What are they asking one another about?
What does Surah an-Naba (The Announcement) say?
In short
- The surah says: it asks what they are asking one another about, and says they will find out (78:1-5); it points to the earth made a cradle, the mountains, sleep, night and day, and the rain (78:6-16); a day is appointed, when the trumpet is blown (78:17-18); hell lies in ambush for the oppressors, and the renderings differ on what they taste besides boiling water (78:21-25); the righteous are given gardens (78:31-32); and the faithless will wish to be dust (78:40).
- The surah does not say: when the day appointed at 78:17 will come; all five say that it is fixed or appointed, but it gives no date.
- The rest comes from: other surahs say that the Day of Decision, as Pickthall names it at 78:17, is the term for them all (44:40), and that a time is appointed for it (77:12-13); neither gives a date, and this study reads Surah an-Naba alone.
Where the renderings split
78:25, Itani: "freezing hail"
78:25, Pickthall: "a paralysing cold"
78:25, Palmer: "boiling water and pus"
78:25, Rodwell: "running sores"
78:25, Sale: "filthy corruption"
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 78:1 Whereof do they question one another. This is here because it opens the surah on a question about what people ask each other: "Concerning what do the unbelievers ask questions of one another" in Sale, "Of what ask they of one another" in Rodwell, "Of what do they ask each other" in Palmer and "Whereof do they question one another" in Pickthall, and "What are they asking one another about" in Itani. Sale alone names the askers, as "the unbelievers".
- 02 78:2 (It is) of the awful tidings. This is here because it names what they ask about: "the great news of the resurrection" in Sale, "the mighty information" in Palmer, "the awful tidings" in Pickthall and "the Great Event" in Itani. Sale alone adds "of the resurrection". Pickthall's bracket "(It is)" is his own.
- 03 78:3 Concerning which they are in disagreement. This is here because it says that they differ over it: "about which they disagree" in Sale, "The theme of their disputes" in Rodwell, "whereon they do dispute" in Palmer, "Concerning which they are in disagreement" in Pickthall and "About which they disagree" in Itani.
- 04 78:4 Nay, but they will come to know. This is here because it answers that they will come to know: "Assuredly they shall hereafter know the truth thereof" in Sale, "they shall know too well" in Palmer, "they will come to know" in Pickthall and "they will find out" in Itani.
- 05 78:5 Nay, again, but they will come to know. This is here because it gives the answer again: "Again, assuredly they shall hereafter know the truth thereof" in Sale, "they shall certainly know it" in Rodwell, "Again, nay, they shall know too well" in Palmer, "Nay, again, but they will come to know" in Pickthall and "Most certainly, they will find out" in Itani.
- 06 78:6 Have We not made the earth an expanse. This is here because it begins to ask about what was made, starting with the earth: "a bed" in Sale, "a couch" in Rodwell and Palmer, "an expanse" in Pickthall and "a cradle" in Itani.
- 07 78:7 And the high hills bulwarks. This is here because it names the mountains among what was made: "for stakes to fix the same" in Sale, "its tent-stakes" in Rodwell, "as stakes" in Palmer and "pegs" in Itani, where Pickthall has "the high hills bulwarks". Also carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about the mountains as 'pegs'?, with a different reason there.
- 08 78:8 And We have created you in pairs. This is here because it says that people were made as pairs: "of two sexes" in Sale and Rodwell and "in pairs" in Palmer, Pickthall and Itani.
- 09 78:9 And have appointed your sleep for repose. This is here because it names sleep as given for ease: "for rest" in Sale, Rodwell, Palmer and Itani and "for repose" in Pickthall. Also carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about work by day and rest by night?, with a different reason there.
- 10 78:10 And have appointed the night as a cloak. This is here because it names the night as a covering: "a garment to cover you" in Sale, "a mantle" in Rodwell, "a garment" in Palmer, "a cloak" in Pickthall and "a cover" in Itani. Also carried by the studies What does the Qur'an say about earning a living? and What does the Qur'an say about work by day and rest by night?, with different reasons there.
- 11 78:11 And have appointed the day for livelihood. This is here because it names the day as made for making a living: "to the gaining your livelihood" in Sale, "for gaining livelihood" in Rodwell and "for livelihood" in Palmer, Pickthall and Itani. Also carried by the studies What does the Qur'an say about earning a living? and What does the Qur'an say about work by day and rest by night?, with different reasons there.
- 12 78:12 And We have built above you seven strong (heavens). This is here because it names what was built above: "seven solid heavens" in Sale and Rodwell, "seven solid (heavens)" in Palmer and "seven strong (heavens)" in Pickthall, where Itani has "seven strong ones". The brackets in Palmer and Pickthall are their own. Also carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about the seven heavens?, with a different reason there.
