Then We passed the Book to those of Our servants whom We chose. Some of them wrong their souls, and some follow a middle course, and some are in the foremost in good deeds by God's leave; that is the greatest blessing.
Does the Qur'an rank Muslims, and can anyone judge another's level?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 35:32 Names three groups among those given the Book - one who wrongs himself, one who keeps a middle course, one foremost in good deeds. The plainest statement in the set that differences of degree are described at all
- 02 56:7–11 Names three groups again, at the judgment: the companions of the right, the companions of the left, and the foremost, who are brought near. Included as the second of the two grouping passages, not as a separate claim
- 03 49:14 The one passage that distinguishes saying 'we believe' from saying 'we have submitted', and says faith has not yet entered the hearts of those addressed. The verse the question is usually asked about
- 04 4:95–96 States degrees explicitly - those who strive are not equal to those who sit still, and are given a rank above them - and, in all five renderings, also says good was promised to both
- 05 58:11 Degrees again, and who confers them: God raises those who believe and those given knowledge
- 06 12:76 Above every possessor of knowledge is one who knows more - the ceiling on any claim to standing, stated inside a narrative rather than as a rule
- 07 53:32 The direct prohibition on the self-assessment half of the question: do not claim purity for yourselves
- 08 4:94 The direct prohibition on the other-assessment half: do not tell someone who offers you a greeting that they are not a believer
- 09 49:11 Forbids ridicule between groups, on the stated ground that those ridiculed may be better than those ridiculing
- 10 49:13 Gives the criterion of honour, and gives it to God's knowledge. One of the two verses the five renderings agree on most closely in this set, at band 1 on the five-based measure - 49:14 is fractionally closer still - though they give the criterion three ways: piety (Sale, Palmer), fearing Him most (Rodwell), best in conduct (Pickthall), most righteous (Itani)
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The Qur'an does describe people as standing at different levels, and it says so more than once. At 35:32 those given the Book divide into three: one who wrongs himself, one who keeps a middle course, and one who is foremost in good deeds. At 56:7-11 the sorting is threefold again - the companions of the right, the companions of the left, and the foremost, who are brought near. 4:95 says those who strive with their wealth and their lives are not equal to those who sit still, and gives them a rank above them - while promising good to both. 58:11 has God raising those who believe and those given knowledge in rank, and 12:76 sets a ceiling over the whole idea: above every possessor of knowledge is one who knows more.
What a reader may not expect is who does the ranking. In every one of those passages, in all five renderings, it is God's act - God prefers, God raises, God knows best. Itani has God preferring the strivers at 4:95, elevating believers and the knowing at 58:11, and raising by degrees at 12:76, exactly as the four before him do. And where the same verses turn to what people may say about one another, they run the other way and they are unanimous: do not claim purity for yourselves, for He knows best who fears Him (53:32); do not tell someone who offers you peace that they are not a believer (4:94); let no group ridicule another, who may be better than they are (49:11).
No verse gives anyone a way of measuring another's standing. The criterion at 49:13 is rendered three different ways across the five: piety or God-fearing in Sale, Palmer and Rodwell, the best in conduct in Pickthall, and the most righteous in Itani. The synthesis names the split rather than choosing among them, and nothing in these verses tells a reader how to see any of it in someone else.
The framework many readers know, which sorts islam, iman and ihsan into levels, is a later one resting on the literature - a step beyond these verses, taken by scholars, and this study does not take it.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this rests on
Opens with 35:32, widening across 10 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 10 passages, each with every cleared translation
10 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Then We gave the Scripture as inheritance unto those whom We elected of Our bondmen. But of them are some who wrong themselves and of them are some who are lukewarm, and of them are some who outstrip (others) through good deeds, by Allah's leave. That is the great favour
Then we gave the Book for an inheritance to those whom we chose of our servants, and of them are some who wrong themselves, and of them are some who take a middle course, and of them are some who vie in good works by the permission of their Lord; that is great grace
Moreover, we have made the Book an heritage to those of our servants whom we have chosen. Some of them injure themselves by evil deeds; others keep the midway between good and evil; and others, by the permission of God, outstrip in goodness; this is the great merit
And We have given the book of the Koran in heritage unto such of our servants as We have chosen: Of them there is one who injureth his own soul; and there is another of them who keepeth the middle way; and there is another of them who out-strippeth others in good works, by the permission of God. This is the great excellence

Not equal are the inactive among the believers-except the disabled-and the strivers in the cause of God with their possessions and their persons. God prefers the strivers with their possessions and their persons above the inactive, by a degree. But God has promised goodness to both. Yet God favors the strivers, over the inactive, with a great reward.

