O you who believe! Protect yourselves and your families from a Fire, whose fuel is people and stones. Over it are angels, fierce and powerful. They never disobey God in anything He commands them, and they carry out whatever they are commanded.
What does the Qur'an say about raising children?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 66:6 O ye who believe, WARD OFF FROM YOURSELVES AND YOUR FAMILIES A FIRE whereof the fuel is men and stones, over which are set angels stern and strong. In because it is the only verse making a parent responsible for the household's standing, and because it names the self first.
- 02 20:132 AND ENJOIN UPON THY PEOPLE WORSHIP, AND BE CONSTANT THEREIN. WE ASK NOT OF THEE A PROVISION: WE PROVIDE FOR THEE. And the sequel is for righteousness. In because the instruction to enjoin is immediately followed by a removal of the anxiety that usually accompanies it - the provision is not the parent's to secure.
- 03 31:17–19 O my dear son, ESTABLISH WORSHIP AND ENJOIN KINDNESS AND FORBID INIQUITY, AND PERSEVERE WHATEVER MAY BEFALL THEE... AND TURN NOT THY CHEEK IN SCORN TOWARD FOLK, NOR WALK WITH PERTNESS IN THE LAND... BE MODEST IN THY BEARING AND SUBDUE THY VOICE. In as ONE PASSAGE because it is the only extended parental instruction in the Qur'an and it moves from worship to conduct to bearing. ALSO CARRIED by the study Who was Luqman, and what did he advise his son?, with a different reason there.
- 04 17:31 SLAY NOT YOUR CHILDREN, FEARING A FALL TO POVERTY. WE SHALL PROVIDE FOR THEM AND FOR YOU. Lo, the slaying of them is great sin. In because it is the floor beneath everything else in this study, and because it addresses the fear rather than the act. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about the killing of infant girls? and What does the Qur'an say about the rights of children on their parents?, with different reasons there.
- 05 6:151 Say: come, I will recite unto you that which your Lord hath made a sacred duty for you: that ye ascribe nothing as partner unto Him, AND THAT YE DO GOOD TO PARENTS, AND THAT YE SLAY NOT YOUR CHILDREN BECAUSE OF PENURY - WE PROVIDE FOR YOU AND FOR THEM. In because it puts the duty to parents and the prohibition on killing children in one list, which is the two directions of the same relationship. ALSO CARRIED by several earlier studies, with different reasons there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The Qur'an says very little about child-rearing as such, and what it says arranges itself into three levels.
The floor is survival. 17:31 and 6:151 both prohibit killing children out of poverty, and both answer the FEAR rather than the act: WE SHALL PROVIDE FOR THEM AND FOR YOU. The reasoning is addressed to the calculation a frightened parent is making.
The middle is responsibility. 66:6: WARD OFF FROM YOURSELVES AND YOUR FAMILIES A FIRE. It is the only verse extending a parent's duty to the household's standing, and it names the self first - the order is not accidental.
20:132 gives the same instruction with the anxiety removed: ENJOIN UPON THY PEOPLE WORSHIP, AND BE CONSTANT THEREIN - and then, immediately, WE ASK NOT OF THEE A PROVISION: WE PROVIDE FOR THEE. A parent is told to teach and told not to carry the burden of providing.
The top is content, and for that the Qur'an gives one worked example: Luqman's advice at 31:13-19, of which this page renders the part its verse set carries. It moves from the largest thing - ascribe no partners - through the reach of accounting, to active duties, and then to something no reader expects in a passage of religious instruction: how to walk, how to hold your face, and how loud to speak.
That the one extended parental speech in the Qur'an ends with LOWER YOUR VOICE is worth a reader's attention.
What is absent is everything a modern parent might look for: nothing about schooling, discipline, play, or affection expressed. The material on those is , and no hadith collection has cleared the rights audit.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 66:6, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

If you repent to God, then your hearts have listened. But if you band together against him, then God is his Ally, as is Gabriel, and the righteous believers. In addition, the angels will assist him.
If ye twain turn unto Allah repentant, (ye have cause to do so) for your hearts desired (the ban); and if ye aid one another against him (Muhammad) then lo! Allah, even He, is his Protecting Friend, and Gabriel and the righteous among the believers; and furthermore the angels are his helpers
If ye both turn repentant unto God, - for your hearts have swerved! - but if ye back each other up against him,- verily, God, He is the sovereign; and Gabriel and the righteous of the believers, and the angels after that, will back him up
If ye both be turned to God in penitence, for now have your hearts gone astray . . . . but if ye conspire against the Prophet, then know that God is his Protector, and Gabriel, and every just man among the faithful; and the angels are his helpers besides
If ye both be turned unto God -- for your hearts have swerved -- it is well: But if ye join against him, verily God is his patron; and Gabriel, and the good man among the faithful, and the angels also are his assistants