- 13 78:13 And have appointed a dazzling lamp. This is here because it names a lamp made with them: "a burning lamp" in Sale, Rodwell and Palmer, "a dazzling lamp" in Pickthall and "a blazing lamp" in Itani.
- 14 78:14 And have sent down from the rainy clouds abundant water. This is here because it names the rain sent down: "from the clouds pressing forth rain, water pouring down in abundance" in Sale, "water in abundance from the rain-clouds" in Rodwell, "from the rain-expressing clouds water pouring forth" in Palmer, "from the rainy clouds abundant water" in Pickthall and "from the clouds pouring water" in Itani.
- 15 78:15 Thereby to produce grain and plant. This is here because it says what the rain brings out: "corn, and herbs" in Sale, "corn and herbs" in Rodwell, "the grain and herb" in Palmer, "grain and plant" in Pickthall and "grains and vegetation" in Itani.
- 16 78:16 And gardens of thick foliage. This is here because it adds gardens to what the rain brings out: "gardens planted thick with trees" in Sale, "gardens thick with trees" in Rodwell, "gardens thickly planted" in Palmer, "gardens of thick foliage" in Pickthall and "luxuriant gardens" in Itani.
- 17 78:17 Lo! the Day of Decision is a fixed time. This is here because it turns to the day appointed, and its name differs: "the day of separation" in Sale, "the day of Severance" in Rodwell, "the day of decision" in Palmer, "the Day of Decision" in Pickthall and "The Day of Sorting" in Itani.
- 18 78:18 A day when the trumpet is blown and ye come in multitudes. This is here because it tells of the trumpet on that day and of people coming in companies: "in troops to judgment" in Sale, "in crowds" in Rodwell, "in troops" in Palmer, "in multitudes" in Pickthall and "in droves" in Itani. Also carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about the trumpet blast?, with a different reason there.
- 19 78:19 And the heaven is opened and becometh as gates. This is here because it tells of the heaven opening and what it becomes: "full of gates for the angels to pass through" in Sale, "full of portals" in Rodwell, "all doors" in Palmer, "as gates" in Pickthall and "gateways" in Itani. Sale alone adds "for the angels to pass through".
- 20 78:20 And the hills are set in motion and become as a mirage. This is here because it tells of the mountains moving and what they become: "as a vapour" in Sale, "thin vapour" in Rodwell, "like a mirage" in Palmer, "as a mirage" in Pickthall and "a mirage" in Itani.
- 21 78:21 Lo! hell lurketh in ambush. This is here because it says that hell lies in wait: "a place of ambush" in Sale, "a place of snares" in Rodwell, "an ambuscade" in Palmer, "lurketh in ambush" in Pickthall and "lying in ambush" in Itani. Also carried by the study How does the Qur'an describe hell?, with a different reason there.
- 22 78:22 A home for the rebellious. This is here because it names those for whom it waits: "the transgressors" in Sale, "transgressors" in Rodwell, "the outrageous" in Palmer, "the rebellious" in Pickthall and "the oppressors" in Itani. What hell is to them is "a receptacle" in Sale, "The home" in Rodwell, "a reward" in Palmer, "A home" in Pickthall and "a destination" in Itani. Also carried by the study How does the Qur'an describe hell?, with a different reason there.
- 23 78:23 They will abide therein for ages. This is here because it says how long they stay there: "for ages" in Sale, Palmer and Pickthall, "ages" in Rodwell and "for eons" in Itani. Also carried by the studies How does the Qur'an describe hell? and Does the Qur'an say anyone leaves hell, or is it eternal?, with different reasons there.
- 24 78:24 Therein taste they neither coolness nor (any) drink. This is here because it says that they taste nothing cool there and nothing to drink: "any refreshment" in Sale and "coolness" in Rodwell, Pickthall and Itani, where Palmer has "cool". Pickthall's bracket "(any)" is his own. Also carried by the study How does the Qur'an describe hell?, with a different reason there.
- 25 78:25 Save boiling water and a paralysing cold. This is here because it names what is excepted, and the second thing named differs: "boiling water, and filthy corruption" in Sale, "boiling water and running sores" in Rodwell, "boiling water and pus" in Palmer, "boiling water and a paralysing cold" in Pickthall and "boiling water, and freezing hail" in Itani. This study does not choose between them. Also carried by the study How does the Qur'an describe hell?, with a different reason there.
- 26 78:26 Reward proportioned (to their evil deeds). This is here because it calls this a fitting return: "A fit recompense for their deeds" in Sale, "Meet recompense" in Rodwell, "a fit reward" in Palmer, "Reward proportioned (to their evil deeds)" in Pickthall and "A fitting requital" in Itani. Pickthall's bracket is his own. Also carried by the study How does the Qur'an describe hell?, with a different reason there.
