Does the Qur'an say every letter recited earns reward - or is that from hadith?

Key findingsEditorial

One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.

  1. 01 73:20 RECITE, THEN, OF THE QUR'AN THAT WHICH IS EASY FOR YOU. He knoweth that there are sick folk among you, while others travel in the land in search of God's bounty, and others fight for the cause of God. So recite of it that which is easy for you. In because it is the Qur'an's own instruction on how much to recite, it is stated twice in one verse, and the measure it gives is what is easy - not a quantity.
  2. 02 73:4 Or add a little thereto, and CHANT THE QUR'AN IN MEASURE. In because it is the only instruction on the MANNER of recitation, and it concerns pace rather than amount.
  3. 03 7:204 And when the Qur'an is recited, give ear to it and pay heed, THAT YE MAY OBTAIN MERCY. In because it is the one place an outcome is attached to recitation at all, the outcome is conditional, and it attaches to LISTENING rather than to reciting. ALSO CARRIED by Does the Qur'an promise a specific reward for reciting particular surahs?, with a different reason there.
  4. 04 17:106 And it is a Qur'an that WE HAVE DIVIDED, that thou mayst recite it unto mankind AT INTERVALS; and We have revealed it by successive revelation. In because it describes the text as portioned for delivery over time, which is the nearest thing to a statement about units of recitation. ALSO CARRIED by Why was the Qur'an revealed gradually, by its own account?, with a different reason there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation

Written by the editors. Not a translation, and not a source. It is an editorial restatement of the verses in this study and carries their name because someone has to answer for it.

It is from . The Qur'an contains no statement that a reward attaches to each letter, and no counting of any kind.

That is the answer, and this study's job is to show what the Qur'an says instead - because it does have instructions about recitation, and they run in a different direction.

73:20 gives the measure, and states it twice in one verse: RECITE OF THE QUR'AN THAT WHICH IS EASY FOR YOU. And it gives its reasons - some are sick, some are travelling for trade, some are fighting. The quantity is explicitly scaled to circumstance.

73:4 gives the manner, and it is about pace: CHANT THE QUR'AN IN MEASURE - slowly, distinctly, in a measured rhythm, depending on the rendering. Not quickly, and not by volume.

7:204 is the only verse attaching an outcome, and two things about it are worth noticing. The outcome is conditional - THAT YE MAY OBTAIN MERCY. And the instruction is to the LISTENER: give ear and pay heed.

17:106 says the text was divided so that it could be recited at intervals.

Put together: recite what is easy, at a measured pace, and when it is recited, listen. Nothing about counts, letters, or multiples.

The claim that each letter recited earns ten rewards comes from . This study cannot quote it, grade it, or assess it, because no hadith collection has cleared the rights audit. What it can do is tell a reader plainly that the claim is not Qur'anic, and that the Qur'an's own instruction is about ease and attention rather than about quantity. How do you tell a Qur'anic promise from a hadith virtue (fadila) from a folk claim? sets out the general method.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

Scope of this study

This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.

What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.

What this rests on

Opens with 73:20, widening across 4 passages in all.

Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

The versesSource fact 4 passages, each with every cleared translation

4 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.

Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Your Lord knows that you stay up nearly two-thirds of the night, or half of it, or one-third of it, along with a group of those with you. God designed the night and the day. He knows that you are unable to sustain it, so He has pardoned you. So read of the Quran what is possible for you. He knows that some of you may be ill; and others travelling through the land, seeking God's bounty; and others fighting in God's cause. So read of it what is possible for you, and observe the prayers, and give regular charity, and lend God a generous loan. Whatever good you advance for yourselves, you will find it with God, better and generously rewarded. And seek God's forgiveness, for God is Forgiving and Merciful.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall published 1930

Lo! thy Lord knoweth how thou keepest vigil sometimes nearly two-thirds of the night, or (sometimes) half or a third thereof, as do a party of those with thee. Allah measureth the night and the day. He knoweth that ye count it not, and turneth unto you in mercy. Recite, then, of the Qur'an that which is easy for you. He knoweth that there are sick folk among you, while others travel in the land in search of Allah's bounty, and others (still) are fighting for the cause of Allah. So recite of it that which is easy (for you), and establish worship and pay the poor-due, and (so) lend unto Allah a goodly loan. Whatsoever good ye send before you for your souls, ye will find it with Allah, better and greater in the recompense. And seek forgiveness of Allah. Lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful

