You have an excellent example in the Messenger of God; for anyone who seeks God and the Last Day, and remembers God frequently.
What does the Qur'an say about following the Prophet's example?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 33:21 VERILY IN THE MESSENGER OF GOD YE HAVE A GOOD EXAMPLE FOR HIM WHO LOOKETH UNTO GOD AND THE LAST DAY, and remembereth God much. In because it is the only verse in the Qur'an that says this of Muhammad, and because it is conditional - a good example FOR the person who has a particular orientation.
- 02 60:4 THERE IS A GOODLY PATTERN FOR YOU IN ABRAHAM AND THOSE WITH HIM, when they told their folk: lo, we are guiltless of you and all that ye worship beside God. We have done with you. And there hath arisen between us and you hostility and hate for ever until ye believe in God only - SAVE THAT WHICH ABRAHAM PROMISED HIS FATHER: I WILL ASK FORGIVENESS FOR THEE. In as ONE PASSAGE because the identical phrase is used of Abraham, and because the verse explicitly carves out one part of his conduct as NOT the pattern.
- 03 60:6 Verily ye have in them a goodly pattern for everyone who looketh to God and the Last Day. In because it repeats the formula and its condition, confirming that the phrase is not reserved to Muhammad.
- 04 3:31 Say: IF YE LOVE GOD, FOLLOW ME; GOD WILL LOVE YOU and forgive you your sins. In because it is the only verse that makes following him the route to something, and the something is being loved.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
One verse says this of Muhammad, and two say the same thing of Abraham. That distribution is the finding.
33:21: VERILY IN THE MESSENGER OF GOD YE HAVE A GOOD EXAMPLE. It is the sole occurrence of the phrase about him, and its setting is a military siege. It is also conditional - a good example FOR HIM WHO LOOKS TO GOD AND THE LAST DAY AND REMEMBERS GOD MUCH. The example is offered to a particular kind of person rather than asserted universally.
60:4 and 60:6 use the identical expression of ABRAHAM AND THOSE WITH HIM. And 60:4 does something no reader should miss: having named them a goodly pattern, it CARVES OUT AN EXCEPTION. The pattern holds - SAVE THAT WHICH ABRAHAM PROMISED HIS FATHER: I WILL ASK FORGIVENESS FOR THEE. One element of the exemplar's conduct is expressly excluded from what is to be imitated.
That is worth sitting with. The Qur'an uses the phrase good example three times, and on one of those occasions it immediately limits what falls under it.
3:31 is the practical verse: IF YE LOVE GOD, FOLLOW ME; GOD WILL LOVE YOU. Following is presented as the demonstration of a claim to love, and the promise attached is reciprocal love rather than reward.
What the Qur'an does not do is specify the content. It does not say what following consists of, and it records no description of his daily practice. That material is the sunna, transmitted in , and no hadith collection has cleared the rights audit. The obligation to obey him is a separate matter and is carried by What does the Qur'an say about obeying the Prophet?
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 33:21, widening across 4 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 4 passages, each with every cleared translation

Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Being stingy towards you. And when fear approaches, you see them staring at you-their eyes rolling-like someone fainting at death. Then, when panic is over, they whip you with sharp tongues. They resent you any good. These have never believed, so God has nullified their works; a matter easy for God.
Being sparing of their help to you (believers). But when the fear cometh, then thou (Muhammad) seest them regarding thee with rolling eyes like one who fainteth unto death. Then, when the fear departeth, they scald you with sharp tongues in their greed for wealth (from the spoil). Such have not believed. Therefor Allah maketh their deeds fruitless. And that is easy for Allah

When fear comes thou wilt see them looking towards thee, their eyes rolling like one fainting with death; but when the fear has passed away they will assail you with sharp tongues, covetous of the best. These have never believed, and God will make vain their works, for that is easy with God
It is out of covetousness in your regard: for when an alarm cometh, thou mayest see them look to thee, and roll their eyes like him on whom the shadows of death have fallen! Yet, when the alarm is passed, with sharp tongues will they assail you, covetous of the best of the spoil. No faith have these! God will make their doings of no avail! And easy is this with God

These believe not sincerely; wherefore God hath rendered their works of no avail; and this is easy with God

Dio nostro, ci affidiamo a Te e a Te ci rivolgiamo e a Te torneremo.”

Rabbimiz! Sana dayandık, sana yöneldik ve dönüş sanadır."

Whenever they encounter you, they treat you as enemies, and they stretch their hands and tongues against you with malice. They wish that you would disbelieve.

Ye had a good example in Abraham and those with him, when they said to their people, 'Verily, we are clear of you and of what ye serve beside God. We disbelieve in you: and between us and you is enmity and hatred begun for ever, until ye believe in God alone!' But not the speech of Abraham to his father, 'Verily, I will ask forgiveness for thee, though I cannot control aught from God!' O our Lord! on thee do we rely! and unto thee we turn! and unto thee the journey is
A good example had ye in Abraham, and in those who followed him, when they said to their people, "Verily, we are clear of you, and of what ye worship beside God: we renounce you: and between us and hath hatred and enmity sprung up for ever, until ye believe in God alone." Yet imitate not the language of Abraham to his Father, "I will pray for thy forgiveness, but not aught shall I obtain for thee from God." O our Lord! in thee do we trust! to thee do we turn! to thee we shall come back at the last
Ye have an excellent pattern in Abraham, and those who were with him, when they said unto their people, verily we are clear of you, and of the idols which ye worship, besides God: We have renounced you; and enmity and hatred is begun between us and you for ever, until ye believe in God alone: Except Abraham's saying unto his father, verily I will beg pardon for thee; but I cannot obtain ought of God in thy behalf. O Lord, in thee do we trust, and unto thee are we turned; and before thee shall we be assembled hereafter

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 33:21, 60:4, 60:6, 3:31, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - goodly + pattern; excellent + example; fair + example; if + ye + love + god + follow + me. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