Διάταξε την οικογένειά σου να τελούν την προσευχή, και να είσαι σταθερός με υπομονή κατά την τέλεσή της (τηρώντας τους πυλώνες και τους κανόνες της). So bear patiently what they say, and celebrate the praises of your Lord before the rising of the sun, and before its setting. And during the hours of the night glorify Him, and at the borders of the day, that you may be satisfied.
Therefor (O Muhammad), bear with what they say, and celebrate the praise of thy Lord ere the rising of the sun and ere the going down thereof. And glorify Him some hours of the night and at the two ends of the day, that thou mayst find acceptance
Bear patiently then what they say, and celebrate the praises of thy Lord before the rising of the sun, and before its setting, and at times in the night celebrate them; and at the ends of the day; haply thou mayest please (Him)
Put up then with what they say; and celebrate the praise of thy Lord before the sunrise, and before its setting; and some time in the night do thou praise him, and in the extremes of the day, that thou haply mayest please Him
Wherefore do thou, O Mohammed, patiently bear that which they say; and celebrate the praise of thy Lord before the rising of the sun, and before the setting thereof, and praise him in the hours of the night, and in the extremities of the day, that thou mayest be well pleased with the prospect of receiving favour from God

And do not extend your glance towards what We have given some classes of them to enjoy-the splendor of the life of this world-that We may test them thereby. Your Lord's provision is better, and more lasting.
And strain not thine eyes toward that which We cause some wedded pairs among them to enjoy, the flower of the life of the world, that We may try them thereby. The provision of thy Lord is better and more lasting
And do not strain after what we have provided a few of them with - the flourish of the life of this world, to try them by; but the provision of thy Lord is better and more lasting
And strain not thine eye after what We have bestowed on divers of them - the braveries of this world - that we may thereby prove them. The portion which thy Lord will give, is better and more lasting
And cast not thine eyes on that which we have granted divers of the unbelievers to enjoy, namely, the splendor of this present life, that we may prove them thereby: For the provision of thy Lord is better, and more permanent

Had We destroyed them with a punishment before him, they would have said, "Our Lord, if only You had sent us a messenger, we would have followed Your revelations before we were humiliated and disgraced."
And if we had destroyed them with some punishment before it, they would assuredly have said: Our Lord! If only Thou hadst sent unto us a messenger, so that we might have followed Thy revelations before we were (thus) humbled and disgraced
But had we destroyed them with torment before it, they would have said, 'Unless Thou hadst sent to us an apostle, that we might follow Thy signs before we were abased and put to shame

31:18 İnsanlara yüzünü çevirme ve yeryüzünde böbürlenerek yürüme. Çünkü Allah kendini beğenip böbürlenen hiçbir kimseyi sevmez.
31:19 Yürüyüşünde orta bir yol tut, sesini kıs! Çünkü seslerin en çirkini eşeklerin sesidir.

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

Say, "Produce your witnesses who would testify that God has prohibited this." If they testify, do not testify with them. And do not follow the whims of those who deny Our revelation, and those who do not believe in the Hereafter, and those who equate others with their Lord.

And do not come near the property of the orphan, except with the best intentions, until he reaches maturity. And give full weight and full measure, equitably. We do not burden any soul beyond its capacity. And when you speak, be fair, even if it concerns a close relative. And fulfill your covenant with God. All this He has enjoined upon you, so that you may take heed.
And approach not the wealth of the orphan save with that which is better, till he reach maturity. Give full measure and full weight, in justice. We task not any soul beyond its scope. And if ye give your word, do justice thereunto, even though it be (against) a kinsman; and fulfil the covenant of Allah. This He commandeth you that haply ye may remember
And draw not nigh unto the wealth of the orphan, save so as to better it, until he reaches full age; and give weight and measure with justice. We do not compel the soul save what it can compass; and when ye pronounce, then be just, though it be in the case of a relative
And come not nigh to the substance of the orphan, but to improve it, until he come of age: and use a full measure, and a just balance: We will not task a soul beyond its ability. And when ye give judgment, observe justice, even though it be the affair of a kinsman, and fulfil the covenant of God. This hath God enjoined you for your monition
And meddle not with the substance of the orphan, otherwise than for the improving thereof, until he attain his age of strength; and use a full measure, and a just balance. We will not impose a task on any soul, beyond its ability. And when ye pronounce judgement observe justice, although it be for or against one who is near of kin, and fulfill the covenant of God. This hath God commanded you, that ye may be admonished

This is My path, straight, so follow it. And do not follow the other paths, lest they divert you from His path. All this He has enjoined upon you, that you may refrain from wrongdoing.
And (He commandeth you, saying): This is My straight path, so follow it. Follow not other ways, lest ye be parted from His way. This hath He ordained for you, that ye may ward off (evil)
And God's compact fulfill ye; that is what He ordained you, haply ye may be mindful. Verily, this is my right way; follow it then, and follow not various paths, to separate yourselves from His way; that is what He has ordained you, haply ye may fear
And, "this is my right way." Follow it then; and follow not other paths lest ye be scattered from His path. This hath he enjoined you, that ye may fear Him
and that ye may know that this is my right way: Therefore follow it, and follow not the paths of others, lest ye be scattered from the path of God. This hath He commanded you that ye may take heed

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 66:6, 20:132, 31:17-19, 17:31, 6:151, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - o + my + dear + son + establish + worship; ward + off + from + yourselves + and + your + families + a + fire; enjoin + upon + thy + people + worship; slay + not + your + children; command + thy + people + to + worship. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
