The Jews say, "God's hand is tied." It is their hands that are tied, and they are cursed for what they say. In fact, His hands are outstretched; He gives as He wills. Certainly, what was revealed to your from your Lord will increase many of them in defiance and blasphemy. And We placed between them enmity and hatred, until the Day of Resurrection. Whenever they kindle the fire of war, God extinguishes it. And they strive to spread corruption on earth. God does not love the corrupters.
Are God's 'hand' and 'face' in the Qur'an literal or figurative?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 5:64 The Jews say: God's hand is FETTERED. Their hands are fettered and they are accursed for saying so. Nay, but BOTH HIS HANDS ARE SPREAD OUT WIDE in bounty. In because it is the sharpest instance: a metaphor is rejected with another use of the same word, which shows the text using hand figuratively while defending it.
- 02 48:10 Those who swear allegiance unto thee swear allegiance only unto God. THE HAND OF GOD IS ABOVE THEIR HANDS. In because it is the most concrete use, in a scene where actual hands are being clasped.
- 03 39:67 They esteem not God as He hath the right to be esteemed, when the whole earth is HIS HANDFUL on the Day of Resurrection, and the heavens are ROLLED IN HIS RIGHT HAND. Glorified is He and High Exalted above all they associate. In because the verse ends by declaring Him above all comparison in the same breath as the image, which is the whole problem in one sentence.
- 04 55:26–27 Everyone that is thereon will pass away; there remaineth but the COUNTENANCE of thy Lord of Might and Glory. In as ONE PASSAGE because the passing away and the remaining are one statement.
- 05 28:88 Everything will perish SAVE HIS COUNTENANCE. His is the command, and unto Him ye will be brought back. In because it is the other verse making the same claim, and because 'countenance' here is doing the work of 'Himself'.
- 06 30:38 Give to the kinsman his due, and to the needy, and to the wayfarer. That is best for those who SEEK GOD'S COUNTENANCE. In because it shows the same word used of human intention - seeking the Face - where nobody proposes a literal reading.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Six verses, and the text itself supplies the evidence on both sides - which is why this is genuinely disputed and why this study does not settle it.
Start with what makes the literal reading hard from inside the text. 5:64 is a rebuke of people who said God's hand is FETTERED. The reply is not that God has no hand; it is that BOTH HIS HANDS ARE SPREAD WIDE. A metaphor about stinginess is answered with a metaphor about generosity, in the same vocabulary. Whatever hand means there, it is being used the way the accusation used it.
30:38 and 18:28 use FACE of human intention - those who seek God's Countenance - and nobody has ever proposed that a person giving alms is looking for a physical face. The same word, in the same book, plainly means the thing itself or the favour of it.
Now what makes the figurative reading harder than it looks. 48:10 is set in a real scene, with real hands being clasped in allegiance, and says THE HAND OF GOD IS ABOVE THEIR HANDS. And 39:67 gives an image of extraordinary physical concreteness - the earth a handful, the heavens rolled up in the right hand - and then, in the same verse, declares God EXALTED ABOVE ALL THEY ASSOCIATE WITH HIM. The text puts the image and the denial of likeness in one sentence, and does not explain how they sit together.
55:26-27 and 28:88 do something different again. Everything perishes SAVE HIS COUNTENANCE. Read literally, that says a part of God survives, which no party to this argument accepts; so even the most literal readers take the word here to mean His very Self.
That is the honest position: the text uses these words, uses some of them unmistakably figuratively, and refuses, in 42:11 - rendered in full by the study Does the Qur'an describe a physical God seated on a throne?, not on this page - to allow any likeness at all. The study Does the Qur'an describe a physical God seated on a throne? carries 42:11 and 3:7 and reaches the same impasse from the throne verses. Settling it means quoting the theologians who argued it for centuries, and no work of kalam and no has cleared the rights audit.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 5:64, widening across 6 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

