What is the story of Moses and Khidr?

Key findingsEditorial

One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.

  1. 01 18:60–65 And when Moses said unto his servant: I will not give up until I reach the point where the two rivers meet, though I march on for ages... Then found they ONE OF OUR SLAVES, UNTO WHOM WE HAD GIVEN MERCY FROM US, AND HAD TAUGHT HIM KNOWLEDGE FROM OUR PRESENCE. In as ONE PASSAGE because the journey and the meeting are one movement, and because the figure is never named - he is described only by what he was given.
  2. 02 18:66–70 Moses said unto him: may I follow thee, TO THE END THAT THOU MAYST TEACH ME RIGHT CONDUCT OF THAT WHICH THOU HAST BEEN TAUGHT? He said: LO, THOU CANST NOT BEAR WITH ME. HOW CANST THOU BEAR WITH THAT WHEREOF THOU CANST NOT COMPASS ANY KNOWLEDGE? In as ONE PASSAGE because the request, the refusal and the reason are consecutive, and the reason given is that patience is impossible without understanding.
  3. 03 18:71–78 So they twain set out till, when they were in the ship, HE MADE A HOLE THEREIN. (Moses) said: hast thou made a hole therein to drown the folk thereof?... Till, when they met a lad, he slew him. (Moses) said: WHAT! HAST THOU SLAIN AN INNOCENT SOUL?... Till, when they came unto the folk of a certain township, they asked its folk for food but they refused to make them guests. And they found therein a wall upon the point of falling into ruin, AND HE REPAIRED IT. (Moses) said: if thou hadst wished, thou couldst have taken payment for it. He said: THIS IS THE PARTING BETWEEN THEE AND ME. In as ONE PASSAGE because the three acts and the three objections are one sequence and the parting is its result.
  4. 04 18:79–82 As for the ship, it belonged to poor people working on the river, and I wished to mar it, FOR THERE WAS A KING BEHIND THEM WHO IS TAKING EVERY SHIP BY FORCE. And as for the lad, his parents were believers and we feared lest he should oppress them by rebellion and disbelief... And as for the wall, it belonged to TWO ORPHAN BOYS in the city, and there was beneath it a treasure belonging to them... I DID IT NOT UPON MY OWN COMMAND. Such is the interpretation of that wherewith thou couldst not bear. In as ONE PASSAGE because the three explanations must be read together and because the last clause disclaims his own authorship.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation

Written by the editors. Not a translation, and not a source. It is an editorial restatement of the verses in this study and carries their name because someone has to answer for it.

The Qur'an tells this in one continuous passage and never names the second figure. He is described only as ONE OF OUR SLAVES, UNTO WHOM WE HAD GIVEN MERCY FROM US, AND HAD TAUGHT HIM KNOWLEDGE FROM OUR PRESENCE. The name Khidr is not in the text; it comes from and later literature, and no such source has cleared the rights audit.

Moses asks to follow him and be taught. The refusal at 18:67-68 is the key to the whole passage: THOU CANST NOT BEAR WITH ME - HOW CANST THOU BEAR WITH THAT WHEREOF THOU CANST NOT COMPASS ANY KNOWLEDGE? Patience is declared impossible in the absence of understanding, and the story then proves it three times.

The three acts get harder. A hole in a boat. The killing of a boy. And - the one that finally breaks Moses - repairing a wall for people who had just refused them food, without asking payment.

Moses objects each time, and the third objection is the least serious of the three, which is part of the point.

The explanations at 18:79-82 recast every act. The boat was damaged so a king seizing boats would pass it over. The boy would have brought grief on believing parents. The wall covered a treasure belonging to TWO ORPHAN BOYS, and had to stand until they were grown.

And then the clause that governs the whole story: I DID IT NOT UPON MY OWN COMMAND.

What the passage does not do is license anyone to act on hidden knowledge. The figure disclaims his own authority in his last sentence, and the man who could not bear it was a prophet.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

Scope of this study

This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.

What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.

What this rests on

Opens with 18:60–65, widening across 4 passages in all.

Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

The versesSource fact 4 passages, each with every cleared translation

4 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.

Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

18:74 Basi wakatoka wawili hao mpaka wakamkuta kijana, akamuua. (Musa) akasema: Ala! Umemuua mtu asiye na kosa, na wala hakuua nafsi yoyote! Ama hakika umefanya jambo baya kabisa!

And as for the wall, it belonged to two orphaned boys in the town. Beneath it was a treasure that belonged to them. Their father was a righteous man. Your Lord wanted them to reach their maturity, and then extract their treasure-as a mercy from your Lord. I did not do it of my own accord. This is the interpretation of what you were unable to endure."

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall published 1930

And as for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys in the city, and there was beneath it a treasure belonging to them, and their father had been righteous, and thy Lord intended that they should come to their full strength and should bring forth their treasure as a mercy from their Lord; and I did it not upon my own command. Such is the interpretation of that wherewith thou couldst not bear

Edward Henry Palmer published 1880

And as for the wall, it belonged to two orphan youths in the city, and beneath it was a treasure belonging to them both, and their father was a righteous man, and their Lord desired that they should reach puberty, and then take out their treasure as a mercy from thy Lord; and I did it not on my own bidding. That is the interpretation of what thou couldst not have patience with

John Medows Rodwell published 1861

And as to the wall, it belonged to two orphan youths in the city, and beneath it was their treasure: and their father was a righteous man: and thy Lord desired that they should reach the age of strength, and take forth their treasure through the mercy of thy Lord. And not of mine own will have I done this. This is the interpretation of that which thou couldst not bear with patience

George Sale published 1734

And the wall belonged to two orphan youths in the city, and under it was a treasure hidden which belonged to them; and their father was a righteous man: And thy Lord was pleased that they should attain their full age, and take forth their treasure, through the mercy of thy Lord. And I did not what thou hast seen of mine own will, but by God's direction. This is the interpretation of that which thou couldest not bear with patience

Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 18:60-65, 18:66-70, 18:71-78, 18:79-82, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.

How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - one + of + our + slaves + unto + whom + we + had + given + mercy; thou + canst + not + bear + with + me; junction + of + the + two + seas; scuttled + the + ship; i + did + it + not + upon + my + own + command. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.

What was returned and not carried. 3 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 18:63 - absorbed into the 18:60-65 passage; 18:72 - absorbed into the 18:71-78 passage; 18:75 - same reason.

Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.

tafsir

Commentary on the Qur'an: the works in which scholars interpret and explain its verses.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. The platform's scope statement names it as "interpretation (tafsir)".

hadith

A report that claims to preserve something the Prophet Muhammad said or did.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. It follows the platform's standing distinction: the sunnah is the practice, and a hadith is a report claiming to preserve it.

asbab al-nuzul

Accounts of the circumstances in which particular verses of the Qur'an are reported to have been revealed ("occasion of revelation").

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. "Occasion of revelation", in the singular, is the wording the platform's studies use when they say what they rest on.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The work is as recorded in the platform's rights audit; the date of death is from the Library of Congress name authority file.
