Your Lord knows that you stay up nearly two-thirds of the night, or half of it, or one-third of it, along with a group of those with you. God designed the night and the day. He knows that you are unable to sustain it, so He has pardoned you. So read of the Quran what is possible for you. He knows that some of you may be ill; and others travelling through the land, seeking God's bounty; and others fighting in God's cause. So read of it what is possible for you, and observe the prayers, and give regular charity, and lend God a generous loan. Whatever good you advance for yourselves, you will find it with God, better and generously rewarded. And seek God's forgiveness, for God is Forgiving and Merciful.
What does the Qur'an say about how much of it to recite in prayer?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 73:20 Carried whole and alone because the verse is the answer and its setting is what gives the answer its force: it names the long vigils being kept, says God knows you cannot count them, says HE HAS TURNED TO YOU IN MERCY, and then twice gives the instruction - RECITE OF THE QUR'AN THAT WHICH IS EASY FOR YOU - the second time immediately after naming the sick, the travellers and those fighting. All four renderings carry the easy clause twice. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about praying at night (tahajjud)? and Does the Qur'an require reciting the Opening (al-Fatiha) in every prayer? with different reasons.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The text answers this question once, and the answer is a phrase rather than a quantity: RECITE OF IT WHAT IS EASY FOR YOU.
73:20 says it twice, and both times it is surrounded by reasons. Before the first: your Lord knows you keep vigil for nearly two-thirds of the night, or a half, or a third, and He knows that you cannot keep count of it, and He has turned to you in mercy. After the first and before the second: He knows that some of you will be sick, and others travelling in search of God's bounty, and others fighting in His cause.
So the instruction is given in a setting of explicit accommodation. Both times the easing is justified by the actual conditions of people's lives - exhaustion, illness, travel, danger.
That is the whole of what the Qur'an says about how much to recite. There is no minimum, no named surah, no number of verses, and nothing that varies by which prayer it is.
The rule most Muslims know - that al-Fatiha is recited in every unit, with something further added in some of them - is not in this verse or anywhere else in the book. It comes from the Prophet's practice and from the law built on it. This platform cannot show you any of it: no collection and no work of fiqh has cleared the rights audit.
The companion study asks specifically about al-Fatiha. What this one records is the shape of the text's own answer, which is unusual enough to be worth noticing: asked how much, it says what is easy for you, and gives its reasons.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 73:20.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

1 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Lo! thy Lord knoweth how thou keepest vigil sometimes nearly two-thirds of the night, or (sometimes) half or a third thereof, as do a party of those with thee. Allah measureth the night and the day. He knoweth that ye count it not, and turneth unto you in mercy. Recite, then, of the Qur'an that which is easy for you. He knoweth that there are sick folk among you, while others travel in the land in search of Allah's bounty, and others (still) are fighting for the cause of Allah. So recite of it that which is easy (for you), and establish worship and pay the poor-due, and (so) lend unto Allah a goodly loan. Whatsoever good ye send before you for your souls, ye will find it with Allah, better and greater in the recompense. And seek forgiveness of Allah. Lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful
Verily, thy Lord knows that thou dost stand up to pray nearly two-thirds of the night, or the half of it or the third of it, as do part of those who are with thee; for God measures the night and the day; He knows that ye cannot calculate it, and He turns relentant towards you. So read what is easy of the Qur'an. He knows that there will be of you some who are sick and others who beat about in the earth craving the grace of God, and others who are fighting in the cause of God. Then read what is easy of it and be steadfast in prayer, and give alms, and lend to God a goodly loan, for what ye send forward for yourselves of good ye will find it with God. It is better and a greater hire; and ask ye pardon of God: verily, God is forgiving, merciful
Of a truth, thy Lord knoweth that thou prayest almost two-thirds, or half, or a third of the night, as do a part of thy followers. But God measureth the night and the day: He knoweth that ye cannot count its hours aright, and therefore, turneth to you mercifully. Recite then so much of the Koran as may be easy to you. He knoweth that there will be some among you sick, while others travel through the earth in quest of the bounties of God; and others do battle in his cause. Recite therefore so much of it as may be easy. And observe the Prayers and pay the legal Alms, and lend God a liberal loan: for whatever good works ye send on before for your own behoof, ye shall find with God. This will be best and richest in the recompense. And seek the forgiveness of God: verily, God is forgiving, Merciful
Thy Lord knoweth that thou continuest in prayer and meditation sometimes near two third parts of the night, and sometimes one half thereof, and at other times one third part thereof: And a part of thy companions, who are with thee, do the same. But God measureth the night and the day; he knoweth that ye cannot exactly compute the same: Wherefore He turneth favourably unto you. Read, therefore, so much of the Koran as may be easy unto you. He knoweth that there will be some infirm among you; and others travel through the earth, that they may obtain a competency of the bounty of God; and others fight in the defence of God's faith. Read, therefore, so much of the same as may be easy. And observe the stated times of prayer, and pay the legal alms; and lend unto God an acceptable loan; for whatever good ye send before for your souls, ye shall find the same with God. This will be better, and will merit a greater reward. And ask God forgiveness; for God is ready to forgive, and merciful

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none.

So lest (bei Nacht), was euch vom Quran leichtfällt.

In verità Allāh è Perdonatore, Misericordioso.

Öyleyse Kur’an’dan (bildiğiniz) kolayınıza geleni okuyun.

The heaven will shatter thereby. His promise is always fulfilled.
The very heaven being then rent asunder. His promise is to be fulfilled
whereon the heaven cleaves - its promise shall be fulfilled
The very heaven shall be reft asunder by it: this threat shall be carried into effect
The heaven shall be rent in sunder thereby: The promise thereof shall surely be performed

This is a reminder. So whoever wills, let him take a path to his Lord.
Lo! This is a Reminder. Let him who will, then, choose a way unto his Lord
Verily, this is a memorial, and whoso will, let him take unto his Lord a way
Lo! this is a warning. Let him then who will, take the way to his Lord
Verily this is an admonition; and whoever is willing to be admonished, will take the way unto his Lord
73:20 — the verse above
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 73:20, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verse set was chosen by the Editor before the study was written, and is NOT a search result. No word search was run, because on this question a word search would have found the wrong verses or missed the point of the passage. Every verse in that set was read in full before use and checked against the claim made for it; a verse whose text did not carry that claim was left out rather than forced.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