Those of the believers who sit still, other than those who have a (disabling) hurt, are not on an equality with those who strive in the way of Allah with their wealth and lives. Allah hath conferred on those who strive with their wealth and lives a rank above the sedentary. Unto each Allah hath promised good, but He hath bestowed on those who strive a great reward above the sedentary
Not alike are those of the believers who sit at home without harm, and those who are strenuous in God's way with their wealth and their persons. God hath preferred those who are strenuous with their wealth and their persons to those who sit still, by many degrees, and to each hath God promised good, but God hath preferred the strenuous for a mighty hire over those who sit still
Those believers who sit at home free from trouble, and those who do valiantly in the cause of God with their substance and their persons, shall not be treated alike. God hath assigned to those who contend earnestly with their persons and with their substance, a rank above those who sit at home. Goodly promises hath He made to all. But God hath assigned to the strenuous a rich recompense, above those who sit still at home
Those believers who sit still at home, not having any hurt, and those who employ their fortunes and their persons for the religion of God, shall not be held equal. God hath preferred those who employ their fortunes and their persons in that cause, to a degree of honour above those who sit at home: God hath indeed promised every one paradise, but God hath preferred those who fight for the faith before those who sit still

O you who believe! When you journey in the way of God, investigate, and do not say to him who offers you peace, "You are not a believer," aspiring for the goods of this world. With God are abundant riches. You yourselves were like this before, and God bestowed favor on you; so investigate. God is well aware of what you do.
O ye who believe! When ye go forth (to fight) in the way of Allah, be careful to discriminate, and say not unto one who offereth you peace: "Thou art not a believer," seeking the chance profits of this life (so that ye may despoil him). With Allah are plenteous spoils. Even thus (as he now is) were ye before; but Allah hath since then been gracious unto you. Therefore take care to discriminate. Allah is ever Informed of what ye do
O ye who believe! when ye are knocking about in the way of God be discerning, and do not say to him who offers you a salutation, 'Thou art no believer,' craving after the chances of this world's life, for with God are many spoils! So were ye aforetime, but God was gracious to you, be ye then discerning; verily, God of what ye do is well aware
O believers! when ye go forth to the fight for the cause of God, be discerning, and say not to every one who meeteth you with a greeting, "Thou art not a believer" in your greed after the chance good things of this present life! With God are abundant spoils. Such hath been your wont in times past; but god hath been gracious to you. Be discerning, then, for God well knoweth what ye do
O true believers, when ye are on a march in defence of the true religion, justly discern such as ye shall happen to meet, and say not unto him who saluteth you, thou art not a true believer; seeking the accidental goods of the present life; for with God is much spoil: Such have ye formerly been; but God hath been gracious unto you; therefore make a just discernment, for God is well acquainted with that which ye do

While the angels are removing the souls of those who have wronged themselves, they will say, "What was the matter with you?" They will say, "We were oppressed in the land." They will say, "Was God's earth not vast enough for you to emigrate in it?" These-their refuge is Hell. What a wretched retreat!
Lo! as for those whom the angels take (in death) while they wrong themselves, (the angels) will ask: In what were ye engaged? They will say: We were oppressed in the land. (The angels) will say: Was not Allah's earth spacious that ye could have migrated therein? As for such, their habitation will be hell, an evil journey's end
Verily, the angels when they took the souls of those who had wronged themselves, said, 'What state were ye in?' they say, 'We were but weak in the earth;' they said, 'Was not God's earth wide enough for you to flee away therein?' These are those whose resort is hell, and a bad journey shall it be
The angels, when they took the souls of those who had been unjust to their own weal, demanded, "What hath been your state?" They said, "We were the weak ones of the earth." They replied, "Was not God's earth broad enough for you to flee away in?" These! their home shall be Hell, and evil the passage to it
Moreover unto those whom the angels put to death, having injured their own souls, the angels said, of what religion were ye? They answered, we were weak in the earth. The angels replied, was not God's earth wide enough, that ye might fly therein to a place of refuge? Therefore their habitation shall be hell; and an evil journey shall it be thither

