O people! We created you from a male and a female, and made you races and tribes, that you may know one another. The best among you in the sight of God is the most righteous. God is All-Knowing, Well-Experienced.
Does marrying within your biradari or caste carry religious weight?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 49:13 Itani has "made you races and tribes, that you may know one another", and closes "The best among you in the sight of God is the most righteous". The renderings name the measure differently: Pickthall has "the best in conduct", Palmer and Sale have "the most pious of you", and Rodwell has "he who feareth Him most".
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
None of the five renders a verse that asks a person to marry within their tribe, clan or caste.
49:13 is the verse that speaks of tribes, and it gives a reason for them: Itani has "made you races and tribes, that you may know one another". In the same verse it names a measure of worth: Itani has "The best among you in the sight of God is the most righteous", and Pickthall has "the noblest of you, in the sight of Allah, is the best in conduct". Palmer and Sale have "the most pious of you", and Rodwell has "he who feareth Him most".
The verse does not speak of marriage. It speaks of why people are made into groups, and of who is most honoured in the sight of God. This study does not draw a marriage rule from it.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this rests on
Opens with 49:13.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 1 passages, each with every cleared translation
1 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

O you who believe! No people shall ridicule other people, for they may be better than they. Nor shall any women ridicule other women, for they may be better than they. Nor shall you slander one another, nor shall you insult one another with names. Evil is the return to wickedness after having attained faith. Whoever does not repent-these are the wrongdoers.
O ye who believe! Let not a folk deride a folk who may be better than they (are), not let women (deride) women who may be better than they are; neither defame one another, nor insult one another by nicknames. O ye who believe! let not one class ridicule another who are perchance better than they; nor let women ridicule other women who are perchance better than they; and do not defame each other, nor call each other bad names - an ill name is iniquity after faith

Neither defame one another, nor call one another by nicknames. Bad is it to be called wicked after having professed the faith: and whoso repent not of this are doers of wrong
O true believers, let not men laugh other men to scorn; who peradventure may be better than themselves: Neither let women laugh other women to scorn; who may possibly be better than themselves. An ill name it is to be charged with wickedness, after having embraced the faith: And whoso repenteth not, they will be the unjust doers

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
The word biradari is printed in none of the five; the probe 'biradari' returns 0 rows. The probe 'caste|castes' returns 2 rows at two verses, both in Pickthall and neither about marriage, and the probe 'tribe|tribes' returns 92 rows at 53 verses. 49:13 is carried because it is the verse that says why peoples and tribes were made and names a measure of worth beside it. This study does not say whom a person may marry. Any ruling on marriage between families or groups comes from jurisprudence, a layer this platform does not hold or show.
