Do not consider those killed in the cause of God as dead. In fact, they are alive, at their Lord, well provided for.
Does the Qur'an promise paradise for dying in battle?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 3:169–170 Think not of those slain in the way of God as dead; nay, they are living, with their Lord they have provision - jubilant because of what God hath bestowed, rejoicing for those who have not yet joined them. In because it is the fullest statement and because what it promises is being alive and provided for, described from the far side.
- 02 2:154 Call not those who are slain in the way of God dead; nay, they are living, only ye perceive not. In because it is the same claim in its shortest form and it locates the difficulty in the observer - ye perceive not - rather than in the fact.
- 03 9:111 God hath bought from the believers their lives and their wealth because the Garden will be theirs: they shall fight in the way of God and shall slay and be slain. It is a promise binding upon Him in the Torah and the Gospel and the Qur'an. In because it is the verse that comes closest to the transaction the question describes, and because it is the one most often quoted without its conditions or its context.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The verses say less than the question assumes, and one of them says more.
2:154 and 3:169-170 are not about entry to paradise at all. They are a correction of a description: do not call these people dead. What they assert is that the slain in God's way are LIVING and provided for, and 2:154 adds that the reason this is not obvious is on the observer's side - only ye perceive not. Neither verse states a rule about who gets in.
9:111 is the one that carries real weight, and it should be read whole rather than in the fragment that usually circulates. It is framed as a PURCHASE: God has bought the believers' lives and wealth, the price is the Garden, and the promise is said to be binding upon Him in the Torah and the Gospel and the Qur'an alike. It is the strongest verse for the claim in the question.
Three things limit what can be built on it. The phrase in all three verses is IN THE WAY OF GOD - a qualifier, not a synonym for combat as such, and the text does not define it here. Nothing in these verses covers a person who kills people not at war with them; the questions of who may be fought and on what terms belong to the studies Does the Qur'an tell Muslims to kill unbelievers wherever they find them? and Does the Qur'an call for holy war? and are not answered here. And the transaction in 9:111 is stated of believers who fight AND ARE FIGHTING IN THAT WAY - it is not a general offer attached to dying violently.
The seventy-two virgins are not in these verses and are not in the Qur'an. That is covered by the study What does the Qur'an actually say about paradise - and where does the '72 virgins' figure come from?, which should be read alongside this one.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 3:169–170, widening across 3 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 3 passages, each with every cleared translation
3 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

God has purchased from the believers their lives and their properties in exchange for Paradise. They fight in God's way, and they kill and get killed. It is a promise binding on Him in the Torah, and the Gospel, and the Quran. And who is more true to his promise than God? So rejoice in making such an exchange-that is the supreme triumph.

Lo! Allah hath bought from the believers their lives and their wealth because the Garden will be theirs: they shall fight in the way of Allah and shall slay and be slain. Rejoice then in your bargain that ye have made, for that is the supreme triumph
Verily, God hath bought of the believers their persons and their wealth, for the paradise they are to have; they shall fight in the way of God, and they shall slay and be slain: promised in truth, in the law and the gospel and the Qur'an;- and who is more faithful to His covenant than God ? Be ye glad then in the covenant which ye have made with Him, for that is the mighty happiness
Verily, of the faithful hath God bought their persons and their substance, on condition of Paradise for them in return: on the path of God shall they fight, and slay, and be slain: a Promise for this is pledged in the Law, and in the Evangel, and in the Koran - and who more faithful, in to his engagement than God? Rejoice, therefore, in the contract that ye have contracted: for this shall be the great bliss
Verily God hath purchased of the true believers their souls, and their substance, promising them the enjoyment of paradise; on condition that they fight for the cause of God: Whether they slay or be slain, the promise for the same is assuredly due by the law, and the gospel, and the Koran. What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it3 of the 4 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 3:169-170, 2:154, 9:111, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verse set was chosen by the Editor before the study was written, and is NOT a search result. No word search was run, because on this question a word search would have found the wrong verses or missed the point of the passage.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