- 27 78:27 For lo! they looked not for a reckoning. This is here because it gives the cause, that they looked for no reckoning: "they hoped that they should not be brought to an account" in Sale, "they looked not forward to their account" in Rodwell, "they did not hope for the account" in Palmer, "they looked not for a reckoning" in Pickthall and "they were not anticipating any reckoning" in Itani. Also carried by the study How does the Qur'an describe hell?, with a different reason there.
- 28 78:28 They called Our revelations false with strong denial. This is here because it says how they treated the signs: "accusing them of falsehood" in Sale, "charging them with falsehood" in Rodwell, "said our signs were lies" in Palmer, "called Our revelations false with strong denial" in Pickthall and "denied Our signs utterly" in Itani. Also carried by the study How does the Qur'an describe hell?, with a different reason there.
- 29 78:29 Everything have We recorded in a Book. This is here because it says that everything is kept on record: "computed, and written down" in Sale, "noted and wrote down all" in Rodwell, "remembered in a book" in Palmer, "recorded in a Book" in Pickthall and "enumerated everything in writing" in Itani. Also carried by the study How does the Qur'an describe hell?, with a different reason there.
- 30 78:30 So taste (of that which ye have earned). No increase do We give you save of torment. This is here because it closes the warning by telling them to taste, with nothing to come but more torment: "We will not add unto you any other than torment" in Sale, "increase of nought but torment" in Rodwell, "we will only increase your torment" in Palmer, "No increase do We give you save of torment" in Pickthall and "We will increase you only in suffering" in Itani. Pickthall's bracket "(of that which ye have earned)" is his own. Also carried by the study How does the Qur'an describe hell?, with a different reason there.
- 31 78:31 Lo! for the duteous is achievement. This is here because it turns to the other end. What awaits is "a place of bliss" in Sale, "a blissful abode" in Rodwell, "a blissful place" in Palmer, "achievement" in Pickthall and "triumph" in Itani, and those it awaits are "the pious" in Sale and Palmer, "the God-fearing" in Rodwell, "the duteous" in Pickthall and "the righteous" in Itani.
- 32 78:32 Gardens enclosed and vineyards. This is here because it names what is given there: "Gardens planted with trees, and vineyards" in Sale, "Enclosed gardens and vineyards" in Rodwell, "gardens and vineyards" in Palmer, "Gardens enclosed and vineyards" in Pickthall and "Gardens and vineyards" in Itani.
- 33 78:33 And voluptuous women of equal age. This is here because it names companions given there, and the renderings word them very differently: "damsels with swelling breasts, of equal age with themselves" in Sale, "damsels with swelling breasts, their peers in age" in Rodwell, "girls with swelling breasts of the same age as themselves" in Palmer, "voluptuous women of equal age" in Pickthall and "splendid spouses, well matched" in Itani. This study does not choose between them.
- 34 78:34 And a full cup. This is here because it names what they drink: "a full cup" in Sale, Rodwell and Pickthall, "a brimming cup" in Palmer and "delicious drinks" in Itani.
- 35 78:35 There hear they never vain discourse, nor lying. This is here because it says that nothing idle or false is heard there: "no vain discourse" in Sale and Rodwell, "no folly and no lie" in Palmer, "never vain discourse, nor lying" in Pickthall and "neither gossip, nor lies" in Itani.
- 36 78:36 Requital from thy Lord - a gift in payment. This is here because it calls all this a gift from the Lord of the addressee: "a gift fully sufficient" in Sale, "sufficing gift" in Rodwell, "a sufficient gift" in Palmer, "a gift in payment" in Pickthall and "a fitting gift" in Itani.
- 37 78:37 Lord of the heavens and the earth, and (all) that is between them, the Beneficent; with Whom none can converse. This is here because it names the Lord as "Lord of the heavens and the earth" in Palmer, Pickthall and Itani and "the Lord of heaven and earth" in Sale, and says that none can address Him: "shall not dare to demand audience of Him" in Sale, "not a word shall they obtain from Him" in Rodwell, "they cannot obtain audience of Him" in Palmer, "with Whom none can converse" in Pickthall and "none can argue with Him" in Itani. The name given Him is "the Merciful" in Sale and Palmer, "the God of Mercy" in Rodwell, "the Beneficent" in Pickthall and "The Most Merciful" in Itani.
- 38 78:38 On the day when the angels and the Spirit stand arrayed, they speak not, saving him whom the Beneficent alloweth and who speaketh right. This is here because it tells of the day when the spirit and the angels stand ranged and none speaks without leave. How they stand is "stand in order" in Sale, "be ranged in order" in Rodwell, "stand in ranks" in Palmer, "stand arrayed" in Pickthall and "stand in row" in Itani. Sale alone names the spirit, as "Gabriel".
