Permission is given to those who are fought against, and God is Able to give them victory.
What does the Qur'an say about protecting churches, synagogues and monasteries?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 22:39–40 Sanction is given unto those who fight because they have been wronged... those who have been driven from their homes unjustly only because they said: our Lord is God. FOR HAD IT NOT BEEN FOR GOD'S REPELLING SOME MEN BY MEANS OF OTHERS, CLOISTERS AND CHURCHES AND ORATORIES AND MOSQUES, WHEREIN THE NAME OF GOD IS OFT MENTIONED, WOULD ASSUREDLY HAVE BEEN PULLED DOWN. In as ONE PASSAGE because the permission to fight in 22:39 and the purpose in 22:40 are one sentence, and because the list names three non-Muslim buildings BEFORE it names mosques. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about self-defence versus aggression?, with a different reason there.
- 02 2:114 And WHO DOTH GREATER WRONG THAN HE WHO FORBIDDETH THE APPROACH TO THE SANCTUARIES OF GOD LEST HIS NAME SHOULD BE MENTIONED THEREIN, AND STRIVETH FOR THEIR RUIN? In because it makes obstructing worship and ruining a place of worship the greatest wrong, and the term used is general - sanctuaries of God, not mosques.
- 03 9:17–18 It is not for the idolaters to tend God's sanctuaries... He only shall tend God's sanctuaries who believeth in God and the Last Day and observeth proper worship. In as ONE PASSAGE because it sets a condition on who maintains a sanctuary, and it must be shown beside 22:40 rather than instead of it.
- 04 24:36–37 IN HOUSES WHICH GOD HATH ALLOWED TO BE EXALTED AND THAT HIS NAME SHALL BE REMEMBERED THEREIN, therein do offer praise to Him at morn and evening - men whom neither merchandise nor sale beguileth from remembrance of God. In as ONE PASSAGE because it describes what such a house is for, and its criterion is remembrance rather than affiliation. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about the heart finding rest in remembrance?, with a different reason there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
One verse carries the list, and it is one of the most remarkable sentences in the Qur'an.
22:40 gives the purpose of the permission to fight granted in 22:39. Had God not repelled some people by means of others, it says, there would have been PULLED DOWN - and then the list - CLOISTERS AND CHURCHES AND ORATORIES AND MOSQUES, WHEREIN THE NAME OF GOD IS OFT MENTIONED.
Three things a reader should notice.
The list has four items and the mosque is LAST. Monastic cells, churches, synagogues - the four translators divide over which building the third term names - and then mosques. Whatever else the verse is doing, it is not describing only Muslim buildings.
The qualifier applies to all of them together: WHEREIN THE NAME OF GOD IS OFT MENTIONED. The protection attaches to the function, not the affiliation.
And the context is the very first permission to fight in the Qur'an. The justification offered for taking up arms includes preventing the destruction of other religions' places of worship.
2:114 states the principle generally and in the strongest terms available: WHO DOTH GREATER WRONG than the one who bars God's sanctuaries so His name may not be mentioned there, and works for their ruin?
9:17-18 must be shown too, because it does place a condition on who TENDS a sanctuary. The two verses are about different acts - maintaining versus destroying - and this study does not merge them.
24:36-37 supplies the criterion: houses where God's name is remembered, and the people in them are people whom trade does not distract.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 22:39–40, widening across 4 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 4 passages, each with every cleared translation
4 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Those who have been driven forth from their homes wrongfully, only because they say "Our Lord is the God." And if God had not repelled some men by others, cloisters, and churches, and oratories, and mosques, wherein the name of God is ever commemorated, would surely have been destroyed. And him who helpeth God will God surely help: for God is right Strong, Mighty

And God will certainly assist him who shall be on his side: For God is strong and mighty

The translators word this verse differently
Neither their flesh, nor their blood, ever reaches God. What reaches Him is the righteousness from you. Thus He subdued them to you, that you may glorify God for guiding you. And give good news to the charitable.
Their flesh and their food reach not Allah, but the devotion from you reacheth Him. Thus have We made them subject unto you that ye may magnify Allah that He hath guided you. And give good tidings (O Muhammad) to the good
Thus have we subjected them to you; haply, ye may give thanks! Their meat will never reach to God, nor yet their blood, but the piety from you will reach to Him. Thus hath He subjected them to you that ye may magnify God for guiding you: and give thou glad tidiness to those who do good
By no means can their flesh reach unto God, neither their blood; but piety on your part reacheth Him. Thus hath He subjected them to you, that ye might magnify God for His guidance: moreover, announce to those who do good deeds
Their flesh is not accepted of God, neither their blood; but your piety is accepted of Him. Thus have We given you dominion over them, that ye might magnify God, for the revelations whereby He hath directed you. And bear good tidings unto the righteous

9:18 Allah’ın mescitlerini sadece Allah’a ve ahiret gününe iman eden, namazı ikame eden, zekâtı veren ve ancak Allah’tan başkasından korkmayanlar imar eder. İşte onlar doğru yolda olanlardır.

God is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The allegory of His light is that of a pillar on which is a lamp. The lamp is within a glass. The glass is like a brilliant planet, fueled by a blessed tree, an olive tree, neither eastern nor western. Its oil would almost illuminate, even if no fire has touched it. Light upon Light. God guides to His light whomever He wills. God thus cites the parables for the people. God is cognizant of everything.
Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The similitude of His light is as a niche wherein is a lamp. The lamp is in a glass. The glass is as it were a shining star. (This lamp is) kindled from a blessed tree, an olive neither of the East nor of the West, whose oil would almost glow forth (of itself) though no fire touched it. Light upon light. Allah guideth unto His light whom He will. And Allah speaketh to mankind in allegories, for Allah is Knower of all things
God is the light of the heavens and the earth; His light is as a niche in which is a lamp, and the lamp is in a glass, the glass is as though it were a glittering star; it is lit from a blessed tree, an olive neither of the east nor of the west, the oil of which would well-nigh give light though no fire touched it,- light upon light!- God guides to His light whom He pleases; and God strikes out parables for men, and God all things doth know

God is the light of heaven and earth: The similitude of his light is as a niche in a wall, wherein a lamp is placed, and the lamp inclosed in a case of glass; the glass appears as it were a shining star. As for those who disbelieve, their works are like a mirage in a desert. The thirsty assumes it is to be water. Until, when he has reached it, he finds it to be nothing, but there he finds God, Who settles his account in full. God is swift in reckoning.
As for those who disbelieve, their deeds are as a mirage in a desert. The thirsty one supposeth it to be water till he cometh unto it and findeth it naught, and findeth, in the place thereof, Allah Who payeth him his due; and Allah is swift at reckoning
But those who misbelieve, their works are like the mirage in a plain, the thirsty counts it water till when he comes to it he finds nothing, but he finds that God is with him; and He will pay him his account, for God is quick to take account
But as to the infidels, their works are like the vapour in a plain which the thirsty dreameth to be water, until when he cometh unto it, he findeth it not aught, but findeth that God is with him; and He fully payeth him his account: for swift to take account is God
But as to the unbelievers, their works are like the vapour in a plain, which the thirsty traveller thinketh to be water, until, when he cometh thereto, he findeth it to be nothing; but he findeth God with him, and he will fully pay him his account; and God is swift in taking an account

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 22:39-40, 2:114, 9:17-18, 24:36-37, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - cloisters + and + churches; monasteries + churches + synagogues; oratories + and + mosques; places + of + worship + pulled + down. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