And he began with their sacks before the sacks of his brother; then he drew it forth from his brother's sack. Thus did we devise a stratagem for Joseph. He could not take his brother by the king's religion except God pleased;- we raise the degrees of whomsoever we please, and over every possessor of knowledge is one who knows
And Joseph began with their sacks, before the sack of his brother, and then from the sack of his brother he drew it out. This stratagem did we suggest to Joseph. By the King's law he had no power to seize his brother, had not God pleased. We uplift into grades of wisdom whom we will. And there is one knowing above every one else endued with knowledge
Then he began by their sacks, before he searched the sack of his brother; and he drew out the cup from his brother's sack. Thus did we furnish Joseph with a stratagem. It was not lawful for him to take his brother for a bondman, by the law of the king of Egypt, had not God pleased to allow it, according to the offer of his brethren. We exalt to degrees of knowledge and honour whom we please: And there is one who is knowing above all those who are indued with knowledge

Jis negalėjo paimti savo brolio (vergu) pagal karaliaus įstatymus, išskyrus jei Allahas to norėjo. (Taigi Allahas privertė brolius laikytis savo nurodytos „bausmės, t. y. pavergti vagį“) Mes išaukštiname tą, ką Mes norime, tačiau virš visų, apdovanotų žiniomis, yra Visa Žinantis (Allahas).

Those who avoid gross sins and indecencies-except for minor lapses-your Lord is of Vast Forgiveness. He knows you well, ever since He created you from the earth, and ever since you were embryos in your mothers' wombs. So do not acclaim your own virtue; He is fully aware of the righteous.

Those who avoid enormities of sin and abominations, save the unwilled offences - (for them) lo! thy Lord is of vast mercy. He is Best Aware of you (from the time) when He created you from the earth, and when ye were hidden in the bellies of your mothers. Therefor ascribe not purity unto yourselves. He is Best Aware of him who wardeth off (evil)
those who shun great sins and iniquities,- all but venial faults,- verily, thy Lord is of ample forgiveness; He knows best about you, when He produced you from the earth, and when ye were embryos in the wombs of your mothers. Make not yourselves out, then, to be pure; He knows best who it is that fears
To those who avoid great crimes and scandals but commit only lighter faults, verily, thy Lord will be diffuse of mercy. He well knew you when he produced you out of the earth, and when ye were embryos in your mother's womb. Assert not then your own purity. He best knoweth who feareth him

