE OF THE ASS. In as ONE PASSAGE because the two verses are one instruction about bearing, and because the final comparison is the bluntest sentence in the passage. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about humility versus arrogance?, with a different reason there.
- 06 31:14–15 And We have enjoined upon man concerning his parents - his mother beareth him in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years - GIVE THANKS UNTO ME AND UNTO THY PARENTS. But if they strive with thee to make thee ascribe unto Me as partner that of which thou hast no knowledge, then obey them not, YET CONSORT WITH THEM IN THE WORLD KINDLY. In as ONE PASSAGE because the text interrupts Luqman's advice to insert its own about parents, and because the exception and the kindness clause are one sentence. ALSO CARRIED by the study What is the unforgivable sin (shirk) in the Qur'an? and two studies, with different reasons there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The Qur'an says two things about who Luqman was: that God GAVE HIM WISDOM, and that he spoke to his son. It does not say he was a prophet, does not give his people, and does not date him. A surah is named after him on the strength of one speech.
The advice runs to six verses and it is unusually well organised.
It begins with the largest thing (31:13): ASCRIBE NO PARTNERS UNTO GOD - and calls it a TREMENDOUS WRONG, using the vocabulary of injustice rather than of sin.
Then the reach of accounting (31:16), in the image everyone remembers: though it be the weight of a MUSTARD SEED, and though it be hidden IN A ROCK, or in the heavens, or in the earth, GOD WILL BRING IT FORTH.
Then the active duties (31:17): establish worship, enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong - AND PERSEVERE WHATEVER MAY BEFALL THEE. The last clause anticipates that doing the third will cost him something.
And then, unexpectedly, bearing and manner (31:18-19): do not turn your cheek away from people in scorn, do not strut, be modest in your walk, LOWER YOUR VOICE - and the comparison that ends it, which no reader forgets: THE HARSHEST OF ALL VOICES IS THE VOICE OF THE ASS.
Between 31:13 and 31:16 the text interrupts him. 31:14-15 is God's own instruction about parents, inserted into a father's speech to his son: give thanks to Me AND TO THY PARENTS - and if they press you toward ascribing partners, do not obey them, but keep company with them kindly.
The advice moves from doctrine to accounting to action to how a man carries himself in the street.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 31:12, widening across 6 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

6 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

And verily We gave Luqman wisdom, saying: Give thanks unto Allah; and whosoever giveth thanks, he giveth thanks for (the good of) his soul. And whosoever refuseth - Lo! Allah is Absolute, Owner of Praise
We did give unto Loqman wisdom, saying, 'Thank God; for he who thanks God is only thankful for his own soul; and he who is ungrateful - verily, God is independent, worthy of praise
Of old we bestowed wisdom upon LOKMAN, and taught him thus - "Be thankful to God: for whoever is thankful, is thankful to his own behoof; and if any shall be thankless . . . God truly is self-sufficient, worthy of all praise
We heretofore bestowed wisdom on Lokman, and commanded him, saying, be thou thankful unto God: For whoever is thankful, shall be thankful to the advantage of his own soul; and if any shall be unthankful, verily God is self-sufficient, and worthy to be praised

Dhugumatti Luqmaaniif ogummaa kenninee jirra.“Rabbiif galata galchi. Namni (Rabbiin) galateeffate kan inni galateeffatu matuma isaatiifi; Namni kafares (matuma isaa irratti) Rabbiin dureessa, faarfamaadha” (jechuun). [3]
Andolsun, biz Lokman’a “Allah’a şükret!” diye hikmet verdik. Kim şükrederse, ancak kendisi için şükretmiş olur. Kim de nankörlük ederse, bilsin ki Allah her bakımdan zengindir, övülmeye layıktır.

We endowed Luqman with wisdom: "Give thanks to God." Whoever is appreciative-is appreciative for the benefit of his own soul. And whoever is unappreciative-God is Sufficient and Praiseworthy.

“Yavrum! Namazı dosdoğru kıl. İyiliği emret. Kötülükten alıkoy. Başına gelen musibetlere karşı sabırlı ol. Çünkü bunlar kesin olarak emredilmiş işlerdendir.”

And when it is said to them, "Follow what God has revealed," they say, "Rather, we follow what we found our parents devoted to." Even if Satan is calling them to the suffering of the Blaze?
And if it be said unto them: Follow that which Allah hath revealed, they say: Nay, but we follow that wherein we found our fathers. What! Even though the devil were inviting them unto the doom of flame
And when it is said to them, 'Follow what God has sent down;' they say, 'Nay! we will follow what we found our fathers agreed upon;' - what! though Satan calls them to the torment of the blaze
And when it is said to them, Follow ye what God hath sent down, they say, "Nay; that religion in which we found our fathers will we follow." What! though Satan bid them to the torment of the flame
And when it is said unto them, follow that which God hath revealed; they answer, nay, we will follow that which we found our fathers to practise. What, though the devil invite them to the torment of hell

The translators word this verse differently
O my son, observe the prayer, advocate righteousness, forbid evil, and be patient over what has befallen you. These are of the most honorable traits.
O my dear son! Establish worship and enjoin kindness and forbid iniquity, and persevere whatever may befall thee. Lo! that is of the steadfast heart of things
O my son! be steadfast in prayer, and bid what is reasonable and forbid what is wrong; be patient of what befalls thee, verily, that is one of the determined affairs
O my son! observe prayer, and enjoin the right and forbid the wrong, and be patient under whatever shall betide thee: for this is a bounden duty
O my son, be constant at prayer, and command that which is just, and forbid that which is evil: And be patient under the afflictions which shall befall thee; for this is a duty absolutely incumbent on all men
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 31:12, 31:13, 31:16, 31:17, 31:18-19, 31:14-15, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - luqman; o + my + dear + son; be + modest + in + thy + bearing; subdue + thy + voice. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 2 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 12:5 - Jacob to Joseph - the same form of address, a different speaker; 37:102 - carried by Whom did Abraham nearly sacrifice in the Qur'an - and is the son named?
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.

A dashed outline marks a tag the editors handle with extra care. It describes how this study is filed and shown, not what the verses say.
