And they ask you about menstruation: say, "It is harmful, so keep away from women during menstruation. And do not approach them until they have become pure. Once they have become pure, approach them in the way God has directed you." God loves the repentant, and He loves those who keep clean."
What does the Qur'an say about God loving those who repent?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 2:222 They question thee concerning menstruation... TRULY GOD LOVETH THOSE WHO TURN UNTO HIM, AND LOVETH THOSE WHO HAVE A CARE FOR CLEANNESS. In because it is the ONLY verse in the Qur'an that says God loves the repentant, and because of where it sits - the clause closes a passage about menstruation and ritual purity, which is not where a reader would look for it.
- 02 3:31 Say: if ye love God, follow me; GOD WILL LOVE YOU and forgive you your sins. God is Forgiving, Merciful. In because it is the other verse joining God's love to the forgiving of sins, and the sequence there is following, then love, then forgiveness. DECLARED DUAL-PLACEMENT from the study What does the Qur'an say about following the Prophet's example?
- 03 3:133–134 And vie one with another for forgiveness from your Lord, and for a paradise... those who spend in ease and in adversity, those who control their wrath and are forgiving toward mankind; AND GOD LOVETH THE GOOD. In as ONE PASSAGE because the love is attached to conduct that includes pardoning others. DECLARED DUAL-PLACEMENT from three studies.
- 04 9:108 IN IT ARE MEN WHO LOVE TO PURIFY THEMSELVES. GOD LOVETH THE PURIFIERS. In because it repeats 2:222's second clause about cleanness in a different setting, which shows the pairing is not accidental.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
One verse says it, and where it says it is the most interesting thing about it.
2:222 is a ruling about menstruation - a passage about ritual purity and marital relations. Its closing clause is: TRULY GOD LOVETH THOSE WHO TURN UNTO HIM, AND LOVETH THOSE WHO HAVE A CARE FOR CLEANNESS.
That is the only place in the Qur'an where God is said to love the repentant. It occurs at the end of a verse about bodily purity, and it pairs turning back to God with keeping clean, in one sentence.
The pairing is not a one-off. 9:108 repeats the second half in a completely different setting - a mosque - and uses the same construction: GOD LOVETH THE PURIFIERS. Whatever the connection is between repentance and cleanness, the text makes it twice.
Three further verses are carried as declared dual-placements rather than as search results, because the study would be thin and misleading without them.
3:31 gives the only other statement joining God's love to forgiveness of sins, and its order is worth noting: IF YE LOVE GOD, FOLLOW ME; GOD WILL LOVE YOU AND FORGIVE YOU YOUR SINS. Human love first, then divine love, then forgiveness.
3:134 attaches the love to conduct - and the conduct includes pardoning other people, which makes it the mirror of this study's question.
What the Qur'an says far more often is that God ACCEPTS repentance - which What does the Qur'an say about God accepting repentance again and again? carries. It says He LOVES the repentant once, in a verse about washing.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 2:222, widening across 4 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

They question thee (O Muhammad) concerning menstruation. Say: It is an illness, so let women alone at such times and go not in unto them till they are cleansed. And when they have purified themselves, then go in unto them as Allah hath enjoined upon you. Truly Allah loveth those who turn unto Him, and loveth those who have a care for cleanness
They will ask thee about menstruation: say, 'It is a hurt.' So keep apart from women in their menstruation, and go not near them till they be cleansed; but when they are cleansed come in to them by where God has ordered you verily, God loves those who turn to Him, and those who keep themselves clean
They will also question thee as to the courses of women. SAY: They are a pollution. Separate yourselves therefore from women and approach them not, until they be cleansed. But when they are cleansed, go in unto them as God hath ordained for you. Verily God loveth those who turn to Him, and loveth those who seek to be clean
They will ask thee also, concerning the courses of women: Answer, they are a pollution: Therefore separate your selves from women in their courses, and go not near them, until they be cleansed. But when they are cleansed, go in unto them as God hath commanded you, for God loveth those who repent, and loveth those who are clean