Never should a believer kill another believer, unless by error. Anyone who kills a believer by error must set free a believing slave, and pay compensation to the victim's family, unless they remit it as charity. If the victim belonged to a people who are hostile to you, but is a believer, then the compensation is to free a believing slave. If he belonged to a people with whom you have a treaty, then compensation should be handed over to his family, and a believing slave set free. Anyone who lacks the means must fast for two consecutive months, by way of repentance to God. God is All-Knowing, Most Wise.
It is not for a believer to kill a believer unless (it be) by mistake. He who hath killed a believer by mistake must set free a believing slave, and pay the blood-money to the family of the slain, unless they remit it as a charity. If he (the victim) be of a people hostile unto you, and he is a believer, then (the penance is) to set free a believing slave. And if he cometh of a folk between whom and you there is a covenant, then the blood-money must be paid unto his folk and (also) a believing slave must be set free. And whoso hath not the wherewithal must fast two consecutive months. A penance from Allah. Allah is Knower, Wise
It is not for a believer to kill a believer save by mistake; and whosoever kills a believer by mistake then let him free a believing neck; and the blood-money must be paid to his people save what they shall remit as alms. But if he be from a tribe hostile to you and yet a believer, then let him free a believing neck. And if it be a tribe betwixt whom and you there is an alliance, then let the blood-money be paid to his friends, and let him free a believing neck; but he who cannot find the means, then let him fast for two consecutive months - a penance this from God, for God is knowing, wise
A believer killeth not a believer but by mischance: and whoso killeth a believer by mischance shall be bound to free a believer from slavery; and the blood-money shall be paid to the family of the slain, unless they convert it into alms. But if the slain believer be of a hostile people, then let him confer freedom on a slave who is a believer; and if he be of a people between whom and yourselves there is an alliance, then let the blood-money be paid to his family, and let him set free a slave who is a believer: and let him who hath not the means, fast two consecutive months. This is the penance enjoined by God; and God is Knowing, Wise
It is not lawful for a believer to kill a believer, unless it happen by mistake; and whoso killeth a believer by mistake, the penalty shall be the freeing of a believer from slavery, and a fine to be paid to the family of the deceased, unless they remit it as alms: And if the slain person be of a people at enmity with you, and be a true believer, the penalty shall be the freeing of a believer; but if he be of a people in confederacy with you, a fine to be paid to his family, and the freeing of a believer. But whoever shall kill a believer of set purpose, his recompense shall be hell; for ever shall he abide in it; God shall be wrathful with him, and shall curse him, and shall get ready for him a great torment
But whoso killeth a believer designedly, his reward shall be hell; he shall remain therein for ever; and God shall be angry with him; and shall curse him, and shall prepare for him a great punishment

No people shall ridicule other people, for they may be better than they. Nor shall any women ridicule other women, for they may be better than they. Nor shall you slander one another, nor shall you insult one another with names. Evil is the return to wickedness after having attained faith. Whoever does not repent-these are the wrongdoers.

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. O you who believe!
O ye who believe! Let not a folk deride a folk who may be better than they (are), not let women (deride) women who may be better than they are; neither defame one another, nor insult one another by nicknames. Bad is the name of lewdness after faith. And whoso turneth not in repentance, such are evil-doers
O ye who believe! let not one class ridicule another who are perchance better than they; nor let women ridicule other women who are perchance better than they; and do not defame each other, nor call each other bad names - an ill name is iniquity after faith
O Believers! let not men laugh men to scorn who haply may be better than themselves; neither let women laugh women to scorn who may haply be better than themselves! Neither defame one another, nor call one another by nicknames. Bad is it to be called wicked after having professed the faith: and whoso repent not of this are doers of wrong
O true believers, let not men laugh other men to scorn; who peradventure may be better than themselves: Neither let women laugh other women to scorn; who may possibly be better than themselves. Neither defame one another; nor call one another by opprobrious appellations. An ill name it is to be charged with wickedness, after having embraced the faith: And whoso repenteth not, they will be the unjust doers

O ye who believe! carefully avoid suspicion; verily, some suspicion is a sin. And do not play the spy, nor backbite each other; would one of you like to eat his dead brother's flesh?- why! ye would abhor it! then fear God; verily, God is relentant, compassionate
O Believers! avoid frequent suspicions, for some suspicions are a crime; and pry not: neither let the one of you traduce another in his absence. Would any one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? Surely ye would loathe it. And fear ye God: for God is Ready to turn, Merciful

