"O my people, enter the Holy Land which God has assigned for you, and do not turn back, lest you return as losers."
Does the Qur'an assign the Holy Land to the Children of Israel (5:21)?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 5:21 The verse the question rests on. Moses speaks to his people: Itani has "enter the Holy Land which God has assigned for you", Pickthall has "which Allah hath ordained for you", and Rodwell has "which God hath destined for you".
- 02 5:24 The people's answer. Pickthall has "We will never enter (the land) while they are in it".
- 03 5:26 What follows the refusal. Rodwell has "Verily the land shall be forbidden them forty years".
- 04 7:128 Moses' words on whose the earth is. Pickthall has "the earth is Allah's. He giveth it for an inheritance to whom He will".
- 05 7:137 The verse on the land given after Pharaoh. Pickthall has "the fair word of thy Lord was fulfilled for the Children of Israel because of their endurance".
- 06 17:104 A word to the Children of Israel after Pharaoh. Itani has "Inhabit the land", and all five go on to the promise of the Hereafter.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Yes, at 5:21 the five print the land as given to Moses' people by God. Itani has "the Holy Land which God has assigned for you". Palmer has "which God has prescribed for you", and Sale has "which God hath decreed you". The verse is spoken by Moses to his people, and it comes with a warning not to turn back.
The account goes on. At 5:24 the people refuse; Sale has "we will never enter the land, while they remain therein". At 5:26 Itani has "It is forbidden for them for forty years".
At 7:128 Moses speaks of the earth as God's to give. Itani has "He gives it in inheritance to whomever He wills of His servants, and the future belongs to the righteous".
At 7:137 the five print the land given to a people once held weak, as the fulfilling of a word to the Children of Israel. Itani and Pickthall have "because of their endurance". At 17:104 Pickthall has "Dwell in the land".
So the text prints a land assigned to Moses' people at 5:21, forbidden to them for forty years after their refusal at 5:26, and at 7:137 it prints, in Pickthall's words, a word to the Children of Israel fulfilled "because of their endurance". At 7:128 it ties the giving of land to God's will and to the righteous. None of these verses names borders.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this rests on
Opens with 5:21, widening across 6 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

Two men of those who feared, but whom God had blessed, said, "Go at them by the gate; and when you have entered it, you will prevail. And put your trust in God, if you are believers."
Then out spake two of those who feared (their Lord, men) unto whom Allah had been gracious: Enter in upon them by the gate, for if ye enter by it, lo! ye will be victorious. So put your trust (in Allah) if ye are indeed believers
Then said two men of those who fear, - God had been gracious to them both, - 'Enter ye upon them by the door, and when ye have entered it, verily, ye shall be victorious; and upon God do ye rely if ye be believers
Then said two men of those who feared their Lord and to whom God had been gracious, "Enter in upon them by the gate: and when ye enter it, ye overcome! If ye be believers, put ye your trust in God
And two men of those who feared God, unto whom God had been gracious, said, enter ye upon them suddenly by the gate of the city; and when ye shall have entered the same, ye shall surely be victorious: Therefore trust in God, if ye are true believers

The chiefs of Pharaoh's people said, "Will you let Moses and his people cause trouble in the land, and forsake you and your gods?" He said, "We will kill their sons, and spare their women. We have absolute power over them."
The chiefs of Pharaoh's people said: (O King), wilt thou suffer Moses and his people to make mischief in the land, and flout thee and thy gods? He said: We will slay their sons and spare their women, for lo! we are in power over them
And the chiefs of Pharaoh's people said, 'Will ye leave Moses and his people, to do evil in the land, and to leave thee and thy gods?' Said he, 'We will have their sons slain and their women we will let live, for, verily, we are triumphant over them
Then said the chiefs of Pharaoh's people - "Wilt thou let Moses and his people go to spread disorders in our land, and desert thee and thy gods?" He said, "We will cause their male children to be slain and preserve their females alive: and verily we shall be masters over them
And the chiefs of pharaoh's people said, 'Wilt thou leave Moses and his people to create disorder in the land and forsake thee and thy gods?' He answered, 'We will ruthlessly slay their sons and let their women live. And surely we are dominant over them

With the truth We sent it down, and with the truth it descended. We sent you only as a bearer of good news and a warner.

The translators word this verse differently
A Quran which We unfolded gradually, that you may recite to the people over time. And We revealed it in stages.
And (it is) a Qur'an that We have divided, that thou mayst recite it unto mankind at intervals, and We have revealed it by (successive) revelation
And a Qur'an which we have divided, that thou mayst read it to mankind leisurely, and we sent it down, sending it down
And we have parcelled out the Koran into sections, that thou mightest recite it unto men by slow degrees, and we have sent it down piecemeal
And We have divided the Koran, revealing it by parcels, that thou mightest read it unto men with deliberation; and We have sent it down, causing it to descend as occasion required
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it1 of the 1 paragraphs signed with this study
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
A probe for 'holy land', 'holy earth' or 'sacred land' returns 5 lines at one verse, 5:21: that phrase is printed nowhere else in the five. 5:24 and 5:26 are here because they are the people's answer to 5:21 and what follows it. A probe for 'inherit', 'inheritors' or 'heritage' returns 84 lines at 33 verses; 7:128 and 7:137 are carried from it because they speak of the land and the Children of Israel in the account of Moses. 17:104 is here because it is a word to the Children of Israel about the land. This study shows what the five print in these verses. It does not map the land, and it does not speak to any later history, which is outside the text.
