And fight in the cause of God those who fight you, but do not commit aggression; God does not love the aggressors.
What does the Qur'an say about self-defence versus aggression?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 2:190 FIGHT IN THE WAY OF GOD AGAINST THOSE WHO FIGHT AGAINST YOU, BUT BEGIN NOT HOSTILITIES. LO, GOD LOVETH NOT AGGRESSORS. In because it is the founding permission and it contains its own two limits in one sentence - who may be fought, and who may not start it.
- 02 2:193 And fight them UNTIL PERSECUTION IS NO MORE, and religion is for God. BUT IF THEY DESIST, THEN LET THERE BE NO HOSTILITY EXCEPT AGAINST WRONG-DOERS. In because it states an end condition and then closes the campaign the moment the condition is met.
- 03 8:61 AND IF THEY INCLINE TO PEACE, INCLINE THOU ALSO TO IT, AND TRUST IN GOD. Lo, He is the Hearer, the Knower. In because it makes acceptance of an offered peace mandatory rather than optional, and adds only trust as the safeguard.
- 04 8:39 And fight them until persecution is no more and religion is all for God. BUT IF THEY CEASE, THEN LO, GOD IS SEER OF WHAT THEY DO. In because it repeats 2:193's structure and closes with an assurance rather than a further instruction.
- 05 2:191–192 And slay them wherever ye find them, and drive them out of the places whence they drove you out, FOR PERSECUTION IS WORSE THAN SLAUGHTER... BUT IF THEY DESIST, THEN LO, GOD IS FORGIVING, MERCIFUL. In as ONE PASSAGE because 2:191 is the verse most often quoted alone against this text, and 2:192 is the sentence that follows it. Reading 191 without 192 is the single most common misuse of the Qur'an. ALSO ADJACENT to the study Does the Qur'an tell Muslims to kill unbelievers wherever they find them?
- 06 22:39–40 Sanction is given unto those who fight BECAUSE THEY HAVE BEEN WRONGED... those who have been DRIVEN FROM THEIR HOMES UNJUSTLY only because they said: our Lord is God. For had it not been for God's repelling some men by means of others, CLOISTERS AND CHURCHES AND ORATORIES AND MOSQUES, WHEREIN THE NAME OF GOD IS OFT MENTIONED, WOULD ASSUREDLY HAVE BEEN PULLED DOWN. In as ONE PASSAGE because 22:39 gives the ground for permission and 22:40 gives the purpose, and the purpose named includes the protection of other religions' buildings.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Six passages, and every one of them contains a limit in its own sentence.
2:190 is the founding permission and it is self-limiting twice over: fight THOSE WHO FIGHT YOU - a defined counterparty - BUT BEGIN NOT HOSTILITIES - and then, GOD LOVES NOT AGGRESSORS. Permission, restriction, and the reason, in one verse.
2:193 and 8:39 both give an end condition and both stop the moment it is met: IF THEY DESIST / IF THEY CEASE. 8:61 goes further and removes the choice: IF THEY INCLINE TO PEACE, INCLINE THOU ALSO TO IT. The believer does not get to decide whether an offered peace is convenient.
2:191-192 is carried as one passage deliberately. 2:191 - slay them wherever you find them - is the most quoted sentence in the anti-Qur'an literature, and 2:192 is the sentence immediately after it: BUT IF THEY DESIST, GOD IS FORGIVING, MERCIFUL. The study Does the Qur'an tell Muslims to kill unbelievers wherever they find them? handles the 9:5 version of this; here the point is structural. The verse has a next line, and the next line ends the fighting.
22:39-40 gives the ground and the purpose. The ground is being WRONGED and DRIVEN FROM HOMES for saying our Lord is God. The purpose is stated in one of the more remarkable clauses in the book: without God repelling some people by means of others, CLOISTERS AND CHURCHES AND SYNAGOGUES AND MOSQUES would have been destroyed. The sanction to fight is justified partly by the protection of other religions' places of worship.
What this study does not settle is whether other verses override these. That is the abrogation question, and the study Does the Qur'an contradict itself - and what is 'abrogation'? finds the text says far less about it than the doctrine built on it.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 2:190, widening across 6 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

They ask you about the crescents. Say, "They are timetables for people, and for the Hajj." It is not virtuous that you approach homes from their backs, but virtue is to be pious. So approach homes from their doors, and observe God, that you may succeed.
They ask thee, (O Muhammad), of new moons, say: They are fixed seasons for mankind and for the pilgrimage. It is not righteousness that ye go to houses by the backs thereof (as do the idolaters at certain seasons), but the righteous man is he who wardeth off (evil). So go to houses by the gates thereof, and observe your duty to Allah, that ye may be successful
They will ask thee about the phases of the moon; say, 'They are indications of time for men and for the pilgrimage.' And it is not righteousness that ye should enter into your houses from behind them, but righteousness is he who fears; so enter into your houses by the doors thereof and fear God; haply ye may prosper yet
They will ask thee of the new moons. SAY: They are periods fixed for man's service and for the Pilgrimage. There is no piety in entering your houses at the back, but piety consists in the fear of God. Enter your houses then by their doors; and fear God that it may be well with you
They will ask thee concerning the phases of the moon: Answer, they are times appointed unto men, and to shew the season of the pilgrimage to Mecca. It is not righteousness that ye enter your houses by the back parts thereof, but righteousness is of him who feareth God. Therefore enter your houses by their doors; and fear God, that ye may be happy

And kill them wherever you overtake them, and expel them from where they had expelled you. Oppression is more serious than murder. But do not fight them at the Sacred Mosque, unless they fight you there. If they fight you, then kill them. Such is the retribution of the disbelievers.