The Jews say: Allah's hand is fettered. Their hands are fettered and they are accursed for saying so. Nay, but both His hands are spread out wide in bounty. He bestoweth as He will. That which hath been revealed unto thee from thy Lord is certain to increase the contumacy and disbelief of many of them, and We have cast among them enmity and hatred till the Day of Resurrection. As often as they light a fire for war, Allah extinguisheth it. Their effort is for corruption in the land, and Allah loveth not corrupters
The Jews say, - 'God's hand is fettered;' their hands are fettered and they are cursed for what they said; nay! His hands are outspread, He expends how He pleases! and that which has been sent down to thee from thy Lord will surely increase many of them in their rebellion and misbelief, for we have cast amongst them enmity and hatred till the resurrection day. Whenever they light a fire for war, God puts it out; they strive for corruption in the earth, but God loves not the corrupt
The hand of God," say the Jews, "is chained up." Their own hands shall be chained up - and for that which they have said shall they be cursed. Nay! outstretched are both His hands! At His own pleasure does He bestow gifts. That which hath been sent down to thee from thy Lord will surely increase the rebellion and unbelief of many of them; and we have put enmity and hatred between them that shall last till the day of the Resurrection. Oft as they kindle a beacon fire for war shall God quench it! and their aim will be to abet disorder on the earth: but God loveth not the abettors of disorder
The Jews say, the hand of God is tied up. Their hands shall be tied up, and they shall be cursed for that which they have said. Nay, his hands are both stretched forth; He bestoweth as He pleaseth: That which hath been sent down unto thee from thy Lord shall increase the transgression and infidelity of many of them; and we have put enmity and hatred between them, until the day of resurrection. So often as they shall kindle a fire for war, God shall extinguish it; and they shall set their minds to act corruptly in the earth, but God loveth not the corrupt doers

Had the People of the Scriputure believed and been righteous, We would have remitted their sins, and admitted them into the Gardens of Bliss.
If only the People of the Scripture would believe and ward off (evil), surely We should remit their sins from them and surely We should bring them into Gardens of Delight
But did the people of the Book believe and fear, we would cover their offences, and we would make them enter into gardens of pleasure
But if the people of the Book believe and have the fear of God, we will surely put away their sins from them, and will bring them into gardens of delight
More, if they who have received the scriptures believe, and fear God, We will surely expiate their sins from them, and We will lead them into gardens of pleasure

Had they observed the Torah, and the Gospel, and what was revealed to them from their Lord, they would have consumed amply from above them, and from beneath their feet. Among them is a moderate community, but evil is what many of them are doing.
If they had observed the Torah and the Gospel and that which was revealed unto them from their Lord, they would surely have been nourished from above them and from beneath their feet. Among them there are people who are moderate, but many of them are of evil conduct
and were they steadfast in the law and the gospel, and what has been sent down to them from their Lord, they should eat from above them and below them. Amongst them are a nation who are moderate, but many of them - bad is what they do
and if that they observe the law and the Evangel, and what hath been sent down to them from their Lord, they shall surely have their fill of good things from above them and from beneath their feet. Some there are among them who act aright; but many of them - how evil are their doings
and if they observe the law, and the gospel, and the other scriptures which have been sent down unto them from their Lord, they shall surely eat of good things both from above them, and from under their feet. Among them there are people who act uprightly; but how evil is that which many of them do work

The translators word this verse differently
Those who pledge allegiance to you are pledging allegiance to God. The hand of God is over their hands. Whoever breaks his pledge breaks it to his own loss. And whoever fulfills his covenant with God, He will grant him a great reward.

