AALAMIN Read the Qur'an in context

Does the Qur'an allow Hajj during a period?

In short

  • The text says: the Hajj and the visit, or Umrah, are to be carried out for God, with provision for one who is prevented or sick (2:196); there are to be no sexual relations, misconduct or quarrelling during the Hajj (2:197); Abraham is told to purify or cleanse the House for those who go round it, stand, bow and prostrate (22:26); and the pilgrims are to go round the ancient House (22:29).
  • The text does not say: anything about a woman's period during the pilgrimage.
  • The rest comes from: a report in which Aisha, whose period began on the way to the Hajj, was told to do all that the pilgrims do except going round the Ka'ba until she was clean is in Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 6: Menstrual Periods (Bukhari 305).

Where the renderings split

22:26, Itani: "purify My House for those who circle around"

22:26, Pickthall: "purify My House for those who make the round"

22:26, Palmer: "cleanse my House for those who make the circuits"

22:26, Rodwell: "cleanse My House for those who go in procession round it"

22:26, Sale: "cleanse my house for those who compass it"

Key findingsEditorial

One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.

  1. 01 2:196 The Hajj and the visit, or Umrah, are to be carried out for God; the verse names those who are prevented or sick
  2. 02 2:197 What is set aside during the Hajj: relations with women, misconduct, quarrelling
  3. 03 22:26 The House to be purified, or cleansed, for those who go round it
  4. 04 22:29 The pilgrims go round the ancient House
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation

Written by the editors. Not a translation, and not a source. It is an editorial restatement of the verses in this study and carries their name because someone has to answer for it.

The pilgrimage verses name who may be excused or eased - the one prevented, the one sick, the one with an ailment of the head at 2:196 - and they name what is set aside during it at 2:197. They do not name the period.

The House is to be purified or cleansed for those who go round it: at 22:26 Pickthall has "purify My House for those who make the round". The verse speaks of the House and those who worship there; it does not speak of a woman's period.

The rule many readers know - that a woman in her period does every rite but going round the House - comes from outside the Qur'an, from a report of Aisha named above, with a link.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

Scope of this study

This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.

What this rests on

Opens with 2:196, widening across 4 passages in all.

Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

The versesSource fact 4 passages, each with every cleared translation

4 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.

Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Talal Itani published 2012

And carry out the Hajj and the Umrah for God. But if you are prevented, then whatever is feasible of offerings. And do not shave your heads until the offering has reached its destination. Whoever of you is sick, or has an injury of the head, then redemption of fasting, or charity, or worship. When you are secure: whoever continues the Umrah until the Hajj, then whatever is feasible of offering. But if he lacks the means, then fasting for three days during the Hajj and seven when you have returned, making ten in all. This is for he whose household is not present at the Sacred Mosque. And remain conscious of God, and know that God is stern in retribution.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall published 1930

Perform the pilgrimage and the visit (to Makka) for Allah. And if ye are prevented, then send such gifts as can be obtained with ease, and shave not your heads until the gifts have reached their destination. And whoever among you is sick or hath an ailment of the head must pay a ransom of fasting or almsgiving or offering. And if ye are in safety, then whosoever contenteth himself with the visit for the pilgrimage (shall give) such gifts as can be had with ease. And whosoever cannot find (such gifts), then a fast of three days while on the pilgrimage, and of seven when ye have returned; that is, ten in all. That is for him whoso folk are not present at the Inviolable Place of Worship. Observe your duty to Allah, and know that Allah is severe in punishment

Edward Henry Palmer published 1880

And fulfil the pilgrimage and the visitation to God; but if ye be besieged, then what is easiest for you by way of gift. But shave not your heads until your gift shall reach its destination; and he amongst you who is sick or has a hurt upon his head, then the redemption is by fasting or by alms or by an offering. But when ye are safe again, then let him who would enjoy the visitation until the pilgrimage (bring) what is easiest as a gift. And he who cannot find (anything to bring), then let him fast three days on the pilgrimage and seven when ye return; these make ten days complete. That is, for him whose family are not present in the Sacred Mosque; and fear God and know that God is keen to punish

John Medows Rodwell published 1861

Accomplish the Pilgrimage and the Visitation of the holy places in honour of God: and if ye be hemmed in by foes, send whatever offering shall be the easiest: and shave not your heads until the offering reach the place of sacrifice. But whoever among you is sick, or hath an ailment of the head, must satisfy by fasting, or alms, or an offering. And when ye are safe from foes, he who contents himself with the Visitation of the holy places, until the Pilgrimage, shall bring whatever offering shall be the easiest. But he who findeth nothing to offer, shall fast three days in the Pilgrimage itself, and seven days when ye return: they shall be ten days in all. This is binding on him whose family shall not be present at the sacred Mosque. And fear God, and know that God is terrible in punishing

George Sale published 1734

Perform the pilgrimage of Mecca, and the visitation of God: And if ye be besieged, send that offering which shall be the easiest; and shave not your heads, until your offering reacheth the place of sacrifice. But whoever among you is sick, or is troubled with any distemper of the head, must redeem the shaving his head by fasting, or alms, or some offering. When ye are secure from enemies, he who tarrieth in the visitation of the temple of Mecca until the pilgrimage, shall bring that offering which shall be the easiest. But he who findeth not any thing to offer, shall fast three days in the pilgrimage, and seven when ye are returned: They shall be ten days complete. This is incumbent on him, whose family shall not be present at the holy temple. And fear God and know that God is severe in punishing

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none.

Talal Itani2012 And carry out the Hajj and the Umrah for God.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 Perform the pilgrimage and the visit (to Makka) for Allah.

Edward Henry Palmer1880 And fulfil the pilgrimage and the visitation to God; but if ye be besieged, then what is easiest for you by way of gift.

John Medows Rodwell1861 Accomplish the Pilgrimage and the Visitation of the holy places in honour of God: and if ye be hemmed in by foes, send whatever offering shall be the easiest: and shave not your heads until the offering reach the place of sacrifice.

George Sale1734 Perform the pilgrimage of Mecca, and the visitation of God: And if ye be besieged, send that offering which shall be the easiest; and shave not your heads, until your offering reacheth the place of sacrifice.

Talal Itani2012 You commit no error by seeking bounty from your Lord. When you disperse from Arafat, remember God at the Sacred Landmark. And remember Him as He has guided you. Although, before that, you were of those astray.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 It is no sin for you that ye seek the bounty of your Lord (by trading). But, when ye press on in the multitude from 'Arafat, remember Allah by the sacred monument. Remember Him as He hath guided you, although before ye were of those astray

Edward Henry Palmer1880 It is no crime to you that ye seek good from your Lord; but when ye pour forth from 'Arafat, remember God by the sacred beacon. Remember Him how He guided you, although ye were surely before of those who err

John Medows Rodwell1861 It shall be no crime in you if ye seek an increase from your Lord; and when ye pour swiftly on from Arafat, then remember God near the holy monument; and remember Him, because He hath guided you who before this were of those who went astray

George Sale1734 It shall be no crime in you, if ye seek an increase from your Lord, by trading during the pilgrimage. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it2 of the 2 paragraphs signed with this study

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.

The question asks whether the Qur'an allows the Hajj during a period. The probe 'menstruat\w*|courses|menses' finds the period at 2:222, 2:228 and 65:4 only, and those of the three outside this study's set are recorded as not carried; none speaks of the pilgrimage.

The command to make the pilgrimage is read in the study What does the Qur'an command about the pilgrimage (Hajj)?, and the visit in What does the Qur'an say about the lesser pilgrimage (Umrah)? This study names one report outside the Qur'an and does not grade it.
