The servants of the Merciful are those who walk the earth in humility, and when the ignorant address them, they say, "Peace."
What does the Qur'an say about humility versus arrogance?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 25:63 The slaves of the Beneficent are they who walk upon the earth modestly, and when the foolish address them, answer: Peace. In because humility is given a gait and a reply, not a feeling.
- 02 17:37 Walk not in the earth exultant; thou canst not rend the earth nor stretch to the height of the hills. In because the argument against arrogance is physical scale, and the verse makes it almost comic.
- 03 31:18 Turn not thy cheek in scorn toward folk, nor walk with pertness in the land; God loveth not each braggart boaster. In because it names the two gestures - the turned face and the strut - and attaches the divine response.
- 04 57:23 That ye grieve not for what has escaped you, nor exult because of what has been given; God loveth not the prideful boasters. In because it ties arrogance to gain and grief to loss, and treats both as the same error.
- 05 4:36 ... and God loveth not such as are proud and boastful. In because the clause closes the longest list of duties to other people in the text, so arrogance is set as the thing that undoes them. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about caring for the poor and the orphan?, What does the Qur'an say about neighbours? and What does the Qur'an say about the treatment of parents?, each with its own reason.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Five verses, and what is notable is how physical they are.
Humility in these verses is a way of walking. 25:63: those who walk upon the earth modestly. 17:37: walk not in the earth exultant. 31:18: nor walk with pertness. The word the translators reach for is a gait, not an attitude.
17:37 makes an argument the others do not. Do not strut - because you cannot split the earth open and you cannot reach the height of the mountains. The reason offered against arrogance is not that it is unkind but that it is inaccurate.
31:18 adds the other gesture: turn not thy cheek in scorn toward folk. Between them the two verses describe a face and a walk.
57:23 widens it in a way worth noticing. It sets exulting over what you were given beside grieving over what you lost, and treats them as one disorder rather than two - which is the closest thing here to a general account of arrogance.
4:36 places the clause at the end of the longest list of obligations to other people anywhere in these renderings: parents, kin, orphans, the needy, near neighbour, distant neighbour, the companion at your side, the wayfarer, those your right hands possess - and then, God loves not the proud and boastful. The placement is the point.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 25:63, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 5 passages, each with every cleared translation
5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, as God has given some of them an advantage over others, and because they spend out of their wealth. The good women are obedient, guarding what God would have them guard. As for those from whom you fear disloyalty, admonish them, and abandon them in their beds, then strike them. But if they obey you, seek no way against them. God is Sublime, Great.
Men are in charge of women, because Allah hath made the one of them to excel the other, and because they spend of their property (for the support of women). So good women are the obedient, guarding in secret that which Allah hath guarded. As for those from whom ye fear rebellion, admonish them and banish them to beds apart, and scourge them. Then if they obey you, seek not a way against them. Lo! Allah is ever High, Exalted, Great
Men stand superior to women in that God hath preferred some of them over others, and in that they expend of their wealth: and the virtuous women, devoted, careful (in their husbands') absence, as God has cared for them. But those whose perverseness ye fear, admonish them and remove them into bed-chambers and beat them; but if they submit to you, then do not seek a way against them; verily, God is high and great
Men are superior to women on account of the qualities with which God hath gifted the one above the other, and on account of the outlay they make from their substance for them. Virtuous women are obedient, careful, during the husband's absence, because God hath of them been careful. But chide those for whose refractoriness ye have cause to fear; remove them into beds apart, and scourage them: but if they are obedient to you, then seek not occasion against them: verily, God is High, Great
Men shall have the pre-eminence above women, because of those advantages wherein God hath caused the one of them to excel the other, and for that which they expend of their substance in maintaining their wives. The honest women are obedient, careful in the absence of their husbands, for that God preserveth them, by committing them to the care and protection of the men. But those, whose perverseness ye shall be apprehensive of, rebuke; and remove them into separate apartments, and chastise them. But if they shall be obedient unto you, seek not an occasion of quarrel against them; for God is high and great

If you fear a breach between the two, appoint an arbiter from his family and an arbiter from her family. If they wish to reconcile, God will bring them together. God is Knowledgeable, Expert.
And if ye fear a breach between them twain (the man and wife), appoint an arbiter from his folk and an arbiter from her folk. If they desire amendment Allah will make them of one mind. Lo! Allah is ever Knower, Aware
And if ye fear a breach between the two, then send a judge from his people and a judge from her people. If they wish for reconciliation, God will arrange between them; verily, God is knowing and aware
And if ye fear a breach between man and wife, then send a judge chosen from his family, and a judge chosen from her family: if they are desirous of agreement, God will effect a reconciliation between them; verily, God is knowing, apprised of all
And if ye fear a breach between the husband and wife, send a judge out of his family, and a judge out of her family: If they shall desire a reconciliation, God will cause them to agree; for God is knowing and wise

Those who are stingy, and exhort people to stinginess, and conceal what God has given them from His bounty. We have prepared for the disbelievers a disgraceful punishment.

who are miserly and bid men be miserly too, and who hide what God has given them of His grace;- but we have prepared for the misbelievers shameful woe
Who are niggardly themselves, and bid others be niggards, and hide away what God of his bounty hath given them. We have made ready a shameful chastisement for the unbelievers

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 25:63, 17:37, 31:18, 57:23, 4:36, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - walk + earth + insolence; walk + earth + exultingly; walk + earth + haughtily; walk + earth + proudly; walk + humbly; walk + earth + lowly; loveth + not + arrogant; loves + not + proud; arrogant + boaster; proud + boaster. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