Lo! those who swear allegiance unto thee (Muhammad), swear allegiance only unto Allah. The Hand of Allah is above their hands. So whosoever breaketh his oath, breaketh it only to his soul's hurt; while whosoever keepeth his covenant with Allah, on him will He bestow immense reward
Verily, those who swear allegiance to thee do but swear allegiance to God;- God's hand is above their hands and whoso perjures himself does but perjure himself against himself; but he who fulfils what he has covenanted with God, God shall bring him mighty hire
In truth, they who plighted fealty to thee, really plighted that fealty to God: the hand of God was over their hands! Whoever, therefore, shall break his oath shall only break it to his own hurt; but whoever shall be true to his engagement with God, He will give him a great reward
Verily they who swear fealty unto thee, swear fealty unto God: The hand of God is over their hands. Whoever shall violate his oath, will violate the same to the hurt only of his own soul: But whoever shall perform that which he hath covenanted with God, He will surely give him a great reward

It was revealed to you, and to those before you, that if you idolize, your works will be in vain, and you will be of the losers.
And verily it hath been revealed unto thee as unto those before thee (saying): If thou ascribe a partner to Allah thy work will fail and thou indeed wilt be among the losers
When He has inspired thee and those before thee that, "If thou dost associate aught with Him, thy work will surely be in vain, and thou shalt surely be of those who lose
But now hath it been revealed to thee and to those who flourished before thee, - "Verily, if thou join partners with God, vain shall be all thy work, and thyself shalt be of those who perish
Since it hath been spoken by revelation unto thee, and also unto the prophets who have been before thee, saying, verily if thou join any partners with God, thy work will be altogether unprofitable, and thou shalt certainly be one of those who perish

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

When We give people a taste of mercy, they rejoice in it. But when adversity befalls them, because of what their hands have perpetrated, they begin to despair.

Do they not see that God expands the provision for whomever He wills, or restricts it? Surely in this are signs for people who believe.
See they not that Allah enlargeth the provision for whom He will, and straiteneth (it for whom He will). Lo! herein indeed are portents for folk who believe
Have they not seen that God extends provision to whom He pleases, or doles it out? verily, in that are signs unto a people who believe
See they not that God bestoweth full supplies on whom He pleaseth and giveth sparingly to whom He pleaseth? Signs truly are there herein to those who believe
Do they not see that God bestoweth provision abundantly on whom He pleaseth, and is sparing unto whom He pleaseth? Verily herein are signs unto people who believe

The usury you practice, seeking thereby to multiply people's wealth, will not multiply with God. But what you give in charity, desiring God's approval-these are the multipliers.
That which ye give in usury in order that it may increase on (other) people's property hath no increase with Allah; but that which ye give in charity, seeking Allah's Countenance, hath increase manifold
And what ye put out to usury that it may increase with the wealth of men, it shall not increase with God; but what ye put out in alms, desiring the face of God - these it is who shall gain double
Whatever ye put out at usury to increase it with the substance of others shall have no increase from God: but whatever ye shall give in alms, as seeking the face of God, shall be doubled to you
Whatever ye shall give in usury, to be an increase of men's substance, shall not be increased by the blessing of God: But whatever ye shall give in alms, for God's sake, they shall receive a twofold reward

God is He who created you, then provides for you, then makes you die, then brings you back to life. Can any of your idols do any of that? Glorified is He, and Exalted above what they associate.
Allah is He Who created you and then sustained you, then causeth you to die, then giveth life to you again. Is there any of your (so-called) partners (of Allah) that doeth aught of that? Praised and Exalted be He above what they associate (with Him)
It is God who created you and then provided for you; and then will make you die, and then will quicken you again; is there any of your partners who can do aught of that? Celebrated be His praises, and exalted be He above what they associate with Him
It is God who created you - then fed you - then will cause you to die - then will make you alive. Is there any of your companion-gods who can do aught of these things? Praise be to Him! and far be He exalted above the gods they join with Him
It is God who hath created you, and hath provided food for you: Hereafter will He cause you to die; and after that will He raise you again to life. Is there any of your false gods, who is able to do the least of these things? Praise be unto Him; and far be He removed from what they associate with Him
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 5:64, 48:10, 39:67, 55:26-27, 28:88, 30:38, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - hand + god + above; hands + fettered; both + hands + outspread; face + thy + lord + remain; everything + perish + save + face; seek + face; hand + over + their + hands. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 4 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 16:71 - human hands; 18:28 - near-identical to 30:38, which is kept; 24:40 - a man's hand in the darkness parable; 33:50 - the idiom for ownership, human.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
