Who is he who will offer God a generous loan, so He will multiply it for him manifold? God receives and amplifies, and to Him you will be returned.
What does the Qur'an say about a 'goodly loan to God' repaid many times over?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 2:245 WHO IS IT THAT WILL LEND UNTO GOD A GOODLY LOAN, so that He may give it increase manifold? God straiteneth and enlargeth. Unto Him ye will return. In because it is the first occurrence and it is put as a QUESTION - an invitation looking for a volunteer - rather than as a command.
- 02 57:11 WHO IS HE THAT WILL LEND UNTO GOD A GOODLY LOAN, THAT HE MAY DOUBLE IT FOR HIM AND HIS MAY BE A RICH REWARD? In because it repeats the question in another surah, which makes the form deliberate.
- 03 57:18 Lo, those who give alms, both men and women, and lend unto God a goodly loan, it will be doubled for them, and theirs will be a rich reward. In because it identifies the lenders as those who give alms - so the loan is not a separate transaction from charity. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an mean that God multiplies the reward for whom He wills?, with a different reason there.
- 04 64:17 If ye lend unto God a goodly loan, HE WILL DOUBLE IT FOR YOU AND WILL FORGIVE YOU; and God is Responsive, Clement. In because the return promised includes FORGIVENESS as well as increase, which none of the others state.
- 05 73:20 And establish worship and pay the poor-due and lend unto God a goodly loan. WHATSOEVER GOOD YE SEND BEFORE YOU FOR YOUR SOULS, YE WILL FIND IT WITH GOD, BETTER AND GREATER IN THE RECOMPENSE. In because it explains the metaphor - what is sent ahead is found again - and lists the loan alongside prayer and the poor-due.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The metaphor is startling once it is looked at directly: God, who owns everything, asks to BORROW.
2:245 puts it as a question rather than an instruction: WHO IS IT THAT WILL LEND UNTO GOD A GOODLY LOAN? So does 57:11. Twice the text advertises for a lender.
The terms of the loan are stated in each case: increase manifold, doubled, a rich reward. 64:17 adds something the others do not - HE WILL DOUBLE IT FOR YOU AND WILL FORGIVE YOU. The return on the loan includes forgiveness.
The word GOODLY qualifies the loan in every instance and is never defined.
Two verses stop this being a separate pious transaction. 57:18 identifies the lenders as THOSE WHO GIVE ALMS, both men and women - so the loan is charity described under another figure. And 73:20 lists it in a series with establishing worship and paying the poor-due.
73:20 also explains what the metaphor is for: WHATSOEVER GOOD YE SEND BEFORE YOU FOR YOUR SOULS, YE WILL FIND IT WITH GOD, BETTER AND GREATER. Sending ahead, and finding again. The loan figure makes the giving a deposit rather than a loss.
And 2:245 is careful in a way the others are not. Having promised the increase, it adds: GOD STRAITENETH AND ENLARGETH. The verse that invites the loan concedes in the same breath that provision narrows as well as widens.
The study What does the Qur'an say about debt and giving time to repay? and the study Does the Qur'an forbid interest (riba)? carry the human side of lending, where taking increase is forbidden.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 2:245, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

And why is it that you do not spend in the cause of God, when to God belongs the inheritance of the heavens and the earth? Not equal among you are those who contributed before the conquest, and fought. Those are higher in rank than those who contributed afterwards, and fought. But God promises both a good reward. God is Well Experienced in what you do.
And what aileth you that ye spend not in the way of Allah when unto Allah belongeth the inheritance of the heavens and the earth? Those who spent and fought before the victory are not upon a level (with the rest of you). Such are greater in rank than those who spent and fought afterwards. Unto each hath Allah promised good. And Allah is Informed of what ye do
What ails you that ye give not alms in God's cause? for God's is the inheritance of the heavens and the earth. Not alike amongst you is he who gives alms before the victory and fights,- they are grander in rank than those who give alms afterwards and fight. But to all does God promise good; and God of what ye do is well aware
And what hath come to you that ye expend not for the cause of God? since the heritage of the Heavens and of the Earth is God's only! Those among you who contributed before the victory, and fought, shall be differently treated from certain others among you! Such shall have a nobler grade than those who contributed and fought after it. But a goodly recompense hath God promised to all; and God is fully informed of your actions
And what aileth you, that ye contribute not of your substance for the defence of God's true religion? Since unto God appertaineth the inheritance of heaven and earth. Those among you who shall have contributed and fought in defence of the faith, before the taking of Mecca, shall not be held equal with those who shall contribute and fight for the same afterwards. These shall be superiour in degree unto those who shall contribute and fight for the propagation of the faith after the abovementioned success: But unto all hath God promised a most excellent reward; and God well knoweth that which ye do

Know that the worldly life is only play, and distraction, and glitter, and boasting among you, and rivalry in wealth and children. It is like a rainfall that produces plants, and delights the disbelievers. But then it withers, and you see it yellowing, and then it becomes debris. While in the Hereafter there is severe agony, and forgiveness from God, and acceptance. The life of this world is nothing but enjoyment of vanity.
Know that the life of the world is only play, and idle talk, and pageantry, and boasting among you, and rivalry in respect of wealth and children; as the likeness of vegetation after rain, whereof the growth is pleasing to the husbandman, but afterward it drieth up and thou seest it turning yellow, then it becometh straw. And in the Hereafter there is grievous punishment, and (also) forgiveness from Allah and His good pleasure, whereas the life of the world is but matter of illusion
Know that the life of this world is but a sport, and a play, and an adornment, and something to boast of amongst yourselves; and the multiplying of children is like a rain-growth, its vegetation pleases the misbelievers; then they wither away, and thou mayest see them become yellow; then they become but grit. But in the hereafter is a severe woe, and forgiveness from God and His goodwill; but the life of this world is but a chattel of guile
Know ye that this world's life is only a sport, and pastime, and show, and a cause of vainglory among you! And the multiplying of riches and children is like the plants which spring up after rain - Their growth rejoiceth the husband-man; then they wither away, and thou seest them all yellow; then they become stubble. And in the next life is a severe chastisement, Or else pardon from God and His satisfaction: and this world's life is but a cheating fruition
Know that this present life is only a toy and a vain amusement: And worldly pomp, and the affectation of glory among you, and the multiplying of riches and children, are as the plants nourished by the rain, the springing up whereof delighteth the husbandmen; afterwards they wither, so that thou seest the same turned yellow, and at length they become dry stubble. And in the life to come will be a severe punishment for those who covet worldly grandeur; and pardon from God, and favour for those who renounce it: For this present life is no other than a deceitful provision