And those who, when they do an evil thing or wrong themselves, remember Allah and implore forgiveness for their sins - Who forgiveth sins save Allah only? - and will not knowingly repeat (the wrong) they did
Those who when they do a crime, or wrong themselves, remember God, and ask forgiveness for their sins,- and who forgives sins save God?- and do not persevere in what they did, the while they know
They who, after they have done a base deed or committed a wrong against their own selves, remember God and implore forgiveness of their sins - and who will forgive sins but God only? - and persevere not in what they have wittingly done amiss
And who, after they have committed a crime, or dealt unjustly with their own souls, remember God, and ask pardon for their sins, -- for who forgiveth sins except God? -- and persevere not in what they have done knowingly

The reward of such will be forgiveness from their Lord, and Gardens underneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide for ever - a bountiful reward for workers
these have their reward:- pardon from their Lord, and gardens beneath which rivers flow, dwelling therein for aye; for pleasant is the hire of those who act like this
As for these! Pardon from their Lord shall be their recompense, and gardens 'neath which the rivers flow; for ever shall they abide therein: And goodly the reward of those who labour

Do not stand in it, ever. A mosque founded upon piety from the first day is worthier of your standing in it. In it are men who love to be purified. God loves those who purify themselves.

Never stand (to pray) there. A place of worship which was found upon duty (to Allah) from the first day is more worthy that thou shouldst stand (to pray) therein, wherein are men who love to purify themselves. Allah loveth the purifiers
Never stand up therein!- there is a mosque founded on piety from the first day: it is more right that thou shouldst stand therein;- therein are men who love to be clean; for God doth love the clean
Never set thou foot in it. There is a Mosque founded from its first day in piety. More worthy is it that thou enter therein: therein are men who aspire to purity, and God loveth the purified
Stand not up to pray therein for ever. There is a temple founded on piety, from the first day of its building. It is more just that thou stand up to pray therein: Therein are men who love to be purified; for God loveth the clean

Humo wamo wanaume wanaopenda kujitakasa. Na Mwenyezi Mungu anawapenda wanaojitakasa.
Be aldrig i den! En moské som grundades på gudsfruktan från första dagen är mer värd att du där förrättar din bön. I den finns män som älskar att rena sig, och Gud älskar de som renar sig.
O mescidde asla (namaza) durma! İlk günden beri takva üzerine bina edilen mescidde (Kuba Mescidi'nde namaza) durman çok daha uygundur. Orada (madden ve mânen) temizlenip, arınmayı arzulayan adamlar vardır. Allah, temizlenip arınanları sever.

The translators word this verse differently
Then there are those who establish a mosque to cause harm, and disbelief, and disunity among the believers, and as an outpost for those who fight God and His Messenger. They will swear: "Our intentions are nothing but good." But God bears witness that they are liars.
And as for those who chose a place of worship out of opposition and disbelief, and in order to cause dissent among the believers, and as an outpost for those who warred against Allah and His messenger aforetime, they will surely swear: We purposed naught save good. Allah beareth witness that they verily are liars
And there are those who have taken to a mosque for mischief, and for misbelief, and to make a breach amongst the believers, and for an ambush for him who made war against God and His Apostle before; they surely swear, 'We only wished for what was good;' but God bears witness that they are liars
There are some who have built a Mosque for mischief and for infidelity, and to disunite the faithful, and in expectation of him who, in time past, warred against God and His Apostle. They will surely swear, "Our aim was only good:" but God is witness that they are liars
There are some who have built a temple to hurt the faithful, and to propagate infidelity, and to foment division among the true believers, and for a lurking place for him who hath fought against God and his apostle in time past; and they swear, saying, verily we intended no other than to do for the best: But God is witness that they do certainly lie

Is he who founds his structure upon piety and acceptance from God better, or he who founds his structure on the brink of a cliff that is about to tumble, so it tumbles with him into the Fire of Hell? God does not guide the unjust people.

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 2:222, 3:31, 3:133-134, 9:108, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - god + loveth + those + who + turn + unto + him; loveth + the + repentant; loveth + those + who + have + a + care + for + cleanness; loveth + those + who + purify + themselves. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
