In them are maidens restraining their glances, untouched before by any man or jinn.
What does the Qur'an say about the companions of paradise (hur)?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 55:56 Therein are those of MODEST GAZE, whom neither man nor jinni will have touched before them. In because the first quality named is a restrained look rather than an appearance, which is the opposite of how these verses are usually summarised.
- 02 37:48–49 And with them are those of modest gaze, with lovely eyes, as they were hidden eggs (of the ostrich). In as ONE PASSAGE because 37:49's simile is what the four translators most disagree over, and dropping it hides the divergence.
- 03 44:54 And We shall wed them unto fair ones with wide, lovely eyes. In because it is the plainest form of the phrase the word hur is taken from, and because the verb is a marriage rather than a grant.
- 04 56:22–23 And fair ones with wide, lovely eyes, like unto hidden pearls. In as ONE PASSAGE because the comparison in 56:23 is part of the description and is a comparison to something protected, not to something displayed.
- 05 38:52 And with them are those of modest gaze, COMPANIONS - equals in age. In because the word the translators reach for here is companion and the note added is equality of age, which is the least sensational thing said in the set and the easiest to leave out.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Five passages, and what they actually say is milder and stranger than their reputation.
The first quality named, in 55:56 and in 37:48 and 38:52, is a RESTRAINED GAZE - eyes that do not rove. Three of the five passages lead with that. The second is large or lovely eyes. The third, in 38:52, is equality of age, and the word used there is companions.
The comparisons are worth noticing because they are all to things kept hidden. 56:23 - like hidden pearls. 37:49 - like eggs concealed in the sand, which is how the four translators variously render an image every one of them found difficult. Nothing in these verses is a comparison to display.
The verb in 44:54 and 52:20 is to WED, not to give or to award.
Now the thing a reader most wants to know. There is NO NUMBER anywhere in these verses. Not seventy-two, not any figure. The seventy-two is not in the Qur'an, and the study What does the Qur'an actually say about paradise - and where does the '72 virgins' figure come from? traces where it does come from - a - and assesses what that means. This study and that one should be read together.
Two further honest points. The text does not say these companions are the reward for martyrdom; that claim is made by joining these verses to others, and the study Does the Qur'an promise paradise for dying in battle? finds those others more restrained than the claim. And 21:97 - which uses the wide-eyed language of DISBELIEVERS STARING IN TERROR at the Judgment - is recorded as a drop precisely because a looser search would have swept it in here and produced nonsense.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 55:56, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 5 passages, each with every cleared translation
5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Therein they will not taste death, beyond the first death; and He will protect them from the torment of Hell.
They taste not death therein, save the first death. And He hath saved them from the doom of hell
They shall not taste therein of death save their first death, and we will keep them from the torment of hell
Therein, their first death passed, shall they taste death no more; and He shall keep them from the pains of Hell
They shall not taste death therein, after the first death; and God shall deliver from the pains of hell

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 55:56, 37:48-49, 44:54, 56:22-23, 38:52, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - houris; hur; fair + ones; damsels; maidens; wide + eyes; modest + gaze. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 3 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 21:97 - matched on the wide-eyes language, but this is terror at the Judgment - the exact opposite context. A single-word search would have put it in this study; 55:70 - general, and the referent is disputed among the four translations; 52:20 - near-identical to 44:54, which is kept; recorded so the repetition is visible.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
