What does the Qur'an say about praying at night (tahajjud)?

Key findingsEditorial

One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.

  1. 01 17:79 And some part of the night awake for it, A LARGESS FOR THEE. It may be that thy Lord will raise thee to a praised estate. This is here because it marks the night prayer as an EXTRA - additional, over and above - which is the key to the whole set. ALSO CARRIED by Are the five daily prayers named in the Qur'an? and What does the Qur'an say about the times of the daily prayers? with different reasons.
  2. 02 73:1–4 In as ONE PASSAGE because the four verses are one instruction: O thou wrapped up in thy raiment, KEEP VIGIL THE NIGHT LONG, SAVE A LITTLE - a half thereof, or abate a little, or add a little - and chant the Qur'an in measure. Carried because it gives the fullest and most demanding form of the instruction, with the proportions spelled out.
  3. 03 73:20 Thy Lord knoweth how thou keepest vigil sometimes nearly two-thirds of the night, or half or a third - and He knoweth that ye count it not, AND TURNETH UNTO YOU IN MERCY. Recite, then, of the Qur'an THAT WHICH IS EASY FOR YOU. This is here because it is the text relaxing its own earlier instruction, in the same surah, and saying why. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about how much of it to recite in prayer? and Does the Qur'an require reciting the Opening (al-Fatiha) in every prayer?
  4. 04 25:64 And who spend the night before their Lord, PROSTRATE AND STANDING. Carried as a description of the people rather than an instruction - it appears in a list of the marks of the servants of the Merciful.
  5. 05 51:17–18 In as ONE PASSAGE because the two lines are one sentence: they used to SLEEP BUT LITTLE OF THE NIGHT, and ere the dawning of each day would seek forgiveness. Carried because it pairs the vigil with seeking forgiveness at its end.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation

Written by the editors. Not a translation, and not a source. It is an editorial restatement of the verses in this study and carries their name because someone has to answer for it.

Surah 73 contains both the strictest version of this instruction and its relaxation, and the two are in the same surah.

It opens hard. 73:1-4: you who are wrapped in your garment, keep vigil the night - all but a little of it; half, or somewhat less, or somewhat more - and recite the Qur'an in a measured way. Proportions are given. It is a demanding thing to be told.

Then 73:20, the last verse of the same surah, says that God knows you have been keeping vigil for nearly two-thirds of the night, or a half, or a third; that you cannot keep count of it; and that HE HAS TURNED TO YOU IN MERCY. Therefore: recite what is easy of it. The instruction is eased by the text itself, and the reason given is that the original was beyond ordinary reckoning.

That movement - a hard thing commanded, then lightened, with the lightening explained - is the most striking feature of this subject in the Qur'an.

Around it sit three other verses. 17:79 marks the night prayer as an ADDITIONAL thing, a largess, over and above what is required - which is why it has never been counted among the obligatory prayers. And two verses describe rather than command: 25:64, of those who pass the night before their Lord prostrate and standing; and 51:17-18, of those who slept little of the night and sought forgiveness at dawn. Both appear in lists of what certain people are like, not in lists of what anyone must do.

So the shape: not obligatory, explicitly extra, once commanded severely and then eased in the same surah, and elsewhere described as a mark of a certain kind of person rather than required of everyone.

The name tahajjud comes from 17:79, and the settled practice - its units, its timing in the last third of the night, its place among the voluntary prayers - is from the Prophet's practice, which this platform cannot show you.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

Scope of this study

This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.

What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.

What this rests on

Opens with 17:79, widening across 5 passages in all.

Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

The versesSource fact 5 passages, each with every cleared translation

5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.

Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Your Lord knows that you stay up nearly two-thirds of the night, or half of it, or one-third of it, along with a group of those with you. God designed the night and the day. He knows that you are unable to sustain it, so He has pardoned you. So read of the Quran what is possible for you. He knows that some of you may be ill; and others travelling through the land, seeking God's bounty; and others fighting in God's cause. So read of it what is possible for you, and observe the prayers, and give regular charity, and lend God a generous loan. Whatever good you advance for yourselves, you will find it with God, better and generously rewarded. And seek God's forgiveness, for God is Forgiving and Merciful.