Edward Henry Palmer published 1880

Verily, thy Lord knows that thou dost stand up to pray nearly two-thirds of the night, or the half of it or the third of it, as do part of those who are with thee; for God measures the night and the day; He knows that ye cannot calculate it, and He turns relentant towards you. So read what is easy of the Qur'an. He knows that there will be of you some who are sick and others who beat about in the earth craving the grace of God, and others who are fighting in the cause of God. Then read what is easy of it and be steadfast in prayer, and give alms, and lend to God a goodly loan, for what ye send forward for yourselves of good ye will find it with God. It is better and a greater hire; and ask ye pardon of God: verily, God is forgiving, merciful

John Medows Rodwell published 1861

Of a truth, thy Lord knoweth that thou prayest almost two-thirds, or half, or a third of the night, as do a part of thy followers. But God measureth the night and the day: He knoweth that ye cannot count its hours aright, and therefore, turneth to you mercifully. Recite then so much of the Koran as may be easy to you. He knoweth that there will be some among you sick, while others travel through the earth in quest of the bounties of God; and others do battle in his cause. Recite therefore so much of it as may be easy. And observe the Prayers and pay the legal Alms, and lend God a liberal loan: for whatever good works ye send on before for your own behoof, ye shall find with God. This will be best and richest in the recompense. And seek the forgiveness of God: verily, God is forgiving, Merciful

George Sale published 1734

Thy Lord knoweth that thou continuest in prayer and meditation sometimes near two third parts of the night, and sometimes one half thereof, and at other times one third part thereof: And a part of thy companions, who are with thee, do the same. But God measureth the night and the day; he knoweth that ye cannot exactly compute the same: Wherefore He turneth favourably unto you. Read, therefore, so much of the Koran as may be easy unto you. He knoweth that there will be some infirm among you; and others travel through the earth, that they may obtain a competency of the bounty of God; and others fight in the defence of God's faith. Read, therefore, so much of the same as may be easy. And observe the stated times of prayer, and pay the legal alms; and lend unto God an acceptable loan; for whatever good ye send before for your souls, ye shall find the same with God. This will be better, and will merit a greater reward. And ask God forgiveness; for God is ready to forgive, and merciful

So lest (bei Nacht), was euch vom Quran leichtfällt.

In verità Allāh è Perdonatore, Misericordioso.

Öyleyse Kur’an’dan (bildiğiniz) kolayınıza geleni okuyun. What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 73:20, 73:4, 7:204, 17:106, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.

How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - recite + of + it + that + which + is + easy; read + the + qur'an; recite + the + qur'an + in + slow + measured + rhythmic + tones; letters. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.

What was returned and not carried. 3 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 10:61 - carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about the Preserved Tablet?; 16:98 - carried by What does the Qur'an say about seeking refuge before reciting?; 84:21 - about those who refuse.

Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.

Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.

hadith

A report that claims to preserve something the Prophet Muhammad said or did.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. It follows the platform's standing distinction: the sunnah is the practice, and a hadith is a report claiming to preserve it.

tafsir

Commentary on the Qur'an: the works in which scholars interpret and explain its verses.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. The platform's scope statement names it as "interpretation (tafsir)".

asbab al-nuzul

Accounts of the circumstances in which particular verses of the Qur'an are reported to have been revealed ("occasion of revelation").

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. "Occasion of revelation", in the singular, is the wording the platform's studies use when they say what they rest on.

al-Tabari

A scholar who wrote Jami' al-bayan, a commentary on the Qur'an in Arabic; he died in 923 CE.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The work is as recorded in the platform's rights audit; the date of death is from the Library of Congress name authority file.

Ibn Kathir

A scholar who wrote Tafsir al-Qur'an al-'Azim, a commentary on the Qur'an in Arabic; he died in 1373 CE.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The work is as recorded in the platform's rights audit; the date of death is from the Library of Congress name authority file.