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it7 of the 7 paragraphs signed with this study
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across all five cleared translations (Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930, Itani 2012) of every verse listed, in full, and against nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.
RE-DERIVED OVER FIVE ON 2026-09-08, superseding the version signed 2026-08-25 over four. Itani 2012 cleared on 2026-09-07, after that signing, and this study has now been read against him at every anchor. He enters as a fifth voice and is not promoted to the reading that settles anything. What changed: 49:13's criterion is now a three-way split across five renderings rather than a two-way split across four, Itani supplying "the most righteous"; 56:10 gains Itani's "the forerunners"; 49:14 gains Itani's "We have submitted", which stands with Pickthall's "We submit"; 4:95's outlier is now Sale alone of five; and 56:10's published rank is corrected. What did not change: the verse set, the reasons per verse, the God-does-the-ranking finding, and the refusal to use the islam/iman/ihsan framework.
WHY EACH VERSE IS IN: stated per verse in the selection, which is signed with this prose. Ten passages, fifteen verses, in two sets the synthesis keeps apart - passages describing degrees (35:32, 56:7-11, 4:95-96, 58:11, 12:76, 49:14) and passages governing what people may say about each other (53:32, 4:94, 49:11, 49:13). No verse was included that could not be given its own reason, and the re-check over five translations added and removed none.
PROBE VOCABULARY OF THIS RE-DERIVATION, RECORDED SO IT CAN BE RE-RUN. The version signed when four translations were cleared named no search terms; this re-check over five translations records its own. Run 2026-09-08 over all five cleared renderings, conjunctive, mushaf order: ["foremost"] - 6 verses; ["forerunners"] - 3; ["rank"] - 16; ["degree"] - 13; ["levels"] - 0. Union 31 verses. THE UNION IS NOT A CANDIDATE SET FOR THIS STUDY and no verse was taken from it: this set was reasoned per verse, not search-selected. Three results are recorded because they bear on the prose: "foremost" reaches 35:32 in Itani alone, "forerunners" reaches 56:10 in Itani alone, and "levels" - the word in the question - occurs in no rendering of any verse in the corpus.
WHERE THE RENDERINGS PART COMPANY, NAMED RATHER THAN RESOLVED. 49:14: the second thing the addressees are told to say is 'We have become Muslims' (Palmer), 'We submit' (Pickthall), 'We have submitted' (Itani), 'We profess Islam' (Rodwell), 'we have embraced Islam' (Sale) - the distinction the verse draws survives all five, the word does not, and Itani stands with Pickthall on submission rather than on Islam. 49:13: the criterion is 'the most pious' (Palmer, Sale), 'he who feareth Him most' (Rodwell), 'the best in conduct' (Pickthall), 'the most righteous' (Itani) - three senses across five renderings, and the synthesis now names the split rather than naming Pickthall against a single alternative. 4:95: the activity contrasted with sitting still is striving with wealth and lives (Pickthall, Palmer, Itani), contending earnestly (Rodwell), and fighting for the faith (Sale) - Sale's is the most narrowly military of the five, and the synthesis uses the sense the other four carry. 56:10 is the widest-diverging verse in the set (band 5, 745th of 6,236 on the five-based measure; the version signed when four translations were cleared gave 615th): Sale expands it to 'those who have preceded others in the faith', supplying 'in the faith' where the others do not, and Itani alone reaches for 'the forerunners' where Rodwell, Palmer and Pickthall all say 'foremost'.
WHAT THIS STUDY DELIBERATELY DOES NOT ANSWER, each with the uncleared layer that would answer it. (1) The islam / iman / ihsan triad is not used and is not in the synthesis: it is a later framework resting on the layer, and no hadith source has cleared the rights audit. If it ever appears it appears as what it is - a named framework from a named source, quoted, in the hadith layer - and not as the scheme these verses are sorted into. (2) Who the 'foremost' are, in 35:32 or 56:10-11: the five do not identify them, and identification would need , which exists in Arabic by age but has no cleared English. (3) Who is addressed in 49:14 and when: an occasion-of-revelation question, and the occasions layer is empty for every verse on this platform with its rights request open. (4) Whether anyone may be declared outside Islam: adjacent, and a reader may arrive carrying it, but these verses do not settle it and answering it would need juristic sources this platform holds none of. (5) Anything a reader should do: nothing here answers 'what should I do'.
SCOPE CLAUSES: 'in all five renderings' stands in this prose by editorial ruling of 2026-08-25, carried forward at the re-check over five translations with the count restated. In an introduction the agreement of the renderings is the standing premise and restating it is decoration; in a study the agreement is the finding, and the scope clause is the warrant that keeps the sentence retrieval rather than interpretation.