And fight not with them at the Inviolable Place of Worship until they first attack you there, but if they attack you (there) then slay them. Such is the reward of disbelievers
Kill them wherever ye find them, and drive them out from whence they drive you out; for sedition is worse than slaughter; but fight them not by the Sacred Mosque until they fight you there; then kill them, for such is the recompense of those that misbelieve
And kill them wherever ye shall find them, and eject them from whatever place they have ejected you; for civil discord is worse than carnage: yet attack them not at the sacred Mosque, unless they attack you therein; but if they attack you, slay them. Such the reward of the infidels

That God may separate the bad from the good, and put the bad one upon the other, and heap them all up and put them into Hell! These are they who shall be lost
That God may separate the bad from the good, and put the bad, one upon another, and heap them up altogether, and then cast them into Hell. These indeed are the losers

Say to those who disbelieve: if they desist, their past will be forgiven. But if they persist-the practice of the ancients has passed away.
Tell those who disbelieve that if they cease (from persecution of believers) that which is past will be forgiven them; but if they return (thereto) then the example of the men of old hath already gone (before them, for a warning)
Say to those who misbelieve, if they desist they will be forgiven what is past; but if they return,- the course of those of former days has passed away
SAY to the infidels: If they desist from their unbelief, what is now past shall be forgiven them; but if they return to it, they have already before them the doom of the ancients
Say to those who disbelieve, if they desist, that which is past will be forgiven them; and if they return to their misdeeds, then verily the example of the former peoples has already gone before them

And know that whatever spoils you gain, to God belongs its fifth, and to the Messenger, and the relatives, and the orphans, and the poor, and to the wayfarer, provided you believe in God and in what We revealed to Our servant on the Day of Distinction, the day when the two armies met. God is Capable of everything.
And know that whatever ye take as spoils of war, lo! a fifth thereof is for Allah, and for the messenger and for the kinsman (who hath need) and orphans and the needy and the wayfarer, if ye believe in Allah and that which We revealed unto Our slave on the Day of Discrimination, the day when the two armies met. And know ye, that when ye have taken any booty, a fifth part belongeth to God and to the Apostle, and to the near of kin, and to orphans, and to the poor, and to the wayfarer, if ye believe in God, and in that which we have sent down to our servant on the day of the victory, the day of the meeting of the Hosts.

And fight them until there is no oppression, and worship becomes devoted to God alone. But if they cease, then let there be no hostility except against the oppressors.

Neither their flesh, nor their blood, ever reaches God. What reaches Him is the righteousness from you. Thus He subdued them to you, that you may glorify God for guiding you. And give good news to the charitable.
Their flesh and their food reach not Allah, but the devotion from you reacheth Him. Thus have We made them subject unto you that ye may magnify Allah that He hath guided you. And give good tidings (O Muhammad) to the good
Thus have we subjected them to you; haply, ye may give thanks! Their meat will never reach to God, nor yet their blood, but the piety from you will reach to Him. Thus hath He subjected them to you that ye may magnify God for guiding you: and give thou glad tidiness to those who do good
By no means can their flesh reach unto God, neither their blood; but piety on your part reacheth Him. Thus hath He subjected them to you, that ye might magnify God for His guidance: moreover, announce to those who do good deeds
Their flesh is not accepted of God, neither their blood; but your piety is accepted of Him. Thus have We given you dominion over them, that ye might magnify God, for the revelations whereby He hath directed you. And bear good tidings unto the righteous

Those who, when We empower them in the land, observe the prayer, and give regular charity, and command what is right, and forbid what is wrong. To God belongs the outcome of events.
Those who, if We give them power in the land, establish worship and pay the poor-due and enjoin kindness and forbid iniquity. And Allah's is the sequel of events
Who, if we establish them in the earth, are steadfast in prayer, and give alms, and bid what is right, and forbid what is wrong; and God's is the future of affairs
Those who, if we establish them in this land, will observe prayer, and pay the alms of obligation, and enjoin what is right, and forbid what is evil. And the final issue of all things is unto God
And He will assist those who, if We establish them in the earth, will observe prayer, and give alms, and command that which is just, and forbid that which is unjust. And unto God shall be the end of all things
وَإِن يُكَذِّبُوكَ فَقَدْ كَذَّبَتْ قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمُ نُوحٍ وَعَادٌ وَثَمُودُ

If they deny you-before them the people of Noah, and Aad, and Thamood also denied.
If they deny thee (Muhammad), even so the folk of Noah, and (the tribes of) A'ad and Thamud, before thee, denied (Our messengers)
But if they call thee liar, the people of Noah called him liar before them, as did 'Ad and Thamud
Moreover, if they charge thee with imposture, then already, before them, the people of Noah, and Ad and Themoud
If they accuse thee, O Mohammed, of imposture; consider that, before them, the people of Noah, and the tribes of Ad and Thamud
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it3 of the 4 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 2:190, 2:193, 8:61, 8:39, 2:191-192, 22:39-40, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - fight + in + the + way + of + god + against + those + who + fight + you; begin + not + hostilities; god + loveth + not + aggressors; if + they + incline + to + peace; there + is + no + hostility + except + against + wrong-doers; fight + them + until + persecution. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