So keep your duty to Allah as best ye can, and listen, and obey, and spend; that is better for your souls. And whoso is saved from his own greed, such are the successful

Your Lord knows that you stay up nearly two-thirds of the night, or half of it, or one-third of it, along with a group of those with you. God designed the night and the day. He knows that you are unable to sustain it, so He has pardoned you. So read of the Quran what is possible for you. He knows that some of you may be ill; and others travelling through the land, seeking God's bounty; and others fighting in God's cause. So read of it what is possible for you, and observe the prayers, and give regular charity, and lend God a generous loan. Whatever good you advance for yourselves, you will find it with God, better and generously rewarded. And seek God's forgiveness, for God is Forgiving and Merciful.
Compare translations (4)
Lo! thy Lord knoweth how thou keepest vigil sometimes nearly two-thirds of the night, or (sometimes) half or a third thereof, as do a party of those with thee. Allah measureth the night and the day. He knoweth that ye count it not, and turneth unto you in mercy. Recite, then, of the Qur'an that which is easy for you. He knoweth that there are sick folk among you, while others travel in the land in search of Allah's bounty, and others (still) are fighting for the cause of Allah. So recite of it that which is easy (for you), and establish worship and pay the poor-due, and (so) lend unto Allah a goodly loan. Whatsoever good ye send before you for your souls, ye will find it with Allah, better and greater in the recompense. And seek forgiveness of Allah. Lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful
Verily, thy Lord knows that thou dost stand up to pray nearly two-thirds of the night, or the half of it or the third of it, as do part of those who are with thee; for God measures the night and the day; He knows that ye cannot calculate it, and He turns relentant towards you. So read what is easy of the Qur'an. He knows that there will be of you some who are sick and others who beat about in the earth craving the grace of God, and others who are fighting in the cause of God. Then read what is easy of it and be steadfast in prayer, and give alms, and lend to God a goodly loan, for what ye send forward for yourselves of good ye will find it with God. It is better and a greater hire; and ask ye pardon of God: verily, God is forgiving, merciful
Of a truth, thy Lord knoweth that thou prayest almost two-thirds, or half, or a third of the night, as do a part of thy followers. But God measureth the night and the day: He knoweth that ye cannot count its hours aright, and therefore, turneth to you mercifully. Recite then so much of the Koran as may be easy to you. He knoweth that there will be some among you sick, while others travel through the earth in quest of the bounties of God; and others do battle in his cause. Recite therefore so much of it as may be easy. And observe the Prayers and pay the legal Alms, and lend God a liberal loan: for whatever good works ye send on before for your own behoof, ye shall find with God. This will be best and richest in the recompense. And seek the forgiveness of God: verily, God is forgiving, Merciful
Thy Lord knoweth that thou continuest in prayer and meditation sometimes near two third parts of the night, and sometimes one half thereof, and at other times one third part thereof: And a part of thy companions, who are with thee, do the same. But God measureth the night and the day; he knoweth that ye cannot exactly compute the same: Wherefore He turneth favourably unto you. Read, therefore, so much of the Koran as may be easy unto you. He knoweth that there will be some infirm among you; and others travel through the earth, that they may obtain a competency of the bounty of God; and others fight in the defence of God's faith. Read, therefore, so much of the same as may be easy. And observe the stated times of prayer, and pay the legal alms; and lend unto God an acceptable loan; for whatever good ye send before for your souls, ye shall find the same with God. This will be better, and will merit a greater reward. And ask God forgiveness; for God is ready to forgive, and merciful

So lest (bei Nacht), was euch vom Quran leichtfällt.
In verità Allāh è Perdonatore, Misericordioso.

Öyleyse Kur’an’dan (bildiğiniz) kolayınıza geleni okuyun.

The heaven will shatter thereby. His promise is always fulfilled.
The very heaven being then rent asunder. His promise is to be fulfilled
whereon the heaven cleaves - its promise shall be fulfilled
The very heaven shall be reft asunder by it: this threat shall be carried into effect
The heaven shall be rent in sunder thereby: The promise thereof shall surely be performed

This is a reminder. So whoever wills, let him take a path to his Lord.
Lo! This is a Reminder. Let him who will, then, choose a way unto his Lord
Verily, this is a memorial, and whoso will, let him take unto his Lord a way
Lo! this is a warning. Let him then who will, take the way to his Lord
Verily this is an admonition; and whoever is willing to be admonished, will take the way unto his Lord
73:20 — the verse above
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 2:245, 57:11, 57:18, 64:17, 73:20, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - lend + unto + god + a + goodly + loan; goodly + loan; who + is + he + that + will + lend; he + will + double + it + for + him. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 2 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 5:12 - carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about the Children of Israel and their covenant?; 34:37 - carried by the studies What does the Qur'an say about wealth that won't help on the Last Day? and What does the Qur'an say about wealth and children as the adornment of this life?
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
