Your Lord is God; He who created the heavens and the earth in six days, then established Himself on the Throne. The night overtakes the day, as it pursues it persistently; and the sun, and the moon, and the stars are subservient by His command. His is the creation, and His is the command. Blessed is God, Lord of all beings.
Does the Qur'an describe a physical God seated on a throne?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 7:54 Your Lord is God Who created the heavens and the earth in six Days, then mounted He the Throne. In because it is the fullest of the throne verses and it places the mounting after the creating, in a sequence. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about creation in 'six days'? and What does the Qur'an say about night and day 'wrapping' each other?, each with its own reason.
- 02 20:5 The Beneficent One, Who is established on the Throne. In because it is the bare form of the same statement, with no surrounding narrative to soften or explain it.
- 03 42:11 The Creator of the heavens and the earth ... naught is as His likeness; and He is the Hearer, the Seer. In because it is the flat denial of resemblance, in the same book as the throne verses, and because the second half attributes hearing and seeing in the same breath.
- 04 3:7 He it is Who hath revealed the Scripture wherein are clear revelations - they are the substance of the Book - and others which are allegorical; but those in whose hearts is doubt pursue the allegorical. In because it is the text's own statement that some of its verses are not to be read the way the clear ones are, and it is the verse every side in this argument appeals to.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The Qur'an says both things, and it says them plainly.
It says God mounted or is established upon the Throne (7:54, 20:5). And it says naught is as His likeness (42:11). Any answer that reports only one of those is not reporting the text.
What 42:11 does is more than deny a body. It denies LIKENESS as such - nothing whatever resembles Him - and then, in the same verse, calls Him the Hearer and the Seer. So the verse that most firmly rules out physical resemblance also attributes faculties we only know in physical form. That is not a slip in the text; it is the shape of the problem.
3:7 is the verse the argument is actually conducted over. It says some verses are clear and are the substance of the Book, and others are allegorical, and it warns against pursuing the allegorical. It does not say WHICH are which. Every party to this dispute has claimed 3:7 - one side reading the throne verses as the allegorical ones to be referred back to 42:11, the other reading 42:11 as the clear statement and affirming the throne language without asking how.
That is the historical shape of the disagreement, and it is a real one within the tradition, not a controversy manufactured from outside it. This study can name it and cannot adjudicate it, because adjudicating it means quoting the theologians who argued it out - and no work of kalam and no has cleared the rights audit.
What can be said without a commentator: the reader who asks whether the Qur'an describes a physical God seated on a throne should be shown 20:5 AND 42:11 together, and told that the text asserts the throne and denies the likeness, and does not, in its own words, explain how both hold.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 7:54, widening across 4 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

Lo! your Lord is Allah Who created the heavens and the earth in six Days, then mounted He the Throne. Blessed be God the Lord of the Worlds
Verily your Lord is God, who created the heavens and the earth in six days; and then ascended his throne: He causeth the night to cover the day; it succeedeth the same swiftly: He also created the sun and the moon, and the stars, which are absolutly subject unto his command. Are they waiting for anything but its fulfillment? The Day its fulfillment comes true, those who disregarded it before will say, "The messengers of our Lord did come with the truth. Have we any intercessors to intercede for us? Or, could we be sent back, to behave differently from the way we behaved before?" They ruined their souls, and what they used to invent has failed them.
Await they aught save the fulfilment thereof? On the day when the fulfilment thereof cometh, those who were before forgetful thereof will say: The messengers of our Lord did bring the Truth! Do they wait for any other than the interpretation thereof? He prescribed for you the same religion He enjoined upon Noah, and what We inspired to you, and what We enjoined upon Abraham, and Moses, and Jesus: "You shall uphold the religion, and be not divided therein." As for the idolaters, what you call them to is outrageous to them. God chooses to Himself whom He wills, and He guides to Himself whoever repents.
He hath ordained for you that religion which He commended unto Noah, and that which We inspire in thee (Muhammad), and that which We commended unto Abraham and Moses and Jesus, saying: Establish the religion, and be not divided therein. Dreadful for the idolaters is that unto which thou callest them. Allah chooseth for Himself whom He will, and guideth unto Himself him who turneth (toward Him)
He has enjoined upon you for religion what He prescribed to Noah and what we inspired thee with, and what we inspired Abraham and Moses and Jesus,- to be steadfast in religion, and not to part into sects therein - a great thing to the idolaters is that which ye call them to! He hath ordained you the religion which He commanded Noah, and which We have revealed unto thee, O Mohammed, and which We commanded Abraham, and Moses, and Jesus: Saying, observe this religion, and be not divided therein. It is He who revealed to you the Book. Some of its verses are definitive; they are the foundation of the Book, and others are unspecific. As for those in whose hearts is deviation, they follow the unspecific part, seeking descent, and seeking to derive an interpretation.

Yeye ndiye aliyeteremsha juu yako Kitabu hiki.

Our Lord! Cause not our hearts to stray after Thou hast guided us, and bestow upon us mercy from Thy Presence. Lo! Thou, only Thou, art the Bestower
O Lord! pervert not our hearts again when Thou hast guided them, and grant us mercy from Thee, for Thou art He who grants
O our Lord! suffer not our hearts to go astray after that thou hast once guided us, and give us mercy from before thee; for verily thou art He who giveth

O Lord! Thou shalt gather together men unto the day wherein is no doubt. Verily, God will not depart from His promise
O our Lord! For the day of whose coming there is not a doubt, thou wilt surely gather mankind together. Verily, God will not fail the promise
O Lord, thou shalt surely gather mankind together, unto a day of resurrection: There is no doubt of it, for God will not be contrary to the promise
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 7:54, 20:5, 42:11, 3:7, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verse set was chosen by the Editor before the study was written, and is NOT a search result. No word search was run, because on this question a word search would have found the wrong verses or missed the point of the passage.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
