عَالَمِين AALAMIN Read the Qur'an in context

Does the Qur'an say women must pray at home?

In short

  • The text says: the Prophet's household are told to stay in their houses, to keep up the prayer and to give alms (33:33); those who believe are told to hasten to the remembrance of God when the call is made on the day of congregation (62:9); and in houses God allowed to be raised His name is remembered morning and evening (24:36-37).
  • The text does not say: that women must pray at home, or that they may not pray in a mosque.
  • The rest comes from: a report in which the Prophet is quoted as saying do not prevent your women from visiting the mosque, but their houses are better for them is in Sunan Abi Dawud, Book 2: Prayer (Kitab Al-Salat) (Abu Dawud 567); and a report that a wife of Umar prayed the dawn and night prayers in the mosque, citing the saying do not stop God's women-servants from going to God's mosques, is in Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 11: Friday Prayer (Bukhari 900).

Where the renderings split

33:33, Itani: "And settle in your homes"

33:33, Pickthall: "And stay in your houses"

33:33, Palmer: "And stay still in your houses"

33:33, Rodwell: "And abide still in your houses"

33:33, Sale: "And sit still in your houses"

Key findingsEditorial

One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.

  1. 01 33:33 Stay in your houses: said to the Prophet's household, with the prayer in the same verse
  2. 02 62:9 When the call is made on the day of congregation, hasten to the remembrance of God: said to those who believe
  3. 03 24:36–37 Houses God allowed to be raised, where His name is remembered morning and evening
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation

Written by the editors. Not a translation, and not a source. It is an editorial restatement of the verses in this study and carries their name because someone has to answer for it.

The verse most often brought to this question is 33:33, and it is addressed to the Prophet's household: at 33:33 Pickthall has "And stay in your houses" and, in the same verse, "O Folk of the Household". The verse does not speak of women in general, and it does not say where they pray.

The call to the gathered prayer at 62:9 is given to those who believe, in Itani's words at 62:9 "O you who believe!", and it names no one as excused.

So the text does not say that women must pray at home. Two reports outside the Qur'an, named above with links, speak of women and the mosque.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

Scope of this study

This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.

What this rests on

Opens with 33:33, widening across 3 passages in all.

Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

The versesSource fact 3 passages, each with every cleared translation

3 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.

Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

And stay in your houses. Bedizen not yourselves with the bedizenment of the Time of Ignorance. Be regular in prayer, and pay the poor-due, and obey Allah and His messenger. Allah's wish is but to remove uncleanness far from you, O Folk of the Household, and cleanse you with a thorough cleansing

And stay still in your houses and show not yourselves with the ostentation of the ignorance of yore; and be steadfast in prayer, and give alms, and obey God and His Apostle;- God only wishes to take away from you the horror as people of His House and to purify you thoroughly

John Medows Rodwell published 1861

George Sale published 1734

And sit still in your houses; and set not out your selves with the ostentation of the former time of ignorance: And observe the appointed times of prayer, and give alms; and obey God, and his apostle; for God desireth only to remove from you the abomination of vanity, since ye are the houshould of the prophet, and to purify you by a perfect purification

Talal Itani2012 God is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The allegory of His light is that of a pillar on which is a lamp. The lamp is within a glass. The glass is like a brilliant planet, fueled by a blessed tree, an olive tree, neither eastern nor western. Its oil would almost illuminate, even if no fire has touched it. Light upon Light. God guides to His light whomever He wills. God thus cites the parables for the people. God is cognizant of everything.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The similitude of His light is as a niche wherein is a lamp. The lamp is in a glass. The glass is as it were a shining star. (This lamp is) kindled from a blessed tree, an olive neither of the East nor of the West, whose oil would almost glow forth (of itself) though no fire touched it. Light upon light. Allah guideth unto His light whom He will. And Allah speaketh to mankind in allegories, for Allah is Knower of all things

Edward Henry Palmer1880 God is the light of the heavens and the earth; His light is as a niche in which is a lamp, and the lamp is in a glass, the glass is as though it were a glittering star; it is lit from a blessed tree, an olive neither of the east nor of the west, the oil of which would well-nigh give light though no fire touched it,- light upon light!- God guides to His light whom He pleases; and God strikes out parables for men, and God all things doth know

John Medows Rodwell1861 God is the LIGHT of the Heavens and of the Earth. His Light is like a niche in which is a lamp - the lamp encased in glass - the glass, as it were, a glistening star. From a blessed tree is it lighted, the olive neither of the East nor of the West, whose oil would well nigh shine out, even though fire touched it not! It is light upon light. God guideth whom He will to His light, and God setteth forth parables to men, for God knoweth all things

George Sale1734 God is the light of heaven and earth: The similitude of his light is as a niche in a wall, wherein a lamp is placed, and the lamp inclosed in a case of glass; the glass appears as it were a shining star. It is lighted with the oil of a blessed tree, an olive neither of the east, nor of the west: It wanteth little but that the oil thereof would give light, although no fire touched it. This is light added unto light: God will direct unto his light whom He pleaseth. God propoundeth parables unto men; for God knoweth all things

Talal Itani2012 As for those who disbelieve, their works are like a mirage in a desert. The thirsty assumes it is to be water. Until, when he has reached it, he finds it to be nothing, but there he finds God, Who settles his account in full. God is swift in reckoning.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 As for those who disbelieve, their deeds are as a mirage in a desert. The thirsty one supposeth it to be water till he cometh unto it and findeth it naught, and findeth, in the place thereof, Allah Who payeth him his due; and Allah is swift at reckoning

Edward Henry Palmer1880 But those who misbelieve, their works are like the mirage in a plain, the thirsty counts it water till when he comes to it he finds nothing, but he finds that God is with him; and He will pay him his account, for God is quick to take account

John Medows Rodwell1861 But as to the infidels, their works are like the vapour in a plain which the thirsty dreameth to be water, until when he cometh unto it, he findeth it not aught, but findeth that God is with him; and He fully payeth him his account: for swift to take account is God

George Sale1734 But as to the unbelievers, their works are like the vapour in a plain, which the thirsty traveller thinketh to be water, until, when he cometh thereto, he findeth it to be nothing; but he findeth God with him, and he will fully pay him his account; and God is swift in taking an account

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it2 of the 2 paragraphs signed with this study

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.

The question asks whether the Qur'an says women must pray at home. The verse read for staying at home, 33:33, is carried with the call to the gathered prayer (62:9) and the verse on houses of worship (24:36-37).

Staying at home is read in the study Does the Qur'an say women must stay at home?, and the gathered prayer in Does the Qur'an command the Friday congregational prayer? This study names two reports outside the Qur'an and does not grade them.