Compare translations (4)
Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall published 1930

Lo! thy Lord knoweth how thou keepest vigil sometimes nearly two-thirds of the night, or (sometimes) half or a third thereof, as do a party of those with thee. Allah measureth the night and the day. He knoweth that ye count it not, and turneth unto you in mercy. Recite, then, of the Qur'an that which is easy for you. He knoweth that there are sick folk among you, while others travel in the land in search of Allah's bounty, and others (still) are fighting for the cause of Allah. So recite of it that which is easy (for you), and establish worship and pay the poor-due, and (so) lend unto Allah a goodly loan. Whatsoever good ye send before you for your souls, ye will find it with Allah, better and greater in the recompense. And seek forgiveness of Allah. Lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful

Edward Henry Palmer published 1880

Verily, thy Lord knows that thou dost stand up to pray nearly two-thirds of the night, or the half of it or the third of it, as do part of those who are with thee; for God measures the night and the day; He knows that ye cannot calculate it, and He turns relentant towards you. So read what is easy of the Qur'an. He knows that there will be of you some who are sick and others who beat about in the earth craving the grace of God, and others who are fighting in the cause of God. Then read what is easy of it and be steadfast in prayer, and give alms, and lend to God a goodly loan, for what ye send forward for yourselves of good ye will find it with God. It is better and a greater hire; and ask ye pardon of God: verily, God is forgiving, merciful

John Medows Rodwell published 1861

Of a truth, thy Lord knoweth that thou prayest almost two-thirds, or half, or a third of the night, as do a part of thy followers. But God measureth the night and the day: He knoweth that ye cannot count its hours aright, and therefore, turneth to you mercifully. Recite then so much of the Koran as may be easy to you. He knoweth that there will be some among you sick, while others travel through the earth in quest of the bounties of God; and others do battle in his cause. Recite therefore so much of it as may be easy. And observe the Prayers and pay the legal Alms, and lend God a liberal loan: for whatever good works ye send on before for your own behoof, ye shall find with God. This will be best and richest in the recompense. And seek the forgiveness of God: verily, God is forgiving, Merciful

George Sale published 1734

Thy Lord knoweth that thou continuest in prayer and meditation sometimes near two third parts of the night, and sometimes one half thereof, and at other times one third part thereof: And a part of thy companions, who are with thee, do the same. But God measureth the night and the day; he knoweth that ye cannot exactly compute the same: Wherefore He turneth favourably unto you. Read, therefore, so much of the Koran as may be easy unto you. He knoweth that there will be some infirm among you; and others travel through the earth, that they may obtain a competency of the bounty of God; and others fight in the defence of God's faith. Read, therefore, so much of the same as may be easy. And observe the stated times of prayer, and pay the legal alms; and lend unto God an acceptable loan; for whatever good ye send before for your souls, ye shall find the same with God. This will be better, and will merit a greater reward. And ask God forgiveness; for God is ready to forgive, and merciful

So lest (bei Nacht), was euch vom Quran leichtfällt.

In verità Allāh è Perdonatore, Misericordioso.

Öyleyse Kur’an’dan (bildiğiniz) kolayınıza geleni okuyun. What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 17:79, 73:1-4, 73:20, 25:64, 51:17-18, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.

How this set was arrived at. The verse set was chosen by the Editor before the study was written, and is NOT a search result. No word search was run, because on this question a word search would have found the wrong verses or missed the point of the passage. Every verse in that set was read in full before use and checked against the claim made for it; a verse whose text did not carry that claim was left out rather than forced.

Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.

Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.

tafsir

Commentary on the Qur'an: the works in which scholars interpret and explain its verses.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. The platform's scope statement names it as "interpretation (tafsir)".

hadith

A report that claims to preserve something the Prophet Muhammad said or did.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. It follows the platform's standing distinction: the sunnah is the practice, and a hadith is a report claiming to preserve it.

asbab al-nuzul

Accounts of the circumstances in which particular verses of the Qur'an are reported to have been revealed ("occasion of revelation").

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. "Occasion of revelation", in the singular, is the wording the platform's studies use when they say what they rest on.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The work is as recorded in the platform's rights audit; the date of death is from the Library of Congress name authority file.