- 39 78:39 That is the True Day. So whoso will should seek recourse unto his Lord. This is here because it calls the day true and says that whoever will may turn back to his Lord: "the infallible day" in Sale, "the sure day" in Rodwell, "the true day" in Palmer, "the True Day" in Pickthall and "the Day of Reality" in Itani.
- 40 78:40 Lo! We warn you of a doom at hand, a day whereon a man will look on that which his own hands have sent before, and the disbeliever will cry: "Would that I were dust". This is here because it closes on a warning of what is near and on the cry of the denier. The warning is of "a punishment nigh at hand" in Sale, "a chastisement close at hand" in Rodwell, "a torment that is nigh" in Palmer, "a doom at hand" in Pickthall and "a near punishment" in Itani. The cry is "would to God I were dust" in Sale, "would I were dust" in Rodwell, "Would that I were dust" in Pickthall and "I wish I were dust" in Itani.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Surah an-Naba runs from 78:1 to 78:40. It opens on a question about the tidings over which people differ, and answers that they will come to know. It points to what was made: the earth spread out, the mountains, people in pairs, sleep, night and day, the heavens built above, a lamp, and the rain with what it brings out. It names a day appointed, when the trumpet sounds, the heaven opens and the mountains pass. It sets hell lying in wait for those who went too far against what is given to those who kept their duty, and closes on a warning of what is near, when the denier wishes he were dust.
78:1-30, a section in Tanzil's division of the text. At 78:1-5 the surah asks what people question each other about. The subject is "the great news of the resurrection" in Sale, "the mighty information" in Palmer, "the awful tidings" in Pickthall and "the Great Event" in Itani, and the surah answers, and answers again, that they will come to know. At 78:6-16 it asks about what was made, beginning with the earth as "a bed" in Sale, "a couch" in Rodwell and Palmer, "an expanse" in Pickthall and "a cradle" in Itani, and going on through the mountains, sleep, night and day, the heavens above, a lamp, and rain that brings out grain and gardens. At 78:17-20 it names the day: "the day of separation" in Sale, "the day of Severance" in Rodwell, "the day of decision" in Palmer, "the Day of Decision" in Pickthall and "The Day of Sorting" in Itani. On that day the trumpet sounds and the mountains move. At 78:21-30 hell lies in wait for those who looked for no reckoning and called the signs lies. What they are given besides boiling water is "filthy corruption" in Sale, "running sores" in Rodwell, "pus" in Palmer, "a paralysing cold" in Pickthall and "freezing hail" in Itani. This study does not choose between them.
78:31-40, a section in Tanzil's division of the text. At 78:31-36 the other end is told. What awaits is "a place of bliss" in Sale, "a blissful abode" in Rodwell, "a blissful place" in Palmer, "achievement" in Pickthall and "triumph" in Itani, with gardens, vineyards and a cup, and nothing idle or false is heard there. At 78:37-38 the Lord of all that is above and below is named, none can address Him, and on the day the spirit and the angels stand ranged, none speaks without leave. At 78:39-40 the day is called true, whoever will may turn back to his Lord, and the surah closes on the cry "Would that I were dust" in Pickthall, "would to God I were dust" in Sale and "I wish I were dust" in Itani.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer about meaning, and which source would be needed. It does not say what the tidings disputed at its opening are, or what the spirit that stands with the angels is, in the sense the words carry in Arabic: that would need a commentary (), a layer this platform does not hold or show.
What this rests on
Opens with 78:1, widening across 40 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 40 passages, each with every cleared translation
40 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. - Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

That is the True Day. So whoso will should seek recourse unto his Lord
That is the true day; and whoso pleases let him take to a resort unto his Lord

78:40 — the verse above
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it6 of the 7 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across five English translations - the four public-domain renderings of Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880 and Pickthall 1930, and Itani 2012 - of 78:1-40, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography: they are layers this platform does not hold or show.
How this set was arrived at. This is a study of one surah, so it carries every verse of it: every verse of Surah an-Naba, from 78:1 to 78:40, each as its own passage with its own reason. No verse of the surah is left out, so none is recorded as not carried.
How the reading is divided. After a short reading of the whole surah, the reading takes the surah section by section. The sections are Tanzil's division of the text, from the Tanzil Project's Quran metadata; this study does not divide the surah itself, and each section is named by its verse range.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
What this study does not answer about occasion, and which source would be needed. It does not say who it is that asks about the tidings, or on what occasion any verse here was given: that would need an source (accounts of the occasions of revelation), a layer this platform does not hold or show. It offers no academic-historical reading either: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
